Ok I have seen some holes in this and wanted to discuss, when L dies he is killed by Rem, what I don't understand is why Rem didn't tell Light L's real name and have him call Misa and have her kill L? it would spare Rem being killed off, why did she act to save Misa instead of just getting her to do it.

Maybe because, Misa used the shinigami eyes and had her lifespan down to half. Because of this, Rem probably wanted Misa to live longer... So he gave up his lifespan to her by saving her from L.

Maybe because Light is just being careful, he didn't want to have a conversation with Rem especially L and the gang are making a close observation to the shinigami. And Light just couldn't risk having Misa do the job since she's also being watched, the safest thing to do without being suspected is have Rem himself kill off L. That's what I think...

i agree with lunic, misa traded her lifespan 2x for having a shinigami eyes, maybe that's one of the reason why rem didn't hesitate to kill L with it's own hands
L must die because he is getting in Light's way in creating his new world :) that's what i think

L must die for the goal of Light he wouldn't stop just so that L wouldn't die it had to be done and yeah rem died for the sake of misa
