In a lot of cases in anime, the main characters are either amazing cooks, or they can't even boil water to save their lives. There's not a lot of examples I can think of where the characters wouldn't fall into one of those two camps.
Speaking for myself, I only started getting into cooking in the last year, and I only really do it to make dishes that I can't buy or find anywhere locally. It's been an awesome way for me to try a number of Japanese, Chinese, Indian, German, and African dishes that I might not otherwise get a chance to eat for the rest of my life.
What about you? What's the extent of cooking (not limited to Japanese) that you do? Are you the kind of person who can assemble a multi-layer okonomiyaki with ease, or is ramen your idea of a fantastic meal? Is your perspective on cooking one of creativity, or would you rather avoid cooking altogether to save time?
