Just putting the security programs on my new comp and i was wondering if anyone knew of any free programs that were better than MSE and Spybot to put on it?

AVG is free, but I never used it before so don't know how it works, personally I don't think anti-virus is that important... I've installed a paid one but it has never even detected one virus (A good thing, but makes me think it's useless) as long as you don't go to unknown sites that popped up during a google search you should be fine.

Try taking a look at these programs below on the link~ My personal suggestion for a free antivirus would be Comodo~ it did keep my pc safe till I upgraded to a paid antivirus~

I used Avast! as my antivirus and Malwarebyte's Anti Malware as an extra, I run a quick scan even now and then.
Being careful is the best defense though.

Truth be told, MSE is a fairly decent Antivirus with a good detection rate. Spybot is also fairly good. I would also go with Cookie Cleaner, just for cleaning things up. You can also use it to clear out your registry of unused entries.

Eh, I heard Norton got better as of late, but I still don't trust them. It was great early on - turned into a bloated software that wasn't worth the time- now is decent again.

I use the following programs all are freeware and downed from cnet.com which is a good resource for any sort of program you may need.
A.V.G. = General All around protection
ad-aware - adware, mal-ware trojens.
Mal-aware = spyware, mallware
cc-cleaner with extra package also from cnet. A MUST have.. Have you ever tried to delete a cookie or other garbage and cannot. This will. including "reference data" from pdf, and other programs.
W.O.T. web of trust = looks like a fruit loop icon in different colors. great for like ggogle search results. shows right next to "Each" result against bogus sights, and other problem sights.
And lastly your next computer system try to get a 64 bit system not the standard 32 it. Seems like a{?} what the hell thing. But 64 bit systems are 2x as hard to hack, & manipulate and the difference is very real and has kept the house main computer fine while lesser 32 bit systems where fried from mal-ware and a wyrm about 2 yrs ago. and that was with M.S. Onecare did not nothing
DO NOT use
Avast - control freak program locks-up what it does not like.
spybot - decent old school but better out there with out issues.
Go to cnet, com and read their reviews they are one of the main 1-stop shops for info on gadgets, programs all of it.

personally i love using Nod32, and there are alot of sites to find free username and password for it..
then i would recommend, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware to be used at least once a month for the safety purposes, its free to use, unless you want extra service for it, which imo isnt really needed.. then download Ccleaner for clearing up files of your system.. well, thats it.

I thought you need to pay for Norton? Is there a free version of it?
Oh well, I use AVG and it's great

yes authentic norton requires a yearly subscription. there are trial versions which only work for 15 and 60 days (for brand new pc).
I was using a "deep freeze" software before - not really a security software but it worked for me against all sorts of viruses.
security software, free or not, can only protect you as much as it can. it all comes down on how or where you browse the net.

i use avast! it has a limited time but it works really well. AVG is great too.
for my laptop tho i don't have any security software bc well, i dont think it's needed. i've had it for about 2+ years, and it still works fine. never got a bug or a virus, no malwares.

adding up to those who support avg i'm also going to suggest that :)
it's user-friendly and very easy to use!
scanning for example is user-sensitive which means that , while you're using your pc it won't slow your pc down but rather take it's time scanning, and when you're not on your pc scanning will finish in no time..
