View Full Version : Sleep...Ways to make it easier?

alright, so I have problems with sleeping...
Like it'll get me more than an hour and reach up to three hours that I can't sleep.
Do you guys know of a technique or two to make one sleep easier?
And no "funny" things included in the process, alright? (Like I'll need to buy this drug, drink it, then spit it and put it in a glass and drink it again... No... No can't do!!!)
Help is appreciated. :D

Same problem with me but when I'm very very tired I fall asleep easily.
Here's some advices:
1. Clear your mind from any thoughts.
2. Just close your eyes and you'll fall asleep eventually.(This is what I usually do.xD)
3. Make sure that no one will be able to disturb you.
Hope that helps

I have the same problem. It's annoying when I went to camp and everyone was sleeping while I lay there wide awake.
I suggest listening to music which is what I do. Helps if the music is instrumental.

Argh, I'm a thinker... I know of that technique of clearing the mind, but argh... It's hard especially when you think about a lot of things...@_@
I close my eyes... And can't rest peacefully... O_o
I've tried all those... But yeah, when I get tired and cleared my mind of thoughts, It's easy to sleep.
Thanks anyway. :D
Edit: At Music... Man! I have a lot of noisy songs... They don't help me at all... T_T
Maybe I should download soothign songs.

Easiest way is to tire yourself out so much that you'll just drop down.
It works most of the time, but not always. It's not that much easy, but I easily tire myself out.
(Try reading something boring)

mm the problem actually derives from ur habits..
staring at a screen or using your eyes for prolonged periods of time is what makes it so even if people tell you to close ur eyes, its just going to make you feel irritated and ur body will just find something else to keep u awake.
theres no "conventional" way to instantly get ur brain to flick the breaker to go into the first sleeping stage.. pills wouldnt otherwise be needed..
Try making a sort of "sleep mode" ambience.. turn ALL lights off, brush ur teeth, wash ur face, if possible change temperature to a semi-cold to u. (for me its 74) and not having stressful thoughts like(zomg tomorrow is monday and i have school) all at a set time to sort of build a habit.
i really dont recomend music.. as the changing tunes can and WILL stop ur senses from going into the last sleeping stage (meaning ur not gonna wake up feeling like 100 buks)

try humming......
after some minutes later ull be sleepy it works on me
Shinkirou
05-11-2009, 03:45 AM
Yeah, I don't think conventional means will work. Counting sheep does work RARELY for me...
I do think it has to do with the habit - me playing games and staring at the screen... Plus the fact I sleep always late... My body has grown accustomed to it. And I sleep late...too late...
Humming... Ima try that.

For me i Drink some Coffee and go to a cool and windy place then i relax my self and reorganize my thoughts... after that i magically go to a relax state and i can go to sleep more easily... works for me all the time....
i'm a thinker too.. i always think of irrelevant thoughts so i can't sleep early most of the time...
hope that will help out a bit... ^_^

Feld and others had good opinions about habits being important, clearing your mind to try and fall asleep is not quite right.
One thing to try is actual meditation, if you're wired you won't fall asleep but it will relax your body and help you focus, which may enable you to sleep or more likely just feel rested.
Try practicing breathing techniques, a simple one is just to observe ones own breathing. One trick is to focus on the feeling of air coming in and out of your nose, just observe ... don't interpet or try and change your breathing.
Even doing it for a minute can be a challenge so don't give up or feel discouraged if you can't focus too long. Try to practice for about 5 - 10 minutes, and see how you feel.
There are many other types of meditation techniques a quick google search may reveal one that suites you.

The human body sleeps in cycles of 90 mins or 1 1/2 hrs. It also loves routine. Watching anime till 1:00 a.m. one day, sleeping till noon and then expecting to sleep at night is just going to throw your whole sleep cycle out of whack.
Try to give yourself a set time to sleep everyday and set your alarm to cycles of multiples of 90 mins. 3 hrs or 4 1/2 hrs or 6 hrs and when the alarm goes off, get up and dont over sleep. Dont sleep at odd times however tired you are and just force yourself to keep the schedule. It will take some time, but eventually, you will bring your body back into harmony
Remember sleep deprivation can lead to huge health issues as you get older. It can cause heart disease, a low immune system, loss of memory and can also contribute to an early on set of senile decay. So treat your body right and give it some routine and sleep.

I guess working out/exercising should do the trick. If your already tired, just play a game that gets real repetitive, an RPG for example and that should tire your mind out to help you sleep. ^_^
Then theres skys method! It should work(after watching the first episode of Suzumiya Haruhi chan no Yuuutsu here on OS~ should do the trick)

Im with kuyah on the exercise, doing push-ups untill the point of exhaustion will do the trick :) it also has some nice side effects :emh22:
If that dosn't work or I'm already tirred but just can't sleep I usually let my mind dooze off following random thought patterns. Try to let go of control, just let one thought lead to the next and you'll be fast asleep before you know it

think of good things! hehe
example, me after playing DotA and winning, i always think of my moves while sleeping then when i wake up it's already 2pm hehe
also always position your legs higher than your body, 2 pillows is enough (angle of 10-20)^_^

