ugh! i hated that part of the ending! light was soooo out of character...i mean he always, always, always think 3 steps ahead. it took me almost a month to get over it!! LoL. i understand that he has to die and i think ryuk writing light's name in the notebook was perfect, but the part where he messed up with mikami ruined the ending for me...it was too off...it seems as if the creators just wanted to rush in and get it over with XD.

There is a stark difference between intelligence and personality.
Smartness or Intelligence is very broad and hacking ability would fall under intelligence.
As a CSE/EE major I can tell you programing is an extremely difficult and complex procedure. Extremely few programmers can actually read code and understand it's purpose. Its like puzzles built by puzzles.
John Nash, many know him from The Beautiful Mind, is far from mentally stable but is still considered a genius. He may not be politically and militarily strategic nor cunning and deceptive, but still genius.
Albert Einstein is also a genius, however, only a genius in the field of mathematics and science. Einstein was also part philosopher, just like The Laughing Man was depicted.
Social ability has very little to do with my concept of intelligence.

How exactly would a genius achieve something that exceeds the accomplishment of others if he is regarded as a myth, or a collection of individuals?
Further to this, how can you mark and distinguish a 'genius' without there being tangible proof? You are misunderstanding something: a genius is an individual who has achieved some work of note using his or her intelligence. Look at the defination of prodigy;

"an unusually gifted or intelligent (young) person"

Any character who is considered a genius type are all genius. But it all depends on what category they have expertise on. There are those who are geniuses on detective work, others on manipulation and so on. I like to watch an anime whose character is a genius in ALL categories.

i think "the smartest character" cannot be judged by a mere comparison of intelligence and creativity, lelouch and light yagami is given the freedom and chance to show off their creativity/ intelligence with the ability they gained. while you got conan and shikamaru who has a different approach of audience. in my opinion though, i'd say kudo shinichi and light yagami =P
