I think one weekend when I was in middle school I saw an ep of DBZ and didn't know what the hell it was because it was different from all the other shows I would watch.

So a random ep of DBZ was technically the first anime I watched. That and some Pokemon. The first full SERIES I watched was Evangelion. It's like going from a foot in the shallow end of a pool to jumping into the ocean after a storm.
