Hi - I am a firm believer that reading books is the best thing you can do (all the anime and manga lovers ... dont jump on my case). So this is for those brilliant souls who love to read
I have two
Sunshine by Robin McKinley : Awesome story about vampires and romance (yeah a bit girly, but not too much). The book I would grab if my house was on fire
Talisman by Stephen King : About a boy's journey to save his dying mother. Starts of a bit slow, but I have read it 3 times and each time I have cried and laughed along with the story

I loveeeeeeere reading.
Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series is a favourite.
David Weber's "Honor Harrington" series and "Safehold" series.
Most of David Gemmell's books.
"Twilight" was also good.
Though, besides a huge number of novels, I also like reading manga.

-All Harry Potter books
-All Lord of the Rings book, incl. The Hobbit
-The Toyer
-Hannibal
-Silence of the Lambs
-Deception Point
-Angels and Demons
-Da vinci's code
-The Teeth of the Tiger (Tom Clancy)
-Sherlock Holmes (All of them)
-Moby ****(Though I can't remember the story anymore)
-and some small novels like, War of the Worlds, Time Machine, etc...
There are others but I can't remember the titles now.

Mmmm, thats quite true...reading a book is usally only entertaining to those with a certain amount of imagination though...the selling point of a novel is that as you read you make up your on visual effects in your mind...its difficult for some people.
My favorite novel series currently is the Inheritance series: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr by Joseph Paolini btw.

Oh I like his books too but the problem in Sri Lanka is when there are more than one book in a series we rarely get the whole set and its so frustrating, I dont start reading the first book coz I will want to find out what happened and get upset when I cant ... hahah

You shouldnt let that stop you, his first series the Riftwar saga are all good books in their own right and you do not need to read the others to read one of the other books, I mean dont get me wrong, they are all great to read in succession but its not nessisary.
you should try looking for the books on somewhere like ebay.

Nice to see a lot of readers, there are books I like reading sci-fi, fantasy, history too many to list... but a couple stand out as really striking a cord and maybe changing the way I look at the world.
The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (the movie does not do the book justice)
and the subsequent series of books Adams wrote before passing away. It is a fun read and have learnt a couple of useful things:
- Always carry a towel
- The answer to everything, life and the universe is '42'
- The universe will never make sense, so stop questioning a reason behind everything and just live.
The other book is 'The Drifters' by James A. Michener, a rather heavy book about a group of young people leaving the US to travel Mediterranean during the Vietnam war. It deals with drugs, racism, rebellion, conformity, corruption... and a slew of other things.
Usually I read novels like Wheel of Time, or Stephan King in about a week but at times this book was so dense with ideas that I had to put it down every half dozen pages just to figure out what I should think about what I read - so it took almost a year giving a bit of time between reading sessions.

I love reading. My favorites right now are the Twilight series particularly book 4, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice also Northanger Abbey. The latter is kind of complicated though, I'm still trying to understand it. I also recently found a complementary novel to Pride and Prejudice. I've been reading it over and over. I also collect the books of Nicholas Sparks and Paulo Coelho. For some reason though I've never read any of the Harry Potter books. The movies were good though I guess.

I have to add one more - Clive Barker's Imajjica. Its one of those books you cant put down and it took me through the hours of sitting in hospitals during my mum's last days. Very grateful to that book
Also try Terry Brooke's Trilogy - Running with a Demon, Angel Fire East and Knight of the Word. In his latest installment in the Shannara Series, he ties them to this set beautifully

some great books have been mentioned in this thread there are almost to many to mention in one place. i would like to note one extraordinary science fiction book called "Ender's Game" by Orison Scott Card. there are 6 sequels and another 4 book series that starts with "Ender's Shadow" which tells the story through another perspective. all of the books as a whole are truely worth while have received a number of awards. to the skeptics of sci-fi or the series in general i say to at least read "Ender's Game" and "Ender's Shadow" they are both very enjoyable reads. i would go on suggesting more books but i would end up writing a novel of my own.

"Holes" by Louis Sachar.
Can't tell you how much I love this book, ever since I first read this book in elementary (I believe) I couldn't stop rereading it. I cannot count how many times I've read this book, but recently, after finally buying the book, I've drifted from it...must be the Harry Potter hype, lol.
Heh, Holes is my favorite book, but Louis Sachar isn't my favorite author. It's between William Sleator, Christopher Moore and Louise Rennison. If you know these authors, it will seem weird that I'm brooding between them.
P.S. To me, the movie Holes does the book no justice...and that just sucks...

I rarely get interested in novels. However two series that I think are really good are the Halo and Karin series. I'm a huge fan of war history (and predictions of futuristic warfare) and mystery type novels, so these two just amazed me. Another that i really likes is a book called Marine Sniper. It's a true story about Sgt. Hathcock who had the most confirmed kills in the Vietnam war. Other than that ive only tried to get into some of the Stephen King novels..they have failed me..
Also if anyone knows of any good novels having to do with apocalypses, (aftermath, how people lived after a nuclear war, etc) please message me the titles.

Others that I enjoy are.
- Vampire Huter D novels

- From Christian Death to Death, The Art of Rozz WIlliams

- 1 Litre no Namida, the diary of Aya Kito

While Harry Potter was of course childish it was also nice and simple and well written (although it got a bit long winded in the end)
But as for Twilight Books ... I have no words to describe how excruciatingly bad they were - especially the last one. I mean forget the story (which was terrible) it was just so badly written!!!
I have also taken to reading the Harry Dresden novels ... they are both funny and well written and can totally take you away.
I'm a Lemony Snicket fan :D love his books especially "The Series of Unfortunate Events"
I also like Neil Gaiman's books, "M is for Magic", "Interworld", "Coraline", etc..
And also Dan Brown, you just gotta love "Angels and Demons" and "The Da Vinci Code"
I am also a fan of Neil Gaimon. Try his 'Neverwhere', 'Stardust', 'American Gods', 'Anansi Boys' and his latest 'Graveyard Book' which while a bit childish is funny and won a lot of awards
(Stardust was the last book I read to my mum when she was dying and it made her laugh in all her pain - so it has to be good, right?)
And of course "Good Omens" - a well written book about the end of the world. In one word "Hilarious"!!

