Default Call your parents by their names?

A friend of mine mentioned that he calls his mother and father by their names. I found that interesting, and I asked him why. Apparently he feels that he's being respectful by doing so. I understand why, and I also think it is a sign of respect, but I prefer to keep calling my parents by "mother" and "father".

I guess its a matter of preferences. My parents, however, would flip if I call them just by their names. They find it disrespectful.
I address them as "Mama" or "Papa". Or that with their names after Mama or papa.

Same as Jeiru. My parents will flip out and be upset if ever I try calling them by their first names.

I've never called my parents by their names and just use Mom and Dad instead, and I think it would feel kind of weird to actually call them by their names. I guess it would be sort of talking to someone I know less if I called them by their names.

Hmm .. I remember I use to adress my mother by her name if I was in trouble as a kid, as a sign of respect rather than saying "Yes mom, I understand" Felt like I was answering a sergent in the army as it sounded cold compared to a warm mom word.

Well, I think my parents would be sad if I started calling them by their names. I call them Far and Mor which is danish for Dad and Mom.

Well from my country, if you call your parents by their names, you'd get a SLAP on your face. Hahaha *kidding* but yeah, I usually call them "Papa", "Mama" or most of the times "Mom, Dad".

Mama, and Papa. In our family it is considered as more respectful than name-calling because it shows a sign of authority to the person being called.
The term archaic time machine brings about the concept of reversal.

same ! i called my parents "Ma and Pa"/ Mama and Papa.
I'm not proud calling their names, it sounds harsh/uncomfortable approach.

I don't understand how referring to one's parents by their name shows any respect. By doing so, you're basically pulling them down to your level, and not acknowledging them as elders.

I call my mom Mama, but that's because of Johnny Bravo back in the day and it stuck ever since. However, my mom married my step dad who I call by name.
    Call my father dad.

I guess that's weird, but I did once call my mom by her name and it felt weird. It's like when you call your teacher mom by mistake and feel super awkward.

I call them Mama/Daddy. It never crossed my mind about calling them by their names. It not only shows respect but that special connection between a parent and a child.

My kids call me mom and my better half dad. And yes I will be mad if they start addressing us by our names. Mom and Dad were the first 2 words I taught them when they were still little.

Never ever. I have a hard time calling my wife's parents by their names. I love that I have a daughter now so I can just call them Nana and papa. I think it is more respectful to call people by their titles than their names. I even call my uncles and aunts uncle so and so or aunt Yada Yada.
