Default Cooking - Do You, or Do You Not?

In a lot of cases in anime, the main characters are either amazing cooks, or they can't even boil water to save their lives. There's not a lot of examples I can think of where the characters wouldn't fall into one of those two camps.

Speaking for myself, I only started getting into cooking in the last year, and I only really do it to make dishes that I can't buy or find anywhere locally. It's been an awesome way for me to try a number of Japanese, Chinese, Indian, German, and African dishes that I might not otherwise get a chance to eat for the rest of my life.

What about you? What's the extent of cooking (not limited to Japanese) that you do? Are you the kind of person who can assemble a multi-layer okonomiyaki with ease, or is ramen your idea of a fantastic meal? Is your perspective on cooking one of creativity, or would you rather avoid cooking altogether to save time?

Good thread. I, too, started cooking recently. It's not cooking from scratch as I still buy pre-prepared frozen chicken, potatoes, etc. But it's still a major improvement from eating out at a restaurant for lunch and dinner every day. And it's cheaper. :p

I can cook! I started learning early and now can cook with or without a recipe. Though I don't know the crazy knife skills some anime characters got.

I . . . don't cook. I can cook, however, with or without a recipe. There's something about the whole process that I just think is incredibly boring so I prefer to have others do it for me.

On the other hand, I enjoy plating food. Setting the table properly and plating what has been prepared is usually my contribution when it comes to meals. I like for everything to be pretty and (in my opinion) organized ^_^

I have the ability to cook with any recipe as long as i have the ingredients (Honestly its really just like I am good at following the directions) But when it comes to just out right cooking no recipe at all It comes down to Fried rice, any breakfast type food, noodles, and fried chicken. Its also worth mentioning that I'm sure if I had to cook for myself all time I would be a lot better at it but since my fiancé doesn't want me in the kitchen unless i'm cooking any of the above mentioned foods don't really get much practice on it like I used too. lol

I love to cook. My mom taught me and I still have a handful of her and my grandmothers recipes. My kids are fans of my cooking thank goodness. I'm not the greatest recipe follower though. I tend to deviate a lot. Which is both awesome and not awesome. Awesome in I've made some super yummy stuff at by tweaking some recipes. Not awesome in that I can't always duplicate what I threw together.

There are different aspects to cooking as there is also a baking side. I grew up watching my gran cook and bake all the time and in amount to feed and army but just from watching her I developed a passion and a love for cooking. When I was 13 my parents decided that everyone in the house has a turn to cook and my last three years at school I did hospitality so I can cook and bake just about anything

I can't cook and don't but when I do cook, ..it doesn't taste very good. I do eat my cooking, but somehow I feel like I'm on a survival course anytime I cook. x.x

I cook. Started in high school - primarily making breakfast foods. I started with bacon and eggs, then to omelets, then making my own recipe called the "GC Ome-latte" (named by gaherishade), and now I just cook whatever whenever. I don't eat very much, so yeah, it's a "whenever".

I really love the idea of it, but I'm not that good with slicing things (cooking hates me!!). I always end up cutting/ hurting my hand.. then it bleeds. And as far as bleeding goes, Fainting follows.. HAHAHA!
My mom always let me watch her cook though.

I don't always cook my own food. But when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

My parents made sure that I started learning how to cook when I was ten, so I have had eleven years of practice. I do mostly Westernized version of food, but that does not stop me from trying to make something more authentic. I am not like a chef who has those awesome knife skills, but I can definitely cook with or without a recipe, and I am currently working on more advanced baking recipes. :D
