So most of you probably know about the recent hacking of the PlayStation network.
Sony now released to the press that the hacker may have stolen credit card information as well.

Not one, but two of their networks have been breached, suggesting serious security flaws in the system. Taking down their entire network also suggests that this is more than just a small loophole in the network but rather a design flaw.

So that is the reason... good thing I haven't done much with the PSN...

"Then, on Tuesday, after several days of near silence, Sony said that as a result of the attack, an “unauthorized person” had obtained personal information about account holders, including their names, addresses, e-mail addresses, and PlayStation user names and passwords. Sony warned that other confidential information, including credit card numbers"
"If ever Xbox wanted to snatch PlayStation users, this would be the time.”

Now they're in trouble.

There are also a lot of mad ps3 owners who can't play online. This is going to be a tough one for Sony.

Sony has attracted a lot of ire after some pretty questionable lawsuits, they're blaming Anonymous after a denial of service attack on their main site, but at this stage they've got no shortage of enemies. I'd hate to be the guy who has to narrow down the slew of extremely pissed off programmers who could exploit a security system design flaw in something like PSN.

I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a point and answer one of the most frequently asked questions today.

There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised. We learned there was an intrusion April 19th and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident. It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly this afternoon.[/I]

So according to the new update it was yesterday they found what was the hole in their security. It's been six days now? it is hard to imagine a kid could cause so much trouble, it must have been someone well organized. And there is a lot of online purchasing going on on PSN it can get quite serious...

The FBI is already on it, though i'm not sure if what you say is necessarily true. The fact that it took Sony so long to find out about such a massive breach seems to imply more to me that someone was asleep at the switch. I think it adds validity to darkpoetry's assertion that a critical security flaw exists in PSN.

Thankfully I've been able to still access Netflix during this. On a side note, I remember hearing a report that with a new version of the hacked firmware people were actually getting into a developer network and could purchase anything on the PSN store. Its crazy how messed up Sony's PSN system was put in place.
