direct download:
Avast Anti-virus (http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe)

Avast is the anti-virus I'm using right now. It's freeware and only asks for a registration code every 14 months or so. All they'll ask for is an e-mail for the reg code.

It's a nice anti-virus, keeps all the generic and most harmful viruses from entering the computer.

haven't heard of this anti - virus program yet... is it really that good?? ^^

Much better than AVG or any other free anti-virus. Its what im using also

Shinkirou

Yeah, what mikko said.

According to a magazine(I won't say it's title for two reasons - copyright and I've forgotten. :P), Avast is better than AVG and one of the best free anti-virus progs around. They get their money by selling professional copies(more powerful than the free ones and used in corporate and business comps). Home Edition is completely free. It was also said that AVG is only good at spyware but not that much at real virus.

...It's a very good anti-virus, been using it since uninstalling Norton.

If what we've said isn't enough, you can check out their official site. :)

Yes! I'm also using this Anti-Virus program. A hacker friend of mine said that Kaspersky can't detect his viruses, but Avast! can!

I'm a lot more happier with this Anti-Virus and it's absolutely free!

Wha? I didn't know that. People said Kaspersky is the best AV prog, but turns out to be, Avast is even better... lol. Maybe it's because of my settings(my settings are set to normal not higher than that).

DoubleZeta

I set my Avast! at the maximum protection. I always have the warning messages before running any program. XD

Yes, Kaspersky is the best anti-virus program as they say, but home-made viruses are not on their databases.

hahha yea before I got to my college I was using avast :D
I have to agree its good
but then my college had specific requirements and only approved certain protection programs... but anyway they gave away software that would normally cost like... $100 +... and thats what i'm using xD

DoubleZeta
05-09-2009, 09:43 PM
What software is that? Can we know? XD

It might protect better than Avast! is it some new kind of Anti-virus?

Shinkirou
05-10-2009, 01:21 AM
Avast is still the best for me. XD

His AV has a cost, so its commercial(unlike Avast Home Edition).

I'm using both AVG and Avast, and it's always Avast that gets to identify the viruses. I'm thinking of taking off my AVG :|.

Shinkirou
05-10-2009, 06:32 AM
They say AVG is just a spyware scanner...

In that case, Spyware doctor is better, but more RAM consuming.

Well, I'd advise you to get rid AVG... Programs take a lot of space in the hard drive, eh?

I'll try using this on my desktop computer before using this on my laptop, but I still trust Norton. xD

Id go with Antivir like what chiva has recommended to me cause its pretty effective so far i might say. It detected most of the stuff kaspersky and AVG and the other antiviruses i installed didnt detect.

Shinkirou
05-10-2009, 10:52 AM
Norton is commercial... >_<

And, according to personal experience and of a friend too, once we uninstalled Norton, we got a ton of viruses... =_= (I uninstalled it in my old computer way back in 2005 or so.)

I'm an avast loyal user. :PP

to me on my experience but there are no documents to confirm this

scale of 1-5 which 5 is the highest and 1 is lowest

NOrton Antivirus 3/5

Pros: good antivirus... up to date database... quality programs that they use to counter the latest virus... up to date...

Cons: it is not memory hog like the others (well on my exp anyway.. intel dual core 2.5ghz) but it does need massive update files. NOt recommended with cheesy slow internet speeds and low hard disks

AVG Antivirus 2/5

Pros: it means well when it is free.. Everyone likes free. Detects basic viruses around.

Cons: Being the program is free doesn't mean it has to be the best. Problem about free is that it doesn't have the complete package like internet security and also active scanning free. you need to purchase them to have full protection

AVAST! antivirus 5/5

Pros: Quality database for the antivirus. Good at detecting spywares and viruses. They are quick at updating and they proved it against antivirus 2009 issue that put windows users on their knees.

Cons: Also same as AVG. Full strength at database is not there unless you have proper license. You will just get trial version which is not detecing much.

Kaspersky Antivirus 4/5

Pros: Good antivirus program. It even has process monitoring. And it also has registry entry blocking.

Cons: You need to be an advanced user to know what these process are. Beginners will find themselves scratching their heads what is this alert and that every time they open some programs.

You can also try some of the dudes on the philippines. They have some quirky ideas on how to deal with advanced viruses that your antiviruses cant detect...

I dont know much about these guys who can create them. I just hear they hate those guys who create these viruses since some of the BEST viruses out there are philippine made.

