JAVA is starting to become more and more in demand in the software engineering field
My university requires us to use only JAVA for all our software classes

Hmm java is easier to play with but as far as i'm concerned C/C++ is superior, but that was long ago when i used them, i dont know how much any of them evolved recently.

dunno how much but if I remember correctly you use C# (which came from C) in some game engine programming >.< and if I remember correctly some scripts in those game engines use c? I'm not sure...

Java can be used not just for PC applications, it is also cross platform, can be used for cellphone apps and you friggin don't need add ons to use STRING VARIABLES!

Java is not cleaner than C/C++, Java is an interpreted language where as C/C++ is native. Each has its benefits however.

Kobowo

java is more complex
Nope C++ is more complex....I've started learning java and actually I found it easier to understand...and its actually easier on some parts than C++ or even C#....well I still prefer c++ because I got used to declaring variables there...

I learned C++ first and then Java. I find Java to be limited as I can't use pointers like in C++. Also, I feel comfortable to have my functions in a separate header files.

Master C, most languages are derived from it. Once you're good at C, it's quite easy to transition into a different language.

I don't understand a thing of any of those two, but there was a math competition I once went to and everyone got sorted among four clasess: A, B, C... and C++ XD

C++, Java is a cinch to learn since OOP and predefined data structures make it easy to use.
However, it depends on what you want to write. Scripts and apps are easily written with Java. However you'll find that some of the biggest companies don't care for Java as much as they care for C/C++ knowledge. If you have strong C/C++ skills, you will find a job very quickly in the computing and microelectronics industry!

for me i would choose java..
because most of the time the employer is searching for a java prog.
but i would prepare java, because that's one of my PL specialty.

I never liked C Language. And I had fun studying Java. But among the Programming Languages I know, Assembly Language is my favorite. It's complicated that's why I like it.

imo, Java is quite horrible as a language, but because of the fact that everyone uses it makes it versatile, even though its object oriented-ness made it a huge entangled mess....
C/C++ is damn fast. Otherwise it's not user friendly at all, being a lower-level language. It's only step higher than assembly. But neither is Java friendlier. The syntax of the BufferedReader is just hurr (go Python!!)

i think java is the simplified and more user friendly version of turbo c++...if you have no problems with c for sure you'll have java as a piece of cake... thou i like c++ more coz it's the first language that made me think that in programming everything is possible and it had given me thrills to know the codes and its uses... :) hmmm now it made me think back on how i enjoyed that prog language before hope i still remember all the codes...nyahahaha.. :D

I say C++
It's harder to tell in java when you commit code mistake.. but there is this netbeans now..
But I still go for C since I find it comfortable to program games there :)

Surprised C# isn't an option here lol I spent a year on work placement with Java, I can honestly say I missed C# so much lol
When I went back to uni tho... guess what they made me do... more java -_- Java is very similar to C# though, it's just little things..
Well the upside of using java is that you can make android apps using it, the only other skills you might want are in xml
@yasatsuna
For java, Eclipse is the way to go.
P.S. Eclipse has an android plugin
