Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni- I thought I would get nightmares, but this anime started my random need for blood and horror in media
Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei- "A teacher obsessed with suicide? Seriously?" was what I was thinking when I first saw this.
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu- Had it described by a friend. After her awkward description, I HAD to watch it.

Hahahaha well im glad im not the only one in the somthing wrong club ^_^
ARIA series...
At first i didn't like the Slice of Life genre, i thought it would be boring without all that action that Shounen has..
Then i watched Lucky Star, then Zetsubo Sensei, then Minami-ke...and i realized that Slice of Life can be relaxing sometimes...i found out about ARIA, tried it, really liked it....
Another one would be Gintama..
Ran out of Shounen to watch, read some comments saying that it's random and ridiculously funny..
I like random, i like ridiculous..
Watched it, liked it very much...
Higurashi too...
I watched Monster, Ghost Hunt, Elfen Lied, Blood+...all thrillers alike...
However, the difference in Higurashi is it's unique storyline...feels like the butterfly effect...I like butterfly effect...

Get Backers ---> I was just trying to fill in some time after finishing my research report and all of a sudden i found myself up at 2 in the morning finishing the series xP
Another would be..... Hajime No Ippo. I wasn't expecting it to be very interesting, but i got hooked and kept up the series even now in the second season. Although i still feel like i don't like it.... I just can't stop o.o

For me Spice and Wolf.. actually dropped it once somewhat half way through the first episode.. Later i thought ahh perhaps i were a bit to harsh and gave it another shot, luckily i might add, it opened my eyes for a new genre the more casual vibe as I named it myself ^^
Im so looking forward to the second season this year

I've had more experiences of the opposite... expecting it to be good, and dropping it after a few eps...
Hmmmm, okay - Orguss and Aura Battler Dunbine - I was not sure what to expect with either of these - I had the toys for these when they first came out, but was never able to get any eps until the recent full series box sets came out. I was hooked after 2 eps for both of these - absolutely fantastic anime!
I think Cowboy Beebop was like that too - had no clue what to expect (because of the title) - but it ended up being one of my favorite shows.

Really? I think there are some much better ones in that area than Elfen Lied.
I was a bit put off by all the blatant nudity.

So what did you truly like about it? Surely whatever you like about it, there are others that portray the same factor in a better way.
Enlighten me as to what you find so appealing in this violent show.
Don't take my inquisition personally, I just didn't see the greatness of Elfen Lied so I was surprised with your response.

Haha, well personally I probably won't be able to explain why I like it so much.
But I guess I love the violence. Even with some romance thrown in there.
It's hard to say what I truly liked about it but there's something that just kept me watching.

Ah, I see. I understand that feeling.
It's like how I like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star so much.
They both have so much I could whine and complain about, yet they were both somehow...so..so...so...so enticing.
Argh! Claws out patches of hair and rolls on floor not laughing*:16:

Oh right. Lucky Star was also the same for me.
I like it because of all the references that it makes. Even though they talk about nothing that's useful, it was still interesting since they sometimes talked about things that I though about too.
Like what's the difference between a cold and the flu.

Okay, first admittal as an otaku.
I was completely bored out of my mind as to what anime I should give my two cents (and chance) and started to watch Lucky Star. Incidentally, the opening did have me sing along after watching six episodes, so I was rather intriqued on how they took a girl otaku's lifestyle and put it into main life, unlike Geshiken.
There are times when I do sing the opening quite incidentally at work and do get a few stares as to why I'm singing a song that they have no clue on what it's about.

Stand proud! We shall eventually dominate the world.
Anyways, how do you sing some parts of the Lucky Star theme song? Do you skip those strange parts (example: Konata's sped up finger pointing part), or do you just improvise? :D It seems a bit difficult to do some of those fast parts without digital enhancements(?).
I found myself humming Code Geass's opening once at school once, and I discovered three new anime lovers (they recognized the song).

Lol, believe me, I intend to, age is of little bereavement when it comes to something you enjoy!
But as for the several theme songs I've been singing, I just remember them. Almost got in trouble for singing Red-Fraction by MELL. No offense to the religious, but someone of that particular side stepper reported me for saying a line of it if not promoting violence for some odd reason. (Lucky me that I got away with it.)

