Since we all love food so much I thought we should have a thread dedicated to our favorite recipes.

So please feel free to post your favorite food recipes, but try to keep it clean so it remain easy to navigate trough the recipes.
When it comes to talking about food in general there already is a food thread, which is where I got the idea for this thread after tasting Bindu's Pol Sambol (Thank you:3:)

Hmmm Sri Lanka has a lot of exotic food and our whole culture revolves around spices and eating. However most of the stuff cannot be done in another country - so here is something anyone can try (I have made it easy for newbie's)
Its called Chinese rolls although the Chinese had nothing to do with its development tho I suspect someone was trying to imitate Spring rolls
You start with flat pancakes or crepes
You mix a base batter with a half a cup of milk, 2 eggs and about 4 tablespoons of flour and salt to taste. The batter should be thin and flow easily. Pour into a small frying pan and cook till firm only on one side.
Make the base by cutting up a medium red onion, a few cloves of garlic and green chillies, salt and pepper to taste and fry with some olive oil until golden brown.
We add spices such as a pinch of tumeric and red chillie powder and curry powder as well as curry leaves, so if you wish to add any of your favourite available seasonings, go ahead
Add 1 cup of cooked and shredded chicken or tuna along with one medium size potato (pre-boiled and smashed) and stir well till its well cooked and comes away from the sides of the pan
Once the mixture is ready, make it into little fingers around 4" long and one wide. Place in the middle of a pancake (crepe) and wrap well.
Place a beaten egg in a small plate and loose bread crumbs in another (larger) plate.
Dip the roll in the egg and then toss it in the breadcrumbs.
Deep fry in olive oil and drain on paper to absorb the excess oil
Eat with chillie sauce
Enjoy!!!

Hmmm.... sounds good.

I can cook too but my recipes are all family secrets. Mostly Filipino cuisine like sinigang (pork stewed in tamarind broth with veggies), adobo (pork sauteed with soy sauce and vinegar), kare kare (beef boiled in peanut butter sauce with vegetables like banana blossoms & eggplant good with bagoong, the Filipino term for shrimp paste). Well... that's all for now.

Thanks :1:

I thought I would post the recipe for Pol Sambol (literally meaning Coconut salad) which is in mine (an millions of other's) minds, as the best food in the whole world!! All of the ingredients can be found in an Indian or Sri Lankan food market which are now found almost anywhere in the world.

Take one large onion, one green chillie and one small clove of garlic and cut as finely as possible
If finely ground dried fish is available, add a teaspoon of this as well. (but if you dont, it wont spoil the taste, so dont worry) If you have a dry grinder, you can grind it all the ingredients together for a few seconds, but otherwise fine chopping will do.
Then add this to a heaped cup of freshly ground coconut along with ground dry red chillie powder and enough salt and pepper to taste(actually a wee drop more salt that you would normally take is also okay). If you dont have freshly ground coconut, then normal ground coconut will do.

Mix it well with your fingers (need I say - wash your fingers well first :4:). and its now ready to eat.

Remember, its very spicy and just a little goes along way. Its best eaten with rice and curry or even plain white rice or bread and butter.

For those who try it ... you will get addicted. Its the most amazing food ever created!!!

Hey try this the next time you want stew. First cook some pieces of beef or a couple of pcs of chicken legs or thighs along with onions, garlic, spices and salt and pepper. When this is half done, add the vegetables and beans. Close it tightly and simmer on a very low flame. The meat broth flavour will get into the vegetables and it will be delicious.

Hmmm.... This one's not a famly recipe so I guess its free to share. It's my favorite in breakfast. They call it french toast at home but I'm not really sure, I call it fried bread (lol).

Well first you soak loaf bread in a mixture of egg and milk until the bread absorbs teh mixture. Then heat a frying pan and add butter. When the butter has melted, place the bread over the pan and fry until it's golden brown. Hehehe... Who has a recipe for Fried Ice Cream! I really want it bad! Hehehehe...

Anyone tried Chicken Tikka? (It's Chicken Curry)

Well, heres the recipe (Serves for 4): 3 large chicken fillets, 4 tablespoons of plain yogurt (coconut milk works fine as well), 1/2 teaspoon RED chilli powder (For extra spice), 2 teaspoon cooking oil, and of course, Curry Powder

