View Full Version : Chatbox and Shoutbox

Like many other users, I use both the chatbox and the shoutbox at the same time. Though it is awesome that you can activate the chatbox whilst streaming a video, it is weird in a way that that is the only way where you can get both the chatbox and the shoutbox to be on the same page.
What I am suggesting that other than streaming an episode, the chat and the shoutbox should be together under "Community". The "Community" tab drop-down only has chatbox, and apart from the large chatbox, it is rather empty and still has room to fit a shoutbox.
Here is an image that I have created to illustrate my idea better.

LOOOL good job dab, that is really quite useful. We already have Chat Box when Streaming. And it would be a lot cooler if there is a Shout Box in the Chat Box Area. Double Chat on both Chat Box and Shout Box lol. And this is also quite useful for the Moderator to monitor both SB and CB at the same time. I'll definitely agree on this one.

Thanks sora. I'm not encouraging spam in this case. It's just that there are 2 different audiences/users in each box, and sometimes, certain users prefer to only stick to one box. This makes answering queries that people may put up in the shoutbox much easier since some people usually help out, but have reduced chance since they're usually at the chatbox instead

I like this idea. This would alleviate the need to have multiple browser windows open at once. Great suggestion, dab117!

Have you tried using Chrome Dual View app for Google Chrome?
http://www.chromeplugins.org/plugins/google-chrome-dual-view/
Here's a screenshot:

And for Firefox, you can use this add-on.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4287/
You can split your tab to two or more mini-tabs.
I can't provide any screenshot on how the add-on looks because I'm not using Firefox. :18:

Thanks for that Fepi, I didn't know that such an add-on existed. Still, the splitter would use up relatively higher internet traffic since they are 2 tabs nonetheless, and each tab refreshes differently. I think having the chat/shoutbox together is better though. Still, thanks for sharing =)

I'm not sure if its the same thing .... but the answer fepi gave is the same one in this thread long time ago xD

This idea is really amazing. This would be great for someone like me who chats at chat box and shout box at the same time. Anyway, that picture seems to be the scene yesterday at chat box when it was dead.

I think this suggestion is good idea. Some of the members here are not too computer literate and can't understand what is add-ons or plug-in.
I will just stick on this one.

I dont think its idea to start with because its already available : go open streaming page *Any streaming video* you will find the SB right of the video, in the settings you can put the CB below the video , that way you can :stream , Chat in the chatbox, shout in the shoutbox.
so the idea is already here long time ago but people dont know about it
also the addons for firefox and that page for Google Chrome is to help.
problem solved.

First off "OMG ITS A POST BY DAB OMG FANGIRL"
k I'm done... I think its a very valid idea and conceptually wise. I don't know why but when I'm chatting on OS using shoutbox or chatbox, and I play WoW, my laptop gets hot depending on how many pages I have open in order to use them both. Once I close them, my laptop cools down almost instantly. I think it's probably just because of how they refresh constantly and how it affects firefoxes usage on my computer (same would happen on IE so switching browsers wouldn't help). It's possible that if they were both on the same page, it'd be a lot easier on my laptop, and hey, it'd save me some serious tab space, because on any given day I have 5 or 6 OS tabs open (looking for anime, shoutbox, chatbox (if I'm in it which is rare but I want to get more into it), forums (multiple pages), and maybe viewing a persons profile.) Thats a lot to have open all at once.
Cheers to dab for the win suggestion.

Okay 1st of all sorry if some people will think this is a duplicated post but here for the people who doesn't read the 1st replys:
some solutions
1: You can put the Chatbox on the bottom of the streaming video from the settings.
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/6484/oscb.jpg
2: Use Google Chrome Dual View (http://www.chromeplugins.org/plugins/google-chrome-dual-view/) to split the tab into 2 its easier then your way.
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/9922/googlechromedualview.jpg
3: Use FireFox Splitter *addons* (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4287/) to split the tab into 2 or more.
(Since I only use Google Chrome and not FF I couldn't have a picture of this, if any mod who can edit this to add his own FF splitter picture its okay for me)
*This was from another thread that was posted at 12-26-2010 in the General Discussion section under the name Chat in CB and Stream at the same Time?! (http://otaku-streamers.com/community/showthread.php?6865-Chat-in-CB-and-Stream-at-the-same-Time-).*
this is why I thought this thread is kinda duplicated or have the same thought as that thread

This idea is different from the chat box the streaming page have and also different from the one being discuss at the general discussion. The one at the streaming page is on the bottom of the video and that chat box is inconvenient to use if you are watching a video at the same time. And the one at the general discussion is only using two browser where you can watch the video and used the chat box at the same time. Which make this one a different suggestion.
This suggestion is about using only one browser for the chat box and shout box at the same time. I do agree with dab on this one since that it would lessen the loading or whatever they call it of the page and also one browser at a time when you are not streaming at some time which happen to me.
And lastly, their are users who doesn't know about the add on and also those who don't want to download it which is again in my case I do not bother. And also, not all the user use Google Chrome as their browser which in my case I use Firefox.

as for FireFox there is addon called splitter , also for that there wont be any different since the only thing that keep loading in that page is the Chatbox and the Shoutbox so the only thing will make different is when you 1st open the pages, all the other is same.
sorry if I misunderstood anything.

Nah nah it's fine. But yep, my idea coincides with mlcdl (http://otaku-streamers.com/community/member.php?11574-mlcdl) and SushilovesNori (http://otaku-streamers.com/community/member.php?10214-SushilovesNori) 's point
Having 2 pages at once takes up more CPU power since both pages load differently. And having this implemented removes the need to go to a random video to have both the CB/SB together (which inevitably takes up even more Internet traffic as you have to stream, and continuously refresh both the CB/SB.

It's a great idea in my opinion, but (maybe I missed this) what happens if we got really laggy comps? If I could be allowed to just add one small tweak, make it an option in your profile to turn on and off or something... (again, if this was said, sorry, I must've missed it.) Because seriously, for me, SB and watching 1 anime while keeping another browser open crashes my laptop; the hard drive overheats and yea... lol