To be honest, I never thought I'd find myself watching series like Lucky Star and K-On. One day I just figured "what the hell, why not?" and watched Lucky Star. I laughed through the whole series and actually found out I loved the genre.

Umineko No Naku Koro Ni -- never expected that gore anime will be able to twitch myself into liking it ;D and;
Basquash! -- can't believe myself that I'm actually watching a mecha-sport anime even though I'm really not a fan of those genres.

For me, the most notable anime that I unexpectedly liked was Clannad. After hearing people go on and on and on about it at conventions and online I was really put off from trying it. Then I watched and loved Air so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did! In my opinion, it's a very heartwarming story that distributes both the comedic and tear-jerking elements quite well. If only I could have liked Clannad: After Story half as much :/

The first time I watched Blue Gender back then I was puzzled to what it was about. but after the monsters showed up and ya know killed people I was drawn to the violence very much that I ended up watching the entire series.
It wasn't so bad though, it kinda felt like watching Evangelion.

I should say..
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu -- for around 3 episodes I was really confused because I have watched the "Next episode" thing and as I view the next episode.. it wasn't the one which I view in the "Next episode" from the previous episode.. XDDDD AND somehow.. because of it, I was intruged. Then Lately I didn't realize that I was looking for the next episodes of it.
AND
Angel Beats! -- because at the first few episode, I thought it was another same story anime. BUT IT WASN'T~!!
I could say that first impression never last.. XDDD

For me, it was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan. At first i was like wtf an anime about digging holes? then i wasnt really impressed by the mechs but it really grew on me and became the most epic anime i ever seen. For me i was hooked around ep 6-8. you'll see why.
the other one is one piece. well for one piece in the beginning it was kinda of slow and seemed too childish but after the arlong arc it really got good. another epic anime.
My third one would be capeta, it starts off slow but later on it really connected emotionally.

Most of all, this what happens to me when i watch animes. But the one that really interested me are those mecha genre animes like gundam, code geass, stardriver kagayaki no takuto and most of all kurogane linebarrels. The time i watched kurogane no linebarrels, i could'nt get off my seat over it. I always say this episode would be the last one tonight. I guess that is what we call the Last Episode Syndrome. lol.
PS: Clannad also interested me, coz of the emotions maybe?

The first thing that comes to mind for me is "ef: a tale of melodies". Not to be confused with "ef: a tale of memories." which I haven't seen yet but I will sometime.
Melodies was artistically unique, hard to predict, amusing and trivial but then WHAM HEAVY STUFF. If you get through 7 out of 12 and haven't become addicted after some of the dramatic reveals, you have no soul.
That's an exaggeration but you get the point.

Me? hehe... I unexpectedly loved yaoi especially Junjou Romantica... I love genres like psychological, gore, and plots with unexpected twists and cliff-hangers... Before I loved romance anime but I was bored with it... then I accidentaly saw junjou using the "surprise me" button... at first I was like, "Yaoi? Meh... I'm never gonna watch those... It gives me the goosebumps... just thinking how it would go..." but as an oppen-minded otaku... I wanna try a variety of genre... and so it suddenly turned me into a yaoi fangirl... haha... That's probably because I was bored one day, and was looking through my On Demand menu on my TV, and those 3 shows were there, so out of boredom I clicked Maria † Holic, and got addicted, then since I ran out of episodes of that on my On Demand, I moved to To Love-Ru, and then again to Bleach. There are probably a bunch anime that I unexpectedly liked but I can specifically name one: Bleach!
I just wanted to start watching series of a show (didn't start watching anime yet) and i came across Bleach so I was like okay i'll watch this just because i want to start following episodes of a series. then i started liking it more and more (and then less and less when the fillers began lol)
so bleach was my first unexpected like

For me it was Clannad. I was thinking that it was just another high school harem anime until I started crying after a few episodes. :D

High school of the Dead and Rosario+Vampire i expected to be complete, over-rated echii-fests, but when i saw them i became hooked. same thing with Chobits. Oh, and Samurai Champloo. I thought it was over-hyped,especially by my friends, but when i saw it I realized it really was good. Lastly, Eden of the East

Naruto.
In 2004, my best friend gave me 100+ episodes on DVD that I let collect dust on my desk because I wasn't interested in reading subtitles.
I finally got around to watching it, pulled an all nighter and haven't looked back since! :bingo:
