View Full Version : If Internet Cease To Exist...What Would Happen?

I have search through the archive one by one, and i have found none about
the topic that i am going to discuss..sure there is one saying that,
"What lengths would you go to if the internet wasnt available to watch anime on?",
but that is different..

well here goes..:goodmood:
as the title say,

"IF INTERNET CEASE TO EXIST...WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?"

i would say that..

~the number of people in the park, playground or field will increase significantly,
because there is no more social network or online game that will keep
them stuck in front of their computer or laptop..

~the not-so popular national library..will become popular. this is because there is no more easy searching by just typing what you want to search and press ENTER. To search for information, we will need to manually search in the book or others reading material.

~the selling of DVD, album, music, movie and more..will increase. this is due there is no more place to "DOWNLOAD"..(well the word say by itself, there is no need to explain about it)

~some say internet make people become open-minded, so if the internet cease to exist, people will become narrow-minded? (Nah..i don't think so)

~the term "OTAKU" will only be known by people who live in Japan, because there is no medium to spread the term.. (I think....)

~the Otaku-Streamers site which everyone love so much including me, will never be born..:touched:

For now, that are all i can think about. I may add it later if i found others.
So, then..lets here others opinion about this..
i'm looking forward to it. :bringitout:

The problem that arises when you ask that kind of question is that internet is not an independent system; it is the result of an entire age of technology. The dissappearance of it would mean the dissappearance of a whole lot of other things that I won't bother to list.

Assuming, however, that it was only internet (for whatever uncomprehensible reason) that dissapeared, then the biggest impact would probably be isolation of communities. It would be alot harder (unless telephones still alive?) to communicate across the world, and the information network would virtually cease to exist. However...

Lets not forget that not so long ago we didn't even have internet. We got on fine without it (as far as I can tell, I wasn't alive that long ago). Information still spread at reasonable speeds through paper and speech and people could make comfortable livings. I suppose playgrounds would get more crowded though, and books would become more in demand. However as I like to say, lazy people always find a way (looks in mirror).

Man I'm getting off track alot today. Anyway to answer your question specifically to anime:

I would move to Japan.

There you go.

If the internet ceased to exist in our current time...the only logical thing I can think of is that a new and more improved version of the internet was invented...something like the fractale system from fractale. I can only think of technology as going forward. If the internet ceased to exist then we may have found a better way to spread information faster than the net. Probably so fast that its in real time.

But if for some reason, just like B0b said, and the internet was the only thing to have ceased to exist(I am assuming that we have still discovered the internet but for some reason it stopped existing) I think what you FiQ said in his post above would happen...for awhile. If the internet stopped existing then I think computer experts would start looking for an alternative replacement for the internet or maybe something better.

i see the point there Kobowo..
yep~ the technology will keep improving through time to time..and it will keep going as long people keep inventing new invention..
and yeah fractale system..quite a nice example there..haha :goodjob:

and Bob also give a very good opinion there, people will always find a way to make their life easier..
and move to japan..FTW~ LOL

i for one who has live through hard way before...
and now i can have all this technology..i admit that it made our life easier.

it just this thought of mine..that if we grown too attached to technology,
will it be good to us or will it be a burden to us..
so from there this discussion started.
i just pinpoint what mostly the people in this world use..
"INTERNET"

Looking forward for others opinion~:goodmood:

We are humans :3 we can learn to adapt. Of course it would take time but we more or less wouldnt really become an extinct species if our technology were to be lost. I can live without the internet....probably....net speed is slow anyways XD

positive...
1, People especially teenagers will tend to use their bones to do something like basketball, sports.. and not spending times all day playing online games and surfing the net
2. Rape cases will greatly reduced.. trust me.. most of the people used internet just for porn...
3. Students will learn to do a research in a book rather than a (enter keyword -> search -> copy-paste) funny but true.
Don't mind this it's for myself

4. Self reasoning.. i wouldn't have facing this situation right now that hurting me so much if it wasn't for that internet...

negative
1. Communication is not as fast as internet can do
2. We can't see or chat our loved ones that is far away
3. Gathering information will be so slow
4. No streaming sites..
5. Less entertainment

We would adapt. Probably would have less obesity in America. People don't go outside anymore and enjoy nature. Everyone is cooped up on computers and tvs.

it seem plausible with all that you mention~

and @clipse026
yeah, people will atleast get a healthy body rather than stucked in front of monitor..
luckily we otaku know how to manage our time~ ^^

It would destroy research and the accessibility as well as the sharing of information. Being in lawschool, I spend countless hours online researching and that would be astronomically increased if I had to do the research through lawbooks. Also, it would be a tireless activity to find out if a law or statute had been repealed, modified, or overturned. It would also elongate and increase the cost of obtaining information from opposing counsle as well as discovering information pertaining to my case.

It would effect the medical field drastically as well. It would complicate the gathering of patient information as well as restrict research in the field. A breakthrough in medical technology would take forever to reach the field and enter practise. It would also hinder the transportation of medicine as well as the other goods.

There are charitable organizations trying to bring the internet to thrid world contries to allow them access to information they would never have had elsewise. It opens up trade and stimulates the economy by allowing people easier access to goods and services. It creates jobs and marketplaces that would otherwise be non-existent. It allows companies to keep in contact with suppliers and keep track of inventory. It alerts us to problems that would take ages to discover otherwise.

While it may make kids more proactive and libraries more popular. the adverse effects it would have on society and technology would be detrimental. I fear the day the internet is no longer. Just like anything else, it has its downsizes but the benefits far outway the detriments. I think it is very shallow minded to believe the world would be better off without it and I find it hilarious that you posted this on a site on the internet and through a site that allows many of us access to shows that we would have no other way of watching. Many animes on here never made it to the US and, without the internet, we would never be able to watch.

Plus, schools have internet since it has been proven to help kids with learning. It allows them access to information that would be nearly impossible to obtain elsewhere. It also allows news to travel quickly. The earthquake in japan is a great example of how the entire world was alerted to it almost immediatly and keeps us up to date almost to the minute.

Again, I fear the day that internet is no more since it will plunge our society into shambles and set us back many many decades.

FiQ5149 Did a paper on this in undergrad and a what if situation, however, the paper was about what if the internet was never available.

I totally agree with a solar flair, however, this wouldnt just knock out the internet or computers but would effect the entire electrical grid meaning there would be no power and all electronics would be fried. This would mean wide spread death, by means of people on life support, pace makers, or in critical conditions in hospitals would die. The resulting panic is almost unfathomable. Worse thing is there is almost no way to defend ourselves against such a situtation other than have measures available to try and get electrical plants back up and running as soon as possible and replacing all the transformers across the world quickly. Again, this is almost impossible to imagine and counter.

be thankful we have invisible shield, North and South Poles magnetic field provides protection on earth
btw its Solar Flare
anyway back to the topic
Internet, I use it for doing homework and other information resources
if internet fails then there is always the Trusty Library

Internet use for entertainment
if Internet fails, there is Television and Radio

Internet use for Communications
of course emails and chats, there is your Phone

Everything has an alternatives

True the magnetic shield does offer some protection but not complete. If a solar FLARE (im sorry i suck at spelling) hits the earth at the right angle it will go straight through. Its the biggest threat to the earth. Funny thing one is due to hit the US in December 2012.

So the good things would be... I guess, no more identity thefts, it might be a way to avoid more corruption, and things related to internet crime.

I know for sure that one thing would not exist without the internet and that's my current 7 year relationship with my boyfriend >< Which I think would break me if that was the case :[ It would make me really sad. Now that I think about it, I don't know how to really survive without him :?

Don't want to be mean, but identity theft happened way before internet came about.

Oh yeah about your boyfriend, well... for me, I kinda liked the old style way of courting :D If you are a Filipino, then I think you know well about the old Filipino way of courting, serenading I mean, because when there is internet, I feel no safe every time I am courting a girl through chat or facebook... because I don't know who could she be looking at? or whatever, she might be making eyes with other guys.

I'd be mixed in my feelings. While i'd lose my favorite source of entertainment, my job would get easier because i'd get fewer parents demanding i give their child a treatment they read about on the internet, ignoring me when i say that treatment is either useless or for something else entirely. Pisses me off, but i NOOOO... i'm not allowed to tranquilize fussy parents!

