View Full Version : Prohibit One-Liners in the Forum

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed that a significant number of posts made in these forums are one-liners. And I hope I'm not the only one who finds them annoying.

In my opinion, one-liners do absolutely nothing for the topic being discussed, and quite often set of a stream of consecutive one-line posts. They don't really contribute anything to whatever topic is being discussed. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if one-liners were the primary reason people have so many posts to their name.

I would like for there to be a rule prohibiting one-liners in the Forum. Such a rule will force people to think a little longer about what they wish to say before they post, while will improve the overall quality of the Forum. No longer will people be able to clump "yes" or "no" with a bunch of exclamation points and emoticons and click Submit Post. We might actually start seeing some thought-provoking responses in the Forum.

Several other prominent anime-related websites with extensive forums have rules similar to the one I am proposing, and all of those forums run smoothly. I can't see why OS shouldn't adopt precedents set by other websites if it means an aspect of OS will improve.

Agree? Disagree? I would very much like to hear everyone's thoughts on the issue.

Yes, I have to agree to this one so much that this suggestion just might be taken in effect.

As a poster, I'm a bit annoyed about these one-liners. Even the ones that I've made in the past are some that gets me annoyed.
Comments like 'I agree' are just plain irrational to the threads and I'm sure that those are the ones that gives the mods a hard time.

Though I'm sure that the forum games will be an exception.

Actually there is a rule - contribute towards the conversation or refrain. Sadly I gave up a long time ago trying to implement that. Fortunately we now have a whole bunch of new mods more than willing to enforce the rules :16:

True, I also have to agree, but somehow that depends on the Thread Question you see.

For example : Whats is your Favorite Anime Character~?
answer : Definitely Lelouch Vi Britannia from Code Geass. because of his coolness. So I chose him.

The Thread Question tells/talks about your Favorite Anime Character, the Thread Question didn't tell us to described why we choose this/that as our favorite Anime Character. And also Common Sense is necessary.

And yes, I truly agree on your suggestion. I also saw many members with annoying comments like that on some threads.

@Sora: There is a way to remedy the type of situation you mentioned. However, this involves having moderators approve each new thread before it's listed which I don't know is even feasible. I know of many other forums that operate this way, but I don't know what sort of additional work this entails on the moderators. Doing things this way (i.e. having to wait for approval) was going to be my second suggestion if my first was well received as I feel the two go hand-in-hand.

For example, threads that just require you to state who you favorite character is would not be approved. Threads requiring that you state who you favorite character is with reasons and examples for why he/she is your favorite character would be approved. Having to get approval from a moderator would certainly cut down on a lot of pointless threads. It might also serve to stimulate the Forum goers into thinking in ways they never considered before. To illustrate that point I'll continue with my example: I know that I would certainly be more interested in a character if I know more about him than just his name. If I'm interested in what I read about that character the most likely progression is that I will seek out the series and stream a few episodes to take a look.

I agree with your suggestion. This will help our moderators. It can be use to clean the forums. hehehe. But I think this rule will have some exceptions for some thread like using questions Poll threads(sometimes they will just tell who they voted for) or just like the question of sora. We will see the future of the forums of OS when this suggestion will be implemented and I think this will since the moderators agree *wow 4 moderators thanks this one*

I have the same thoughts on Snoozy on this one.

As one being concern here by sora, those thread can still be implemented with a limitation like explain why he became your fav. char, etc.

Anyway, this idea will be really great. As a thread starter as well, I am being annoyed with such irrational comments so their are times that I end up reporting them...but some of them is not considered spam so having this one implemented would lessen this problem sometimes I do have.

Being on discussion, this thread would explain the part sora is concern http://otaku-streamers.com/community/showthread.php?571-What-is-The-Best-Anime-Ever/

still this thread is still on the anime talk even without the proper discussion. The reason is the thread respect each other member opinion.

If you write too long then many will be like TL;DR

exactly, we can only presume that they will do it to higher their post counts and not really giving out information regardless of the topics. and this will eventually lead to a Spam. take the Polls for example. the Origin of Spams is from there, so the Higher Ups have no choice but to Create another Section for polls where post counts are disabled cause members just keep on dropping there and will just vote simply without giving any reasons why and will turn in to a spam.

We are currently implementing the rule that all posts must contribute to the conversation, and provide content. ... Thread Closed.
