I believe it's for the site. Websites that have .com are not for free and the owner must pay per month or so.

the donation is for maintaining this site available without donation this site is dead... many of OS animes are now licensed and how was it that we can still watch it??and so the donation goes in.. various reason?maybe..

look what happened to crunchyroll, after those people who uploads without rest, the site just devour it making it like they're the one who uploads it(buseness!)..... now noone can watch without money, i'm so dissapointed, ilove watching Gintama there but now they're making it's popularity so many watcher can view it by money... <== this is what i think or maybe i should just donate again

well they're doing their job to earn money and some videos are still available... and i still love that site ^_^

my theory is that they use Donation for protection

Donations are for paying up bills for keeping the website up, like hosting. And hosting so many animes needs alot of space, which means the costs for such host is prety high, since afaik they dont use external sources for videos.

that's web hosting aswell. Cuz you pay for the host which has a domain, how u use is totally up to u, i mean using it just to store files or actually put an website there. And web hosts with large amount of storage space are expensive.

Donate because you appreciate OS and would like to give an helping hand in keeping the site running. Keep in mind that all these awesome improvements to the site, the vast amount of anime and the increasing community all take up bandwidth and servers which in return costs money every month.
Noone will ever force you to donate, but lets assume (god-willing it won't ever happen) that there is no donations then the bills will still need to be paid, and though we have great admins we can't expect them to pour not only their free-time into the site but also their hard earned cash.

The risk is really low, besides banks at least all that I know off covers losses you might obtain from being hacked.
There is always risks of being hacked but chances are so low, and the security not just on Internet banks, but also sites like Paypal is really good as to avoided hackings and make people feel secure about using their services.
The greatest risk is actually posed by your trash, people tend to just trash any papers from banks etc. which can easily be used for fraud and cleaning out your account.

Donation is the bread and butter of this site. It helps the site so that it will run properly. We do not have any advertisement here so the site is just working with donations. If we do not have donators in this site, it will be closed sooner or later. Thanks donators especially cabale.

WOW ... cant believe I never saw this thread before, its almost a troll ...

let me see ...

We have to store our anime on a host server, none of us have those huge, massive monsters that can support so many people logging in at the same time. That said host, the host should also be able to have enough bandwidth to allow a min of 2000 odd people streaming at the same time (at peak - this can go upto about 5000).

Now just imagine even 2 or three people in your home using the same computer and same net connection at the same time and you can just begin to understand the size and the host we need to rent to be able to handle the traffic

Now add the space we need to save the 30,000 videos, 100,000 more threads, pictures, etc we need to store and then you will realise why we need to rent an external host.

A dedicated host for such a size as OS cost anywhere from $500 - $10,000 a month, so the fact we survive with such a little is a testimony to Jim's ability as a programmer and a magician. We also need a premium account in Megaupload, and seperate video hosts to share the load of vids and back up OS as none of us have HD space to back up OS everymonth anymore. Its just too big.

Believe me when I tell you - for the 1st year of OS existence - we never made enough for our server bills, and all 3 of us chipped in our own money to keep this going. Even now, we sometimes have to have wait for the last min to pay our bill because we are behind in our collection. We have never taken any of the money we collect for our own uses and if ever we make a little more than we need, its put aside for the months when we dont make what we need and believe me - there are many

So while yes, you so not HAVE to donate, eventually we will have to grow and its now at a point that even if all three of us - Jim, Chiva and I combined contribute, we could not afford to meet the cost, and therefore we could not survive, and therefore we would be forced to close shop.

That - sadly, is the reality of economics!!
