Default Why do people eat more than they need to?

Why do people eat more food then physically and mentally needed?

    Give me your opinions.

I believe that eating food can be pleasurable, but it puzzles me why our bodies let us eat more then we need too.

I believe it to be a primal instinct that we are yet to rid ourselves off.. There haven't always been food in plenties like there is today (at least in some parts of the world). So back in time you had to eat when the possibility arose and the more the better.

That and the fact that food can taste pretty damn good :D
Also you have to do something with your hands while watching anime, and stuffing food down the throat seems like a valid solution

The average stomach capacity of a human being (this being just before the literal bursting point) is 4 liters. That's two 2 liter coke bottles, if you can imagine that. Granted, it's only the average, some people having smaller or larger capacities than others, but that's one reason why we can cram ourselves full to the point of feeling sick.

Then, there are also genetic problems (for example, Prader-Willi syndrome, in which the afflicted person never feels full, so they constantly eat). Also to be blamed on genetics is the propensity that some people tend to have towards gaining weight or eating more.

And of course, gluttony and overindulgence in food. It's delicious, but sometimes, people fail to think of quality over quantity. After all, if you really enjoy something, it would probably be even better to eat it in small amounts and be able to eat it more times than to just cram it all down in one sitting.

there's also a system that regulates when you actually feel full. I believe that its dependent not on the amount of food... but the time it takes you to eat it. (I think thats how it goes... I'm to lazy too look it up and this is all coming from my odd memory). So if you scarf something down... you'll feel less full .... while if you took your sweet sweet time to eat it ... you'll "feel" more full.

But you know sometimes you can't but just help going OM NOM NOM when you're starving LOL.

Humans are greedy in nature. Even if the food is not needed, it's just our minds telling us that we're hungry. When in fact, we don't. I think it happens when we saw someone eating a delicious-looking food

I think it's because people don't know how to eat. It's not just about diet, but about when and what you're doing while you're eating. Eating + watching TV = terrible idea. Skipping breakfast makes you eat more later in the day. Plus a lot of people think bigger is better, so they go for larger portions when they really shouldn't.

Eating is the process of ingesting food to provide for an animal's nutritional needs, particularly for energy and growth. All animals must eat organisms in order to survive: carnivores eat other animals, herbivores eat plants, and omnivores consume a mixture of both.

Physiologically, eating is generally triggered by hunger, but there are numerous physical and psychological conditions that can affect appetite and disrupt normal eating patterns.

Well, because I am hungry, of course :^d

It really doesn't help when my mom and brother start watching shows on TV like Man vs. Food. It makes me hungry every time I see the stuff on there, and it annoys me, but they don't care. They just say "So, don't watch it". They don't understand. The damage has already been done at that point. As soon as I see a juicy 7 pound burrito, I'm going to probably want one (though smaller. 7 pounds is overkill.)

You bring up a valid point. So if tv just showed terrible food then we would have no problems. Tell them to watch dirty jobs.

So eating is pleasurable and can be induced by temptation. Wow food is powerful O.O

To eat is to satisfy your needs.. If you are full, and you still want to eat, it's not hungerness anymore, it's greediness.. hahaha.

But sometimes, eating is a fun thing to do.. It taste really good!! :D

    Nutritionist here!
Simple, Eating disorders are developed by stress, depression and the likes. People eat more to escape this certain emotions. Countering bad feelings with good ones. There are certain types of eating disorders and lots related psychologically. Other than that factors would also include adolescence, pregnancy, fast metabolism and patients who just undergo surgery.

One thing to put into account is that sometimes its your brain. There is a certain part of your brain called the "hypothalamus" and one of its main controls is hunger. If your body is not getting the certain nutrients it needs, your hypothalamus will trigger your urge to eat. I had to write a paper over this stuff in college.