AMA drop outs and STI dropouts make these anyway as they say.

these are just 2 of the programs i use but use it if you have these symptoms
these are some threats that were philippine made

Knight
[TLA]
[HBG]
ADVanced
SilentSoftech
ImgKulot
Funny UST
Destrukto
Krag
StrawBerryJuicer
Kxvo or Kavo (this one hits the psp and ipod really hard)
Mabuhay
Y!Worm or SOHANAD
Jaymyka
WinZip123
Sowar

if these symptoms appear try this program Noob Killer by Leerz

noob killerz direct download (http://leerz25.sitesled.com/files/tools/fixes/NOOB_KILLER.by.Leerz.u.zip)

just update it to get the latest antivirus database

Have your internet explorer blocked with ALL antivirus websites?
ever wonder what happened with it?
tried checking the list of blocked site on mozilla firefox and internet explorer. tried clearing cookies and scanned with antispywares and antiviruses dont work?

try this program.. this is my fav

quicksmash (http://www.4shared.com/file/49439376/457533bb/QuickSMASH.html)

i forgot the other one. it has the icon of balmung on ragnarok online.. that program really rocks and it is the ace of my IT friend here on the philippines... i dont know why there are so many elite hackers and virus programmers on the philippines... probably because no one is able to catch them i guess..

well thats all folks

i use avg and spybot search and destroy spybots pretty good but i dont think it would stand against some really powerful viruses

nc post, fire-san. :)

according to your post, AVG's the lowest. XD

...Yeah, many Filipinos are elite hackers...

Its probably because Philippine authorities won't really do much about them and its basically a haven here. I think one of the biggest online banking hack was done here.

If I am not mistaken, the creator of the deadly Love Virus, Onel De Guzman's, is now a free man. All charges was dropped. He would be probably be working on some big companies now. maybe.

Shinkirou
05-11-2009, 05:58 AM
Most probably...

I really haven't heard of the authorities apprehending a hacker much, 'cept for the one who blackmailed a university student by hacking his/her friendster account.

I just started using Avira (http://www.avira.com/en/solutions/home_home_office.html), so far it works pretty well. I had Kapersky (Kracked) but it kaput.

Avira doesn't feel as clunky as AVG and Avast, I can't say for sure how it stands up to newer viruses but if gives decent protection for free. A spyware program should be run at the same time (like spybot, spyware blaster etc.).

Anti-virus software changes quite a bit year to year and everyone has their own preferences so probably take a look at them all and see what fits your resources (computer wise).

I wanna try this AV...
mine sucks...

avich
05-11-2009, 10:39 PM
Avira is so light, if you tweak it a little, you won't notice it is there.

Remove the update display.

Open Avira
Click on Administration
Click on scheduler
Right click on daily update and select edit job
Click on next until you see Display Mode:
Set that to invisible.

Remove the avira ad. (Windows XP)

Click Start and then select Run.
Type in secpol.msc
Expand Software Restriction Policies (click on the +)
Click on Additional rules
Right click at any blank area on the right box (or right click on Additional rules) and select new path rule
Click on browse and locate avnotify inside the avira folder and click Ok (if you have installed avira by its default location, it would be located on C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\)
Set Security level to: Disallowed.
Click Apply and then click Ok.

Probably a false positive, but not sure until I get the exact details of the detection.

I'll try to swap AVG with Avast.. still you haven't mentioned the easiest way to stay clear of AV :) it is called mac ^^

avich
05-12-2009, 03:05 AM
Mac is not anymore safe from viruses. The only reason it was safe before was that only a few percentage of the world population are using it and little damage can be done if hackers target that. Apple now advice all mac users to run an ant-virus on their system.

The only OS I can think of that is almost invulnerable to viruses are custom made linux OS.

nah that is just a false positive though...
i just made sure so i disabled all my script support on one of the computers just to make sure

this program might have a programming similarity with the virus codes that is why it reports a false positive.

anyway you can also try the long manual way to disable antivirus...

i can do a little guide if you want but if i really have the time i will just do it though...

What do you think will happen if you are using avast and another anti-virus program?
I'm using Symantec Endpoint Protection.

what do you mean??

Actually for me NOD is good because I'm using it..... (some anti virus sure is better)

but if some virus cant be detected you can put it to the anti virus folder so that your software will know that if it attacks again it will know that it is a virus... polymorphic viruses really put the creeps on me... AVG is also good but lacks improvements...
just update your anti virus... and it will sure to protect your pc from those attacks
