Rourini Kenshin A.K.A. Hitokiri Battousai is by far no.1 amongst all, for the soul reason; he resembles the closest to being the most realistic swordsman ever made in anime. no special powers that sends spirit waves, no getsuga tenshou and sh*t. just a plain old sword perfectly wielded by a perfectly honed samurai.

"Amakikirou Rehiouno Hirimeki" dont know the exact spelling but that was by far his strongest move as far as i could remember. it definitely owns getsuga tenshou.(by name) lol.

A swordsman is someone who is skilled in the use of swords and not someone who just wield a sword for decoration or just uses it as projectile weapon. Since I haven't seen all animes yet Kenshin Himura is the best for now. I'd prefer power over technique myself, what good is to block you opponent's incoming blow, when your sword is about to be broken (along with the rest of your body). So my pick is:

Swordsman: Guts from Berseker
Swordswoman: Karura from Utawarerumono

Both of them wield swords that are too heavy for anyone else, their edge is too blunt to actually cut, so they don't bother resharpening, and they can do a great deal of smashing not to mention the amount of punishment they (both wielder and sword) can take and not even flinch.
