URG!!! It seems I can never get a break. I was chatting with some family members on skype, there's a huge SEMPER get together from all over the world here in Trinidad and Tobago and since I can't leave home to attend the week long reunion I skyped. Some of you might remember me mentioning that I'm mixed race, mami is Indian and daddy is part Black part Spanish, well this was this reunion was on my fathers side of the family. Anyyyyhooo, so I was on skype with the family, everyone was there, It was good seeing faces I'd not seen in ages and I met some for the first time. I could hear the waves in the background, they rented a few houses on the beach for the reunion, the younger Sempers playing on the beach, it was brilliant and I was having a good time, till a couple of my cousins called me dregs, yes, DREGS!!!!
The remnants of a liquid left in a container, together with any sediment or grounds.
The most worthless part or parts of something.
REALLY!!!! I couldn't believe what I was hearing, coming from my own family members. They said I was the DREGS of the races cause I was mixed race. REALLY!!! because I was MIXED RACE!!!! I was being verbally attacked by my very own family members because I was mixed race.
Of course I left, with a bitter taste in my mouth and the urge to throw things, mostly ceramic or glass dishes. I was left very upset by the whole affair but not surprised, this has happened to me sooooooo many times before as much as on the Indian side as well. It seems that, even in this modern time, in Trinidad and Tobago, I'm still shunned and ridiculed by the races I'm mixed with, well just the Black and the Indian. I used to think, I had it ok, that my mum and dad got it just right being mixed race and all but nooooooooo. What makes it worse for me is that these people are my family, well educated and modern....just goes to show that ignorance knows no boarders.