I've considered reading (books, mangas and e-books) as part of my system. during my childhood days, those were my playmates and past time (all those picture books, how nostalgic) and spent most of my breaks(during school time) at the library either borrowing books or reading there. Up until now I still buy books (I miss them if I haven't read them for sometime) To cut the long story short, I was and still am a bookworm before being an otaku.
So, back to the topic, I consider The Little Prince and The Alchemist as my all time faves. recently, I'm into The Immortals series by Alyson Noel

if you're into mythology, you should try the Alchemyst Series (seriously, its spelled with a y).. the main character is Nicholas Flamel, with appearances by Joan of Arc, Ares, Niddhog, etc..
if history is more your thing, any book by Valerio Massimo Manfredi.. my favorite is the Alexander trilogy.. starring Alexander the Great.

The Da Vinci Code was quite interesting when I first read it last year. I'm not sure why so many made a huge fuss over it. It was a fictitious story anyway.
I read some of the Harry Potter books since I was mostly into the movie but I loved the Deathly Hallows... the ending was superb!!!

1. Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa
2. Art Of War by Sun Tzu
3. Dark Tower series by Stephen King
4 tie between various Dean Koontz novels and Stephen King novels.
That about sums it up, I've read far too many books to actually list them all in order, to be honest.....It's split between fiction works and non fiction.

Ooooh. I have the same sentiments as you have on The Name of the Wind. I bought it solely based on the mesmerizing words of Kvothe, the main protagonist, at the back of the book. I am still waiting for the second book, and it's just frustrating because I've been waiting for it for two years. But still, I love it. And I like Bast more than Kvothe; I don't know why.

I rarely read, haha, I honestly haven't completely a book in so long.
However, one that I've been reading for a while is The Pact by Jodi Picoult. It's about a teenage couple who were basically perfect.. but the girl is seemed to have committed suicide and the gun has one more bullet which was apparetly was meant for the then present botyfriend. Pretty interesting but I just.. can't.. read books, haha.

Excluding manga/manhwa, list your 5 favorite books ever and the author who wrote them.
Mine are:
1. I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
3. Violet and Claire by Francesca Lia Block
4. The Beggars Ride by Theresa Nelson
5. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
To be honest it was really hard to decide on 5, but that's because I love books so much. Even though I had so many more to pick, I chose to make this only 5 because I know others may not have 10 favorites.
Please share with us what material you like reading! It's always great to hear of different peoples literary preferences! :bingo:

1. The Left Hand of God by Paul Hoffman
2. A Song of Ice and Fire (technically, not one book, but, meh) by George RR Martin
3. The Black Company (again, a series) by Glenn Cook
4. Go Rin No Sho by Miyamoto Mushashi
5. Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey
There are more, many many more, too numerous to mention. But these are some of the ones I love most.

2. 1984 by George Orwell
3. the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
4. Across the Nightingale Floor by Liam Hearn
5. Cloud of Sparrows by Takashi Matsuoka
I know 2 of these are series but I cant decide which out of the series is my favorite. And I have many more books but these are the books I have or will read again and probably many more times.
Have to mention Shiokari Pass by Ayako Miura =)

1. The Little Prince - Antoine D'exupery
2. The Idiot - Fyodor Dostoevsky
3. The Last Unicorn - Peter S. Beagle
4. Pride & Prejudice - Jane Austen
5. The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexander Dumas
That was really hard... there are a number of them that could probably have tied for anything under my top 3 favorite stand alone novels. Series, non-fiction titles, and graphic novels are an entirely different ball park too.
I just left out series all-together, because as a whole some of them are on a totally different scale than stand alone novels are...I don't think I could have picked out a particular one from any of the series I love >.<
Anyhow, what did you particularly like about The Left Hand of God? I've been meaning to read that one for a while now, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I've been doing a foray into sf and ya stuff while I wait for the next asoiaf book and the tv series.

I really enjoyed The Left Hand of God because Hoffman paints an amazing picture with his words. From the early plight of Thomas Cale, to the troubles he's forced to endure at the end of the book, it's a rollicking ride quite unlike any book I've ever read. The world in which the book is set is unique; it manages to be grim and brooding, dark and gritty... and also, light, and at times almost joyous.
It's filled with unlikely love, if that's your thing. I personally couldn't give two shillings about romance plots, yet they factor quite heavily into the story and help mark the changes in the young protagonist's personality. Cale goes from being a twisted, monstrous weapon made to serve a specific purpose, to something that borders on actually being human.
I could go on and on and on about the book, but to really make sense of what I'm saying, you have to read.
Heh, thanks, Tambulance, I must compliment your tastes, as well.
Cheers,
Alex

i place the booked tittled ''Running out of time'' as #1 because aside from treasures i want the book with...like suspense like ''what will happen next'' or ''Does this book will have another season''

I noticed that a particular genre I like to read are somewhat suspense thriller. I'm not sure if that is right. Coz I like to read Jason Bourne series. A genre which involve war times. A genre which involves somewhat like people get murdered and the the protagonist try to solve the case only he is the one one targeted. I don't know what type of genre those particular books I have mentioned but I really like to read them.
