    Default Ideas for improvement

    OS WANTS YOU!

Well, no, not exactly you per se but rather, your input! Fresh ideas and suggestions. That's what we're looking for. This is all to improve our beloved site and keep her running afterall. This is what this thread's all about. Besides, fifty, maybe hundreds of head are better than just a handful when it comes to making of something great, right? Sure, famous scientists discover great things alone or with just a handful of individuals but that's not the point I'm making. Now then, before you guys say anything, please keep in mind that all the ideas/suggestions should be within the rules. That means a proposition to add lewd stuff as a means to attract new members is a no go... though, I'd be honestly delighted to have that~

Our main goal for this is simple. To increase activity and urge members to contribute to the site as well as to draw in newcomers. As a member, what do you think is missing? What does this place lack and what other concerns do you have? Let's hear em out.

Anyway, the spoiler below contains a list of what people usually suggests, some/most of which are already implemented. Please read them first. It'd save you the trouble of posting something similar!

Spoiler for Snagged from Cloverleaf's thread

Also, keep in mind that we value every suggestion made so please do not think badly of us if your suggestion was not implemented or taken into consideration. As I've said, we'd like to hear what you guys have to say but that doesn't mean we'll implement everything you post. With that out of the way, this thread is now open!

I forgot to mention, this thread will be closed down after two weeks to check each and every suggestion so stay tuned~

Members are mostly enthusiasts of animations and related anime stuff. It would be great if there are available venues to nurture that interest into something more productive like doing animations, video editing, sound scoring, story creation, character development, character design, etc. Goal would be to enable participants create their own anime. It's something to be proud of when we say it's our passion we learned it from the OS community.

This has been suggested countless times already, but I really think we should pursue the development of mobile interface for mobile viewing. It's not like we should have an app, but rather the interface should be compatible with mobile devices. Even mangafox and myanimelist have innovated their site for mobile viewing even without really downloading their app, if ever their app exist.

With people now streaming and mostly doing stuff with their mobile devices, I think OS should improve along with technology too. If OS remains as is with the technology rapidly changing, I don't think it will attract more people in the near future.

This is not an easy task, especially when our admin is only one; the only one who really develops the structure of the site. If there are kindhearted OS members with skills and who are willing to help in the development of the mobile interface compatibility then it would be great. If the admin shoulders it alone, then it's also fine but it would be difficult for him because the site needs to be constantly monitored too, if ever problems occur.

I'll suggest more if I ever think one, but as of now this is the only one I can think of that really needs attention.

NOTE: What I mean is it's not really necessary to make an app besides there are lots of things to consider about making one, but rather make the site more responsive to any device, as what Kaiser said. I just forgot the term 'responsive'.

I also like the suggestions in this thread, linkie.

    Other suggestions:
    • Completed watched anime (manual). Watchlog records the ones you've watch, completed or not, so watchlog is not applicable. I honestly use favorites to record the ones I completed so the "favorite" function loses its purpose. OS is not MAL? Oh come on! The functionality convenience is what we're talking about and not the comparison. Teehee~ X9
    • Be more strict with rule number 2: Uploader's Rules and Discussion Thread. Being an uploader may be voluntary but being loose on the rules is not good. Old members might be considerate with this but most new members aren't. Potential newcomers will be dissatisfied with this kind of system. Why would I wait when I can watch it in another site with more up-to-date uploading of videos? If you think of what others might think.
    • This one is still a mystery so we should clarify the Otaku Lvl. How do you achieve a certain level? And it's time to create a medal for it. LOL.
    • What's the purpose for OS Radio? I know, for listening, duh! But... do members use it regularly? And the Request List is there but there is no function.
    • Want something like member magnets? Hmm... flashy Weekly Popular Anime slide in the home page?
    • Separate anime and drama in the surprise me button. XD
    • Facebook page plugin. Teehee-pero~
    • Sort anime list by or sort search results by. Sort search results by Date Started, Date Finished, Latest Update (Existing), Rating, and Views. Date started and finished can be simply just date also. And sort all anime by popularity (needs formula or something), or a page of some sort.