Hahaha ! Marinne, that's the exact thing I wanted to say but.... Oh well. Playing and winning a DotA (or alternates) will make you sleep early, dude. It's like... dreaming in a sea full of calming waves and breezy winds... Oh, summer. Btw, dude.. If that still doesn't work. Try sleeping pills. All of our suggestions are effective and if not, It means you have an insomnia.
Maybe ginseng will work ?

exercise doesn't work for me.
i find myself MORE awake.
caffine...OMG I WILL BE BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS
what i suggest is this:
1: turn off all lights
2: turn ceiling fan on high ( the higest speed it will go, no matter how stupid this sounds, it works!!) ****
3: lay on your back
4: open your eyes VERY wide for 10 seconds
5: then squeeze them shut for 10 seconds
6: repeat steps 4 thru 5 untill you get sleepy
7: then, get comfortable and close your eyes
8: then i PROMISE u will fall asleep
**** if u don't have a ceiling fan, then buy a fan. BELIEVE ME IT WORKS!!!!!!

One time way I tried counting sheep they turned into pokemon then sheep then pie then pizza...I couldn't sleep at all!

I do this...
1. Lay down to your bed
2.close youre eyes and try to imagine yourself to a nice place ( your Happy place)
3. Try to relax your breathing (ppl breath more slowley and deeply when they sleep)
4. Try to feel the imagination with all your senses ( what smells and voices there would be etc.
The main thing is not to think about problems and bad stuff ahed or behind you. If you set your mind into some mood your body reacts to the mood ( irritated or nervos etc.)
thats why you have to realx
It works on me so id hope youd try it
And about music,
If you are used to listnening it when you are going to sleep then feel free to do it( itll be better to listen to relaxing sounds not hard-trance or smth like that), but dont let it play for hours just about 30 minutes or so.
If you let it play when you sleep itll just distrube your sleeping...
Thats what i was thaught when i had sleeping problems and i hope they will help you out aswell

I usually listen to music when I sleep and it doesn't bother me. It's probably since I'm a heavy sleeper once I fall asleep. And when I wake up in the morning, my music is still playing.

Oh, I've never had a problem with falling asleep.
Here's my secret:
Step 1) Stay up very late into the night
Step 2) Repeat Step 1 every day
After you repeat the process a few times, you'll be sleepy all the time and will be asking for advice on how to stay awake instead.
Warning: not healthy; I do it anyways though

That's not a good idea. I was pretty messed up when I did that. I would stay up all night and I was ready to collapse during school. Then I would go home and sleep. Then I would wake up around midnight wide awake and then I would sleep during the day. It was a bad habit.

counting sheep might work but if you lose track you wake up trying to remeber your place.
going back to the music njaaks is right about the playlist thing also while listening to the music lie in bed with your eyes closed and visualize different scenarios that coincide with the type of music your listening to cause thinking about that puts your mind at ease while focusing on one thing you go into a dream like state and when you open your eyes sometimes it seems like only one song has passed but really you played through your playlist twice trust me on that it happend to me many many times.
or just eat some turkey whic releases serotonin into the brain which cause drowsiness or a litle bit of chocolate for endorphins which usually has the same effect

My best friend and I are usually the type to worry about too many things before going to sleep. We figured out that if we use blackout curtains, and eyemasks to sleep, and in my case ear plugs, then we fall asleep pretty quickly.
It's hard for humans to have such refined self control as to force themselves into a meditative sleep within 5 minutes, so having these few outside sources for help cuts down the time from about 2 hours to 6-10 minutes. If I get really desperate, I have a cup of warm milk and then settle down again in the dark. Ocean waves help too so if you can find a download of it, you'd be set. Basically you just want to have complete darkness and some rhythmic sounds (like the sound of your heart beating if you wear earplugs like I do, or ocean waves if you need to drown out your thoughts.)
(and I totally didn't notice till after I posted that this thread is about 800 years old. sorry!)

I've heard that you shouldn't watch TV right before going to bed. I always watch TV before bed so I don't know if it will help. I'm a thinker too and it takes me about 1 hour to 2 hours to fall asleep. I've yet to find anything that helps me other than just being really really tired or taking Niquil. If you can find anything that helps, I'd like to know. :3

Doing some workout type stuff (push-ups, crunches, etc) usually makes me feel too tired to do anything other than laying down and trying to sleep. Maybe it won't help you actually get to sleep, but it'll tire you out a bit. (or a lot, if you do a large amount of each type of excersize)
At any rate, I'm also the type that has a hard time getting sleep. Being up late is part of my natural sleep cycle nowadays, if I try to go to sleep before 12, I'll end up waking up in the middle of the night at 3 or 4. Yet oddly enough, when I go to sleep at like 2:30, I never sleep till noon. sometimes 11, but mostly I wake up at 9 or 10. Somebody shoot me with a tranquilizer dart!

This is simple...
1. Avoid anything that include caffeine.
2. Listen to a slow music or a music you already memorized.
3. Turnoff any light you have.
4. Stare on your PC which is in screensaver mode.
5. (If step 4 doesn't work) Play a very boring RPG.
6. (If both 4 and 5 don't work) Scan your PC and wait for it to finish.
7. Do jumping jacks until your tired enough.
8. Draw doodles. (Only random doodles is allowed)
9. (For the last resolve). Drink coffee or coke in the morning, then take some cold pills at night. (drinking milk at night is better)
This can adjust your bio-clock...

