The May issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shonen Ace has announced that female quartet CLAMP will be collaborating with Production I.G on a new entry in the Blood franchise entitled BLOOD-C. CLAMP will be in charge of both the character designs and story development while Production I.G will be in charge of animation. The series will premiere July 7th 2011 on MBS and TBS.
The Blood franchise was created by Production I.G. as an original project. When many other companies were scrounging for manga and light novels to adapt, Production I.G's president Mitsuhisa Ishikawa dared to be different. His vision ultimately paid off, for the initial 45-minute long film Blood: The Last Vampire has since spawned a manga series, video game, and trilogy of light novels in addition to a 50 episode anime series, Blood+, which offers an alternate retelling of the original story. In 2009 a live-action adaptation directed by Ronny Yu was released to theaters under the title Last Blood.
As BLOOD-C is being proclaimed as an "original" project, it isn't clear if it will correlate with any of the existing Blood properties or be stand-alone series. At this time there is no word on how many episodes have been ordered.
Additionally, there are two other BLOOD-C productions in the works. Although it remains unknown what role it will play in the new series, a theatrical film pertaining to this new story is scheduled to debut in 2012. Mangaka Ranmaru Kotone will also be adapting the project into a manga which will launch in the July issue of Shonen Ace to hit shelves on May 26.
