I'm working from an ASUS now. I've had issues with the AC adapter overheating, but other than that it works obscenely well for a $320 laptop. It has a powerful display, five hour battery life on balanced running mode, and despite the fact that it's a small webpad the keyboard is easy for my hideous bear hands to type on. I'd recommended that brand, though i'm not familiar with the specific model you mentioned. Regardless, based purely on brand recognition, i'd say go ASUS and avoid Dell like they treat their screens with Yersinia Pestis.

Lenovo is an expensive brand for a laptop....depending on the model it can even match up to sony's expensive price .-.
I haven't had a laptop aside from my HP but with all the laptops my friend's own I think its the ASUS one that stands out. Very good performance and has the specs you want..
Gaming: ASUS G51/52/53 Has the specs you want or above that i think
You could also try MSI if you're okay with the brand. I haven't heard any complaints so far for it...
MSI cx420
SpeCs:
• 2.27GHz Intel® Core™ i5-430M Processor
• 4GB DDR3 RAM
• 500GB Hard Drive
• Intel® HM55
• ATi® Mobility Radeon HD547
• 1GB DDR3 VRAM
• 14” 16:9 HD LED wide screen display

I was having trouble finding out specifics on the models you mentioned. I did notice the Lenovo ideapad Z470 is significantly discounted right now if you are really interested in it. http://www.logicbuy.com/deals/lenovo-ideapad-14-inch-laptop/31243.aspx

Ya Think Pads usually are for the professionals, IBM's brand of laptops so they are expensive but very solid build (at least the business models are)
I'll say around 80% my computer engineering professors use Think Pad business/enterprise models.
Sony is just garbage.
Cheapest for your money is usually Dell or HP.
My Dell Vostro lasted me 5 years (still running actually PERFECTLY and handed down to my little brother, but using a new XPS 17 atm)
I would highly recommend Dell's business model Vostro.
They came out with a new line of Vostro
I would go with vostro over inspiron any day
the body for the inspiron is pretty cheap (so is a lot of HP models)

Dell is probably cheapest directly from their website.
I bought 6 systems from them so far.
2 Towers
4 Laptops (Vostro 1400, Studio 17, Vostro 3500, XPS 17)
If you are willing to go up to around $800 then try the new XPS series, its pretty awesome.
I'm considering getting another XPS 15/17 or try a different brand (Asus)
EDIT: Heres the XPS 15

Btw! My university get $75 to $100 off dell systems.
If you want I can give you the membership number and the discount code to bring down the price from 800 to 725. They have THE BEST SPEAKER IN THE WORLD.
I didn't care for the speakers at all since I always use headphones.
But once I turned them on I was amazed at the sound quality.
If you max out the volume, the table trembles from the subwoofer speakers.
JBL speakers, you can't beat that.

Thats why there are auctioning sites or buy and sell sites
like Amazon Ebay and many more
But I dont fully trust those who sells its either fake, broken or just a scam

I wouldn't recommend any Acer brands. The design is bland and performance isn't as great as it could be. I have one but I really want a new laptop. Lenovo, maybe?

I would highly recommend you Lenovo! There laptops are just so well built, it feels sturdy while maintaining that aesthetic look and weight.
I had a Lenovo S10 (Yup, its S10, their first model for notebooks.), im using it as a download server now and is usually up and running for 1 whole week! Its been 4 years and I haven't had a problem with it except for the card reader. I dont use it anyways.
I use Z460 on the office for a year now and I can say I am satisfied @ 2GB DDR3 of RAM and 1GB of Nvidia Graphics partnered with the Intel i5 Processor.
Lenovo IdeaPad Z460 is a good choice. You should also check the IdeaPad Y460 if you had the budget. And, I would recommend you to buy at a Lenovo Specialty Store, you can ask them if you can have a free Lenovo Bag or Mouse.
Just my two cents.
I wouldn't recommend any Acer brands. The design is bland and performance isn't as great as it could be. I have one but I really want a new laptop. Lenovo, maybe?
I agree with you, I had a friend with an Acer Aspire *****, cant remember the model. Its too bulky and the performance to price ratio isn't that great.
I don't know if they had updated their models as I haven't check upon them yet.
Here's my checklist for checking up laptops,
1. Brand (for Reputation, From the top would be Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus)
2. Processor (I would look for what the latest model are then check each of them on the internet)
3. Graphics (Should be at least 1GB)
4. Memory (2GB is enough for me because we can buy another stick separately)
5. Features (Bluetooth, wireless, card reader, etc.)
6. Screen Size (should be at least 14" and is widescreen)
7. Aesthetics/built (Shouldnt be flimsy)
8. Battery Life (I dont really check this cause I usually use my laptop plugged in)
9. Price (Price to performance Ratio)