This is a good way...
Steps to fall asleep instantly:
1. Stretch under a doorway, reaching for the top (or ceiling if you could reach it already).
2. Do 30 sit ups.
3. Do 20 push ups.
4. Drink a warm glass of milk.
5. Lie on your bed for around 20 minutes, without thinking. Lights and eyes should be closed.
6. Sit down.
7. Get someone to hit you on the back of your head.
8. Repeat step 7 until you get knocked out.

What I've done when I can't sleep is forcing my body to stay more awake until the time I need to sleep.
Like this one.
Normally I intend to sleep 10 in the evening but during summer time it went to the earliest of 11 of the evening to 4 of the morning.
Do something that will make you focus until you feel you need to sleep.
Sometimes....I used to play some melody that surely cause me sleep

For me, if I eat anything that has sugar or caffeine in it, I know that for me the buzz does not last long at all and I crash almost immediately... but when my mind is what is keeping me awake you have to just listen to some kind of recording or read a book until you can't keep your eyes open. Or heck, force yourself to not sleep so the next night you crash. If you can stay awake and focused the following day!

There are all kinds of things to take to 'induce' sleepiness, but basically, your body will crave sleep if it realizes it's sleepy. In other words, purposely staying up starves your body of sleep until you realize you're hungry for it so you can binge by sleeping through the night and getting back on track :D

Be tired?
My rituals for a good night's rest is tiring myself out before going to bed. Forcing yourself to sleep without being tired isn't healthy. So basically, do something that'll bore you or something that'll drain you out. For me, that's reading or watching anime (of course, anime just tuckers me out after watching it for hours on end hehe). Then, I go to bed after turning on my fan (and 'cause I have a phobia of the darkness, I turn on some christmas lights I set up in my room ^^;).
Lying in bed, completely tired, with the white noise of my fan and the cool temperature coming from it helps me.
If you have sleeping problems, see your doctor! My friend used to have mad sleeping problems because she was stressed out all the time. She got a prescription for sleeping meds. If you're really losing sleep and it's taking a toll on you, take some sleeping meds. For real, sleep is the best thing.. next to food and anime. >:]

hmmm...
1. RELAX!! Be calm, if you want to sleep, relax and clear your mind and thoughts...
2. Sleep in a comfortable position and place
Oh and if you're having a hard time with step 1 and 2... First clear/confront the source of your problems... Mostly, confronting them and doing what you need to do about them, helps clear the mind when your going to sleep.
If all else fails, listen to a music while trying to get some sleep... The music depends on your choice, which relaxes you.. But, mellow and sweet tones should be the best...

Remember sleep deprivation can lead to huge health issues as you get older. It can cause heart disease, a low immune system, loss of memory and can also contribute to an early on set of senile decay. So treat your body right and give it some routine and sleep.
yup i certainly agree, and recent studies shows that it can shorten your lifetime...[people who does not sleep has shorter lifetime than those who do]
its just about your body clock, environment and lifestyle can be the possible factors of your sleep deprivation.
try to adjust on healthier side like
-setting/ managing your time well
-settling things which causes you worries.
-making your environment less disturbing and that can put you on ease.

I would say the first thing you need to do is determine what is keeping you awake. Eating before bed will keep you up as will having to pee. Make sure you take care of the basics.
Then like some of the others have said:
make a routine for yourself and stick with it ! Go to bed at the same time (as close to it as you can)
Wake up at the same time. ( dont sleep during the day )
Avoid stimulating things like caffeine ( not everyone is affected much) [ I dont happen to be affected until very large doses ]
Avoid exercise right before bed as this gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing in your system ( not conducive to sleeping )
Avoid planning things in your mind.
Focus on relaxing your body. This gives your mind something to do while helping your body relax at the same time.
Think about relaxing each muscle starting with your head and working your way down to your feet. Focus on each muscle individually rather then trying to relax your whole body.
Chances are that by the time you have finished relaxing your body.. your mind will have cleared and you may find yourself sleepy.
Also keep in mind that most people need about 8 hrs of sleep a day. Some as few as 6, others as much as 10 or so.
Could it be that you dont need any more sleep?

I think you just need to clear your mind first. Look at any blank space, like a wall or something. Listen to music, but not rock ofcourse. IDK! Try not to do anything in bed like laying down to watch tv (anime) or play games or read. Try to get your body use to using the bed only for sleeping. Also try to turn off lights, get comfortable and cozy hours before you actually want to sleep. It might just take you that long to wind down. I also use to play nature music when I sleep. I have a soundtrack of raining in the forest. It helped me a lot.

1. Lie in your bed
2. Let loose, release all your tension
3. Clear your mind
4. Close your eyes
5. Don't think of anything and just close your eyes. You will notice that your eyes feel heavy. Ignore that and just continue to lie there, not thinking of anything
then the moment you open your eyes, CRAP it's 7AM!!! I'm gonna be late.