Title | Ratings | Views | Latest Update | Date Started | Date Finieshed

    • I noticed gilbertalva keeps posting his youtube videos on the gaming talk section. If members will imitate him then the gaming talk section will be full of youtube videos promotion. Why not create a sub-section for promoting your own youtube videos. Post count is debatable.
    • Events in streaming? Let's bring it up the next level! XD
    • Question of the day/week. If someone can answer there will be a reward. LOL.
    • Make Chatroom more noticeable. Chatroom is in the fixed private chat bar below the page. It's not noticeable and I doubt people use it frequently. I don't know how it function because I don't really use it. XD If it were made more public and every member can create chat rooms and invite anyone even if they're not friends then it would be great. That way, they can discuss anything they want because it's a private chat area of individuals who shares the same ideas and wanted to discuss those ideas.
    • Secret pages. LOL. Let's discover new areas of OS. LOL. XD
    • Fix this page. Bring back the stats panel in the home page. Then add top forum posters of the week and top active members (depends on the activeness, forum posting, and streaming). Members will be more encouraged to see their names listed. Anyone who can defend their names in a month will have a medal.
    • Bring the Last Blog Entry on the home page. It goes unnoticed because the updates are posted on the bottom most part of the forum section list. It will encourage members to create blogs.
    • I'll think some more.
    • Lastly, let's fix all the bugs first. Improving a site where there are still noticeable bugs is a no no. Even the minor details. Teehee~

There's tons of ideas for improvement, we even have our own sub-forum for that. Besides, what's the point if we bring ideas? It's probably not going to be implemented anyways.

Lemme guess, you posted a quick reply after reading the thread's title? Since you'd more or less know the answer to your own question if you've read what I've posted.

More vertical display space for signatures in forums. Right now your signature can be displayed up to a height of 190 pixels, while the rest is omitted if it's bigger than that. That’s a measly size for an anime website to have, and the limit is kind of pointless, because it only prevents page stretching. I can have an absurdly huge image down there and it will still load ALL of it. What I suggest is, we either increase the sig display height to 400 pixels, or completely take out the limit and give forum mods one more task, (since they’re not really doing anything…) which will be to remove any signatures spotted/reported exceeding a 400 pixels height restriction.

How increasing signature space will help improve OS? I dunno. I just know it’s been frustrating to make signatures for myself and others with so little space to work on. And it will be for others too if you’re ever going to hold Signature Of The Month events. And speaking of SOTM events, those are pretty popular in most anime websites I’ve been, so there you have an attraction.

I skimmed it, actually. This thread is about "Fresh ideas and suggestions. That's what we're looking for.", right? That still makes my question valid, unless you're talking about ideas for community events etc, and not a general improvement on the site itself?

ShoutBox Archive feature as a tool for Moderators so as to not rely on screenshots which are easily manipulated. The feature doesn't have to save everything. Just the past couple of hours or so.

Not that this has been a problem (lately), but it could come in handy for you guys.

That's all I got for now.

I run & monitor several different companies as I am a marketing specialist & a developer/designer of websites. For one company, I have noticed that out of every 100 customer leads I receive, 48 of them are coming from mobile devices. So it is very important for this site to become responsive because incompatibility will marginalize your visitor reach as time passes.

As xuei suggested, the website needs mobility to target more devices - which ultimately means more audiences. But limiting the development to a mobile interface is not really the best execution.

The type that OS needs is fluid development - where certain classes & IDs of CSS are converted into percentages instead of fixed widths & can control the size & positions of each class & ID using media queries. This requires no hacks like most responsive methods do. The end result is a website that can run on any device, browser, & resolution for universal compatibility - which goes far beyond the minimal requirement of a mobile device. This is vital to OS's growth.

As for a user convenience suggestion, I would personally like to see an OS Development forum section dedicated to 3rd party development concepts engineered by the community that any staff developer can reference (not to be mistaken for suggestions - but more of a team project for 3rd party activities. An example of what I mean is XBMC/Kodi operating systems - in which someone with Python experience can convert OS (including login authentication) into a plugin for home theater users.

The most important thing a website needs to do when people have so many device & browser options is become as fluid as possible & open a development section to relieve the administrator wherever possible.

I dont Know what to say but If It were something I would I you wanted you should make an OS mobile app something convinient for those which that use mobiles more than PCs, also you could use with a new picture editing Interphase so that people can adjust better the Images they use or they post.

Welp, I suppose it's true I wasn't being specific about what kind of improvement I'm talking about. Lemme just edit that out aaaand... voila! I've edited the first post. kudos for reminding me that~

As for your question, that is exactly the point. To collect ideas and see if it could work or not. Now since you've mentioned that there are tons of ideas for improvement, might you perhaps address to some and tell us something we might have overlooked? Assuming that there's a lot, some may be implemented, you'll never know the outcome until you try it afterall. No harm in trying too.

Maybe you could place the chatbox in a more conspicuous place - like the top of the Home page or the top of the Forums page? I didn't even notice its existence until recently, it's buried in the Community menu. I'm sure it would be a "deadbox" less often if people could see it easily on a front page.

    Cool

I have a couple of suggestions:
    - Os should really get an app. I'm usually on my tab but at night I am on my desktop lol. Anyways, I have notice a lot of members watch on their mobiles and I guess it would be more convenient for them.
-In connection to what I said earlier, are there issues when streaming on mobile? I see a lot say that it is error not found ot gateway thingy error. Though I may not experience it, but let's face it with the fast pace of technology not all of us watch OS in our computers anymore. Let us make OS more watchable in moble (app! Hehehe)
    - I wanna promote chatbox! Because I am always talking and doing role play with system message (I just wanna add more fun to chatbox and I always miss members that go there) can you like have a botton that members can see chatbox right away? I know the fanatic chatter medal can be a motivation but it's always dead so I wait randomly for someone to go there and talk. Lol I feel like the guardian of CB. But please help me resurrect CB! CB is fun when there are people who makes it alive
    - can you make the OS list more up-to date? One member in sb can't find an anime in the list but saw it jn recent updates but let's admit recent updates will bury that after more updates. And since I like to help (also bored or while streaming) I look it up for them and give them link.
-still related to streaming, when members search they may only know English or Japanese title, I suggest when they search the system can detect alternate title for them to make it more user friendly.
-I know we have a request thread but I notice that not all requests are rendered too. I know cause sometimes I go there and try to give members links or updates with the anime they requested but some don't get an answer or title not added. I think this should be ore functionally. So that they will not rot waiting if someone would go ahead an add title and upload it for them. I know the feels!!!
    - I agree with xuei0000 about the uploader's rules. We should have the ongoing animes updated on time so that they will not go to other sites to watch it. Some anime titles are no longer updated.

That's all I have in my mind for now. Please notice this, Qualtz-senpai

What's the use of OS-tan now? It's not even functioning anymore. Can't we remove it and replace it with the Chat *whateverfollows* instead? Like Chat Tab, then under it is Chatbox and Chatroom.

Anyways, I don't know if people knew about this, but you can actually stream and chat in shoutbox and chatbox at the same time in the same page. Open your *whateverthatbariscalled* found below your page, the one with the dialog balloon image. Click Mini-chatbox and there you go! You can chat in shoutbox and chatbox on the same page while streaming at the same time.

The problem is that, people don't know how to navigate around the website. Why not make a thread like
"Tour Around OS", or make it in video form to be more interesting. ^^ Place the thread or video link on the front page (top part to be more noticeable). Anyone, even non-members, can access it so they will be encourage to register in OS if they see the content. LOL. XD It's like a promotion thread/video. X9

This is something, that I really agree with. People are surprised when they hear about the chatbox because it's sø hidden. The shoutbox is there when you stream and on the frontpage while chatbox is hidden in the community tab.

This might be minor & trivial. How about listing next to an anime episode if it is subbed or dubbed? I noticed that very few uploads here on OS are dubs especially older shows. I think it helps just to indicate shows that are dubbed so as to avoid being disappointed.

this is just my idea to make the site running... i know that many will not like this idea(even me) but i think it's something that the site needs...

LET'S ADD ADS IN THE SITE...

ok, here's my reason... i noticed that the donation's monthly goals was never reached for the passed 4-5 months (and yes, i did not donate even a single cent)... so, i am a little bit worried if these will keep going for more than a couple of month...
but that doesn't mean adding ads the same as the other anime site... maybe a couple of 1-3 ads that is not very flashy or heavy animated(for slow pc laptop user) and must be anime/manga/japan related... and of course free from virus...

    1. Completely remade search engine, with all possible tags and combinations. Even OSCA winners?
    2. Direct link from anime to anime reviews so that there is any reason to actually write one, and the title could seriously get it's own sub-forum so that the reviews won't become this gigantic thread what no one reads.
    3. Possibly similar direct link to anime discussion, which could also be for every episode? This would require the uploader to create episode threads while at it.
3.1 Like / Dislike poll for each episode discussion.