If Internet cease to exist what would happen ...hmm
being positive first though
- many people will be fond of playing sports
- and socializing with others [?] like hanging out with friends
- also the library [where is it in the philippines @__@] will be crowded as mentioned
- some people will get serious on things that they like
- and for me , parents and I wouldnt be fighting anymore
- no paying of expensive net bills
- also television shows will still be there [oh the irony of not having any television available at home atm ]
- less hackers and viruses on you lappy and desktop[if they still use this if net cease to exist]

negative side lets see ...
- i will be bored and you will see me laying on my bed all day like a dead person
- some things are hard to find , even if you went to the library [ex. i always have a stomachache if im inside a library @__@ seriously]
-i got nothing anymore .__.
- socializing is now limited to your neighbors , school and etc :D[trollface.jpg]

but asking humans and their brain usage
one might have a solution to something
and discover things then again , some humans just want to discover more things than the other people

If internet cease to exist
- most people will not own a computer
- it's hard to create a research paper
- no more torrents xD
- no piracy
- no social networking sites
- most people will enjoy reading books
- library is a new spot to stay
- hard to pay the bills and a long line shows up
- withdrawing on ATM will become manual because there's no internet
- foreign exchange rate will not be accurate and it will be more disaster
- the news information will be always delay
- technology will not evolve fast anymore because what's the point of no internet
- self learning will be hard
no OS

If internet cease to exist:

*My mom would be happy
*My sister would be cut out from here internet addiction
*There's a possibility that my eyes would not continually go bad XD

I would go back to the life I had without the existence of internet. I watch animes from the TV through Animax. I would go to the library for research.

There wouldn't be any difference in my life, except that, I can't meet good friends through the internet anymore ):

There is good news and bad news about it.
The bad news is: Boredom will rule over the world!! And also, student will do the hard way to research some random topic.
The good news is: You are more eager to go outside and play at the park with friends and you family than inside you house with nothing else to do. In other words, you will be more close to your family and with your friends.

If internet didn`t exist then Anime wouldn`t be that popular amongst citizens and EYE vision will remain good for those people who live and use internet for a living. Without the internet not only entertainment uses are cut down by over half. However if internet no longer existed communications would be hurt majorly and information would travel at a slower pace. The internet is a host for all types of information just waiting to be researched. Without the internet many things would fail to obtain in some cases dire information. For example, say China or Japan or even us the USA finds a cure for a certain type of killing disease and there is no internet available. People rapidly dying from that disease would not even know there was a cure for it until countless people have died from it when they receive the information.

As well from communications, the trading companies would suffer greatly as the trading industry work off the internet, stock holders etc. which also bring up buying stocks. If there is no internet which could tell a stock holder when to sell or buy a certain stock to get a profit many people would sell or buy at the wrong time. People would lose thousands, millions of dollars. People would go bank-robbed by this.

Entertainment wise. Well for us otakus' it will greatly hurt us. We will probably learn japanese and then move to Japan to watch our anime shows until Japan becomes overpopulated and will not except anymore people wishing to come to Japan. Thus some hardcore otakus that could not live without anime would commit suicide, lowering the world population. Now for other people the internet could have been used to watch movies through websites (ie: netflix) at a cheap rate than going out to the movie theater or buying the dvds. As well the gaming companies that host online games (ie: Nexon, Blizard) would end up closing and thousands of people losing their jobs putting this economical time we're at in even a harder time. Now those gaming companies that sell PC games would still be able to make money, but not as much, probably cut their income by half, now that the internet is gone and most likely overseas buying of said game.

Job wise. The IT field is the fastest growing job industry at this current time. If said internet suddenly cease to exist. Millions of people would lose jobs. There would probably not be enough jobs to come around for those who have lost their current job in the IT Field.

Lastly as other users stated, technology is always going to advance as time goes on. If internet does cease to exist then I could only logically think that an even faster and better way of information traveling has been invented.

(if I messed up anywhere that I stated is probably because I am half asleep at this current time)

If it ceased to be, we'd just do without I guess. There'd be riots even if there were no one to blame, people would freak out. Jobs and livelihoods and hobbies and connectivity depend on the internet. It'd all sure be a sign of tenser, even apocalyptic times XD Seriously!

Life would adapt and go back to how it used to be. I survived growing up with no internet, so it can happen. I think my kids would go insane though. Even my 3 year old knows how to get on to Disney.com to play games. Triva wouldn't be as fun though because we'd never find the answers. My family and I are always trying to out pop culture each other, so we depend on Google and IMDB to prove who's right.

If the internet ceased to exist, at this point I think alot of the younger generation would be lost. Considering when I was younger the internet still wasn't even half of what it was at this one. So I think they'd be lost for a while. A lot of confusion since a lot of businesses and work require the internet and such to properly operate. It'd be very troublesome at first but slowly an surely everyone would grow accustom to such things and it would return to the way it was prior to the huge internet boom...if anyone an remember that fully. I could go more indepth but I don't feel like typing a 5000 word essay.