1. Cut each chicken fillet to equal sized chunks (Not to big, not to small) ~ Wash and drain afterwards.

2. Place all remaining ingredients in a bowl and mix (Make sure all the pieces are well coated with yogurt) ~

3. Refrigerate for 4-6 hrs (cover the bowl)

4. Watch some Anime in Otaku-Streamers.com

5. Preheat oven to maximum temperature (I hear a stove works as well)

6. Place your chicken pieces and bake for 7-8 minutes

7. Add vegetables if you like

Hmm... well, teh thread sounded interesting and I googled some romanian recipes since I was too lasy to type them down ~_~

http://www.roembus.org/english/communities/copii/romanian_recipes.htm

Those are traditional romanian recipes and present at most holidays, not only Chirstmas (the site theme makes it look kinda merry lol XDDD). I read them myself and they're good (a bit simplified MAYBE) , same way my mom and grandmother made them... I think >.>" am not so fond of teh kitchen unless I cook for myself and usually I don't have to ~_~"

P.S.: the second goes well with the third ^_^

Ah this is my kind of thread, I love cooking especially trying out new recipes and creating unique ones from random stuff in the fridge.

With that in mind I'll share on of my discoveries when I had pasta and no pasta sauce in the house.

Any kind of pasta will do, though I prefer Capelli 'Angello (Angel Hair Pasta)
first cook the pasta (time will vary depending on thickness) Angel Hair cooks quickly since it is very think about 3-5 minutes in boiling water.
Be careful not to overcook, the pasta should be soft but firm.
Drain and set the pasta aside. (Tip, you can rinse with cold water to keep it from sticking though I prefer to mix in a little oil or margarine as rinsing removes starch)

Now it's time for a look in the fridge...

If you are lucky to have pasta sauce - Huzzah! If not time for some innovation.
Let's say one has Yellow mustard, margarine, a carrot, celery, maybe an orange and for simplicity a jar of green olives.

Any vegetables one finds cut either julienne or matchsticks... uhm, just little pieces
If you have an onion lying around chop one of those up too.

Now in a large sauce pan add some oil or a table spoon of margarine/butter put on stove and heat over medium just to get temp of oil up.

So now you add your chopped vegs, as there many different types you can add, here is a handy order:

1. Onions and Garlic - always first to give the oil flavour (brown lightly before adding other veg)
2. Hard vegs - carrots, beets, daikon - the harder the veg try to cut thinner and smaller for faster cooking.
3. regular veg - celery, olives, broccoli, cabbage (cut thin strips not leafy chunks)

Now mix and cook all those wonderful veg together, it should be smelling good.
if you have some salt and pepper time for some seasoning, usually a 1/4 teaspoon salt is good but one may need more depending on amount of veg and how much cabbage you used :)

The veg mix should be looking fairly dry which is good, if anything is getting burned the heat is too high.

start adding the pasta and pour on some mustard about 2-3 table spoons, just enough to lightly coat the pasta.

Lower the heat and mix well... et voila! a relatively healthy and nutritious meal.

Experiment a bit with different veg and you get interesting food. If your feeling classy try using Dijon mustard or the grainy kind to give new flavours.

Oops and I almost forgot, you can squeeze a it juice from an orange onto the finished pasta for an extra zing.... weird I know but it works.

here's my recipe for fresh tomato salsa
4 medium size tomatoes chopped
1/4 onion chopped
1-2 garlic cloves finely chopped
1/2 - 1 tbsp. lemon or lime juice
1-2 tbsp. cilantro chopped
fresh or dried chilies add to taste
pepper
1/2 tbsp of salt (seems like a lot but the tomatoes really soaks it up) so adjust to taste
olive oil (enough to lightly coat the whole mixture

mix everything together and let sit for about an hour or until the tomato water comes out. This is just a general guide as I find that most people have different preferences when it comes to garlic, onion etc. so keep tasting and adjusting until it's good for you.

Here are three of my favorite things to make myself:

1) Sweet Snack dip: Mix 1 part cottage cheese with 2 parts cream cheese, beat together with a fork and add honey generously to taste. Dip in fresh cut fruits and veggies, like apples, celery, carrots, bell pepper or put the dip on top of strawberries or avocado... delicious.

2) Basically, a s'more : make a sandwich of 2 pieces of any kind of cracker, hard bread or cookie (graham cracker is traditional but not the only option) and put chocolate, peanut butter, and banana slices in the middle. Marshmallows can be replaced by bananas and it tastes quite the same! Pop in the microwave for a handful of seconds to make it warm and mushy if you want-- so good.

3) WATERMELON JUICE -- do this the next possible time you can, so worth it. Cut up a watermelon, blend/puree it into a liquid, then strain it and pour it into a glass to drink. The most refreshing thing EVARR. SO simple and so good! If you have the desire to be fancy, include coconut juice, or mint tea, or... you can try anything. I love blending whatever fruits and vegetables I've got around the house, straining out what's not juice and drinking it. Now that's a tasty drink, and far better than coke. That reminds me, you can pour in sparkling water or sprite into nearly any juice you make to make it soda-like.