This site is forum, so let's leverage that a bit. ^^

Green Man Gaming has Steam discounts, which stack with the Steam sales.

Yahallo! I thought it would be okay if I post my suggestions here so everyone can see. :D So here it goes:

    1. Have more distinguished colors for the donators such as follows:

    Supporter for $1-50
    Patron for $51-150
    Benefactor for $151-300
    Good Samaritan for $301-500
    Hero for $501-750
    Savior for $751-1050
    Sponsor for $1,051-1,400
Legendary Donator for $1,401- and above

As stated in this thread made by Augustus, this may encourage more members to donate to our site. I just added the color schemes that I have in mind. :)

    2. To encourage uploaders further, why not add more shades of yellow for them just like the donators and the citizen colors? See my samples below:

    Novice Uploader for 12 - 50 upload
    Regular Uploader for 51 - 150 uploads
    Master Uploader for 151 - 500 uploads
    Ultimate Uploader for 501 - 750 uploads
    Supreme Uploader for 751 - 1,500 uploads
Heavenly Uploader for 1,501 and above uploads

Enforcing the rules specifically for the uploaders is great but then again, we all have to keep in mind that uploaders are encoding and uploading videos voluntarily just like the donators. They also deal with members who nag at them thru PM. I figured it would be great for all uploaders to have these colors along side the medals as motivation as well. ^^"

    3. Have the citizen colors (Regular, Citizen and Veteran) as bronze, silver and gold. I suggested this before to Kobbeh, thinking that it would be cooler to have these three citizenship like below:

    OS Regular to OS Regular
    OS Citizen to OS Citizen
    OS Veteran to OS Veteran

This is not really a major change at all but the colors the current usergroups have might come in handy in the future. ;) Oh and also, have the requirements for OS Regular be changed from 30 posts to 100 posts.

    4. Have the comment box for every series be removed and changed to a link of the series' thread in the forums. We offer a lot of venues for discussion to the point that I believe (my opinion only please) it caused divided attention among all members. If we can have at least one thread per series or a section for a series provided with threads for each episode, it would be a great if we can collide all discussions in one platform, the forum, for members. Then if they want to take the discussion into one on one level, they can talk through VMs. Hehe. :D

    5. Hide all participation medals in user's profile. Medals have been a great reward for members who join events to keep the community lively. However, it's value decreased drastically as participation medals are given to all those who submit their entries. It's not a bad thing but if we can have these medals visible only in the profile of each member, like a scrapbook of some sort, then perhaps the medals' value will rise again and people will join not only for the sake of having one medal but to win. ^^

Oh, I forgot about this one:

    6. Have the background (Miku) of OS changed at least once a month using our own member's graphic creations or edits. This will showcase our members' creativity plus they get to share their awesome creations or edits of existing art in OS. They can just add, Edited by: [Username] if the edited an existing anime photo and interpreted it on their own or Created by: [Username] if they made the image from the scratch. Please see the one made by ChumChumee as an example of edits posted in this thread:

    Spoiler :

Whew! I guess that's pretty much it. All others have been suggested by other members. Thanks for reading!! :D

    1. Have more distinguished colors for the donators such as follows:

    OS Donator for $1-50
    OS VIP 1 for $51-150
    OS VIP 2 for $151-300
    OS VIP 3 for $301-500
    OS VIP 4 for $501-750
    OS VIP 5 for $751-1050
    OS Sponsor for $1,051-1,400
OS Board of Director for $1,401- and above

As stated in this thread made by Augustus, this may encourage more members to donate to our site. I just added the color schemes that I have in mind. :)

    2. To encourage uploaders further, why not add more shades of yellow for them just like the donators and the citizen colors? See my samples below:

    Apprentice Uploader for 12 - 50 upload
    Regular Uploader for 51 - 150 uploads
    Master Uploader for 151 - 500 uploads
    Ultimate Uploader for 501 - 750 uploads
    Supreme Uploader for 751 - 1,500 uploads

I think it's a great idea to do this, however I'm concerned that it will be hard to distinguish veteran and uploader status aswell as OS Yuri color and OS Citizen color. I have a really hard time distinguishing at least.
