Why wont people use their real name in-game?

ok i visited my friend's house yesterday and i was shocked when i see his father playing Diablo II LOL using his REAL NAME ZOMG!!!

his character was an amazon named "Ramon2524"

i mean when i play DOTA or any MMOs the use cool and sometimes corny names (some kids do this LOL)


i cant believe it LOL'd so bad my stomach hurt so much

My name is not that common but the reason why we choose different names comes in different reasons...some do it to make you laugh...I have quite a few friends who are like that...some do it because they idolize whoever their username is and also because it also gains you attention :3

Maybe for Security reasons? Nah. Or maybe because they were already taken-- or something. I don't use my real name in games because I think It's not pretty and I still prefer keeping my name a secret or something. Well, most people use theirs as a username because they are pretty-- or maybe because they think it's nice. Well I'm not really sure. I haven't used my real name as any username before.

Cause a persons name isn't that uniques as they say it is....

that's why games especially Online games....

have filters that doesn't allow you to have the same name as another player...

cause there would be problems concerning private messages.... XP

Definitely for Security and Privacy reasons. Now days people will look you up on Facebook. That's just a hassle. Also you get the chance to be unique or have a name that fits your character.

In a fixed RPG... sometimes gamers play the game to enjoy the story... so they use the original character's name instead of their own...

Unlike the unsuspecting addict who puts in his name and feels like he's in the game, and not the original character...

And for other RPG's where you decide your own name without having a default one... I tend to put my nickname rather than my name...

I tend to have different names just because it makes me think of new ones. Plus, its almost nickname-ish. As opposed to a large number of people calling me by my real name who I don't know, they're stuck with the name I have online. So yeah, I'm a paranoid.

Well for me it is so I can use one name across the board, it does cause some funny moments when an admin who recognizes the name insta bans me, but hell its fun to have people go "Hey I know that a**h***!"

Well honestly, whenever I try out an online game. I always create a female character despite me as being a male. I'm not gay or anything. I just love to ogle at female bodies. Especially the oppai. Well perversion aside, imagine me naming my female character my real name. Wouldn't that be insane? It's like me having surgery and going from male to female. Creepy. So I rather name my female character a somewhat feminine name. Derive from anime or personal codename. Rumic is my first codename, which is somewhat masculine. But I have another codename which is used in real life. Some of my friends call me Megs. I don't know if its a balance male and female name but I love it anyway. By the way, Megs is short for Omega. On which Omega is the original codename I normally go for. For unknown reason my best friend shorten it. But I like it anyway. ^^

So I use Megs instead of Omega. Which is quite cool whenever I create a character. Male or female (I rather go for female. Oppai desu! ^^) And besides my real name is somewhat long. But not that long which consists of 2 other names. Anyway that is my own opinion.

Hmm, I'm from the Philippines and alot of people especially hardcore gamers well not all, are somewhat trashtalkers and they may tend to over react to noobs and take it to the next level like Facebook or other Social Networking Sites that's why it's hard to use your real name.

This is based on observation. Not generalizing anyone or the Filipino gamers :D

Names are common and would be already taken by someone even if you wanted to use them as they are, and some people like me don't like numbers or any other characters in their username like Michael123 or xXxMichaelxXx. I always want the first letter capital and the rest lowercase like a name should be.

And besides I like role playing so I give my character a name that has a nice ring to it.

i dont use my real info when registering in a game (except when prompted), mainly to protect my identity, and now with the string of hackers trying to hack companies (and succeeded in some) you can never be too careful with your security.

Most of the times I would use my first name, I find it having a nice ring to it, it's quite uncommon, especially outside my country, so most of the times it's not taken and there's not much of a security risk without a surname to it (I think).
Still I am never satisfied with just one character per game, and beeing a hardcore Role Player, I like to get creative sometimes. A good codename, apart from beeing a source of self-gratification, can also help one's RP quite alot, I remember when playing Neverwinter Nights on the net, I made a golden dwarven clockwork automaton character once on a custom server and named him "Mithrillheart Integrated Defence Automaton System v7.7beta" (M.I.D.A.S. or Midas for short), or my potion trader who was named "Al Cool the Spirits Smuggler".
