I'd like to put some input in here. With SOPA and PIPA encountering heavy resistance in the US it's time to focus on the global threat, ACTA. You can learn more about it on Wikipedia.

It's a treaty drafted in relative secrecy that goes steps beyond SOPA/PIPA even allowing governments to monitor our private communications. It's currently in negotiation between Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States, and has been officially signed by United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea.

For US citizens there is a petition you can sign here: https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petition...ernet/MwfSVNBK.

I really think that this about sums up everything I stand for and I'll be taking part in this particular task.

I'd like to see just how they react when they've got a massive hole in the start of their profit report.

Oh why is it that I don't hear this in the main stream media? I just heared that Anonymous attacked the Polish Goverment cuz they are planning to sign the ACTA in Tokyo. I mean Anonymous blacked out all the gov sites and they still decided to sign the ACTA!.......

    That does not look good...

Does anyone perhaps know if there is a decision between the EU?

Even if PIPA/SOPA are delayed, seems the FBI have more powers and don't need to even wait for an act to be passed to take action. What does this tell us?

government is by the people and for the people

Yeah! The wonderful and culturally saturated lessons we learned from prohibition lead to the War on Drugs--which has been almost completely ineffective, extraordinarily expensive, discriminatory, and socially regressive! Thank the lord we learned not to criminalize substances whose uses are more or less inevitable, forcing the business underground where it cannot be regulated, thus dramatically increasing the likelihood of systematic crime and violence!

I'm sure we'll learn our lesson with SOPA! Today, it's the enforcement of copyright! Tomorrow, maybe it's "hostile speech," then the next day "undesirable speech"! Soon we could have a War on Communication, effectively banning the entire internet (except where experts deem its use to be necessary, under highly controlled conditions, of course). But hey, we would have learned our lesson with SOPA and PIPA, and we'd have overturned them! Foreign piracy sites for everyone!

Prohibition was a horrible idea, as is SOPA. And yeah, more people consumed alcohol during prohibition, as will more people get around SOPA if it passes than do now (if that makes sense).

I don't really want it to pass because I think it's a lousy bill, but something like it will probably pass eventually thanks to law makers who don't understand the unintended consequences of what they are doing.

My point was more that the internet is still a baby just starting to learn to crawl within our very old running human society. We don't really know yet how to work with each other.

These acts by the government don't really guarantee an end to Piracy. Piracy is at an age where its almost impossible to Stop , Even if they keep taking down sites, Piracy cannot be erased , and we should not back down to the government.
We should protest and also I think Obama will loose pretty surely by the end of this year n taking down pirated material from the net might even lessen the sales , who knows it might have more of a reverse effect and cut down sales ,Also if ACTA like acts are passed in the future , Since Japan agrees to it to and so do other developed nation , Anime's future seems bleak over the net , Just gotta but stuff then .
But the chances for that happening are low as for now , but who knows , maybe someday we just have to stick with torrents and complete P2P software that are only user based , seems like we're going in the opposite direction with internet , instead of developing more .... its being censored .

With SOPA & PIPA pretty much out of the picture, the main focus is now aimed at ACTA.

The EU has been debating the issue for months now and a new version of the ACTA can be found here (Lots of text, so I'll do a TL;DR version soon™) But the basic facts of it are that your entire online experience will be monitored, all of it, every email, every web page, every game will be monitored by your ISP, ACTA gives your ISP and the IP holders (for instance Time Warner) the ability to gain the required evidence and then SET the appropriate penalty, be it time in prison, fines and payments for using the IP ... the courts/judges will NOT set this, Time Warner WILL!

Luckily, a very few determined European Parliament members have seen this for what it is and are starting to stand against ACTA, they have asked for more transparency and they have stated the attack on peoples rights is too much (more on this can be read here). ACTA will be put to the vote again soon, however many of the EU countries, the UK included have already signed the initial agreement.

If all this makes you worry for the future, especially with the laws currently in place are, I feel doing more than an adequate job of stemming piracy, fear not! At a recent Hackers Conference, there has been talk of setting up a second internet, away from this current one and all it will cost is around £100 for the receiver ... that's it, however this project is still in it's fundamental stages, so completion is in the (fairly) distant future.

I for one will be moving over as soon as it becomes reality, I have been using the internet since '97 and have seen the growth and changes along the way, this isn't the internet I remember or one I hoped for, it's owned by the companies not the individuals now. I agree piracy is out of control and the courts are losing the battle however, your individual human rights will be torn down until it can be controlled! And that means martial law for the internet!

Karel De Gucht, the EU trade commissioner, said that taking the treaty to the European court of justice would clear the “fog of misinformation” surrounding Acta, as well as assessing the compatibility of the treaty with standing EU rights and freedom.

“This debate must be based upon facts and not upon the misinformation or rumour that has dominated social media sites and blogs in recent weeks,” De Gucht said. “Acta will not censor websites or shut them down; Acta will not hinder freedom of the internet or freedom of speech.”
The EU are "assuming" that ACTA will not harm our freedom... so they put ACTA to a debate to clear the "misinformation"... this is a "little" sign that EU are going to continue the ACTA

what I feared is our fredom to stream, upload and download will be stripped from us... to think that some government tried to control and monitor the internet it's totally ridiculous... it's the same as my country before the government reformation on 1990's... we are stripped from our right to receive information, television banned from airing critical news about the government, newspaper information are filtered from what information can be printed or not, radio are the same....

I can felt these feeling (the same feeling as our fellow Indonesian stripped from our right to receive information on 1990's) but on a larger scale, not about a country but the whole world information flow will be damaged...

Here we are...still. Sadly, everything about these bills has gone quiet. I have no idea what's going on anymore. I know that SOPA isn't active anymore, nor is PIPA, however we have other bills running at the moment that could easily take their place.

For all of my friends here who love dubstep, this video is relevant.
