You realize 8GB of RAM is utterly pointless at this point right? People and their epeens. i7 is still faster than the x6 btw. Just a heads up.
Mines enough to do what I want, but not a super computer....
Win7 pro x64
4g ddr2 1066
Core2 duo 8400 @ 4.0ghz
EVGA GTX 480
4 tb storage (I have a lot of anime, movies and music)
Cooler Master CM690
oh and an old 80g WD raptor for a boot drive. (its seriously like 9 years old) lol
We'll just call this the "show me your epeen" thread =p

Haha, yeah 8 GB is a bit much, though i want to build my computer to such a level where i don't need to worry that much about lack of machinepower. About the i7, yeah it is faster, but also ALOT more expensive than the AMD versions ^_^

The transition from 32 bit to 64 bit and higher will be slow. by the time most systems are designed for 64 memory would be much cheaper than it is now
The only game I play time to time is Guildwars and maybe I will get Portal 2 if its for the PC
I generally need it for my studies in Computer/Electrical Engineering so I need the processing power

Vista/Windows 7 64bit can handle up to 8gb or RAM

8 GB RAM
AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core (w/ nautilus 500 liquid cooling)

Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 Its feeding 22" and 19" monitors.

Upgrading early next year.
Answering the first post. 8 gb is not much if your running a 64bit OS windows 7.
Vista/Windows 7 64bit can handle up to 8gb or RAM
8GB of RAM is fairly good...I have that much and I have no problems even while gaming.
32bit Windows can only take up to 4GB of RAM, while 64bit can handle up to 24GB of RAM. I dont think XP will support a lot either...not sure on its numbers.

My laptop I'm currently using is about 4-5 years old, so the specs aren't that great by today's standards, but here goes:
OS
Windows Vista Home Premium
Processor
AMD Turion 64 x2(2 core) ~2.0GHz
Memory
4GB DDR
HDD
Sadly, only a 250GB HDD, but 2 1TB external.
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce 715M / nForce 630M, Approx. total dedicated memory ~1GB
Other than that, the usual built in webcam/mic
Not a bad laptop, but hardly top of the line anymore either.

No, the stock speed is 3.4 so overclocked it to 3.8.. I can bring it up to 4.0Ghz but can't seem to get the right voltage settings so it won't crash on stress test. H50 is really helping a lot.
As for the cost for everything, I think around 50-60K, I forgot how much exactly. What an investment but worth it :D

just bought a new laptop recently
the Dell XPS 17 that came out recently
2nd Gen i7-2630QM
Windows 7 Professional 64 (free from MSDN AA :D)
8 GB DDR3 (2 DIMM)
Nivida Geforce GT 555M (3 GB dedicated, 3D movies and games FTW)
1 TB Drive (500 GB x2, annoying when transferring data from one HDD to the other though)
The graphics card is having trouble with DX11 games though. Nivida still hasn't released support for it since its still new so I'm going to have to wait it out.
