Default Fooly Cooly [Review] Warning: Spoilers

    Hello all

Fooly Cooly is one of my all-time favorite animus that I've ever watched, and I thought I might make a review. I really enjoyed the artwork and animation that went into the making of FLCL. Although it is an old anime, and the animation is a little dated, i can get passed that because it fits the characters and the plot. This particular anime also includes romance and mecha aspects.

Fooly Cooly is basically the representation of the steps in the entering of puberty. We see Takkun (Naota) experience new actions and feeling he's never felt before. His friend Mimi puts her frustrations on him because her boyfriend (Naota's brother) is gone. He soon meets Haruko, and she turns his whole world upside down. She hits him in the head with a powerful bass guitar, which then makes Medical Mechanical Robots come out of his forehead. Naota's life will never be the same from then-on.

Each robot that comes out of Naota's head is a representation of the next stage in puberty that he goes through. The first (Kanti) is the beginning stage in puberty: Zits. Naota tries to hide this "zit" by using a band-aid which does the trick for a while. However, the ban-aid won't hold for long. It then, soon, pops and Kanti flies out with a white robot-arm attacking Kanti.

The second stage was the rise in fear, understanding, curiosity, and release of certain smells. This is where Naota is having trouble understanding Mimi's situation and really wants to help, but what he doesn't realize is that he can't help Mimi. In result, he causes more trouble than needed. Also a larger robot appears and tries to kill everyone.

the third stage is when he goes through physical change and care for his physical appearance. This is where Naota gets cat ears and is quite embarrassed of them. Because of this he doesn't want to enter the school play (his role is, ironically, a cat). So-on and so-forth. He ends up transferring his cat ears to his friend's head, out of which exits a giant spider-like robot, which is defeated with curry.

The fourth is where Naota begins to "notice" Haruka more, and he starts to feel sexual tendencies to come. Not only this, but his anger and jealousy also rises. No robot comes, but he does get a new bass guitar pulled from his head.

The fifth stage is when Naota loses his inhibitions, and becomes more "bold". Because of this, he becomes confused of what he really wants in life and distances himself from all his friends, except Haruka. Again, no robot from his head, but his friend Mimi befriends a dog-like robot, which eats anything. The dog-robot then becomes too big, and Naota must defeat it.

The sixth stage is where Naota reaches his final obstacle, in which he becomes less caring and more adventurous. He leaves school and his home to live on the road with Haruka. Little did he know that Haruka would be his opponent in the last battle. This is also where Naota must say goodbye to Haruka. This is the most important step because Naota realizes what he truly wants in life, and understands what he didn't understand before. Also, before the battle with Haruka, Haruka and Naota defeated a giant gun-shooting robot (shaped like a hand). Important: Naota absorbs the power that Aimus (Haruka's true love) and uses it to fight Haruka. In the end Animus escapes and Haruka must leave to find him again.

Thank you for reading, and if you want to put your own personal review, please do so X) here.

One of the best anime i ever seen, for sure!

Your evaluation of the series as puberty of Naota is quite accurate, as my understanding of this piece.
There are a few scenes that this theme overtly rises.

I admit i didn't knew beforehand that some argue we have those "steps into puberty", in a quick search i found out that some pediatricians indeed classify five different steps, not six. but they're not quite that simple. Of course there i can be wrong or not looked too deeply into it.

Very nice analysis anyway! Thank you for posting.

For those who enjoyed FLCL, I advise you to have a look at Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's work, and Evangelion in particular. (I'm sure you'll recognize the chara-design ^^)

    I agree on most parts.

I really enjoyed FLCL. Being someone who was once a sexually confused and in all honestly scared teenage boy, the show really stuck with me. The adolescent stage was rough, and is rough for most people. You realize you have very little control over your own body. You start to change, physically and mentally. It's a time when you are transitioning into adult life.

The hardest part for me as a puberty-stricken kid was the realization that my heroes weren't perfect. The relationship with, and the way Naota looked at his brother was something I personally could relate with.

Meh. I could go on forever about this anime.
If I could say one thing about, it would be to watch it. The animation was fantastic, the characters were unique, and the plot is interesting and deep enough to keep you thinking.

I agree. I remember watching Fooly Cooly on Cartoon Network during my younger days. The animation is beautiful even for an older anime. I would also recommend others to watch this anime.

This was one of the Animes that I watched when I was early off into the habit. Was a complete eye opener to the world of sporadic action and an off the wall storyline. As it turns out it was surprisingly, both entertaining and heart wrenching at certain turns. Definitely a must watch for any avid Anime fan.
