As promised, the newly formed coalition of Japanese and US manga publishers has indicated it is pursuing legal action against major manga piracy and scanlation sites in defence of its copyrights.

The Digital Comic Association, a Japanese publisher group supposedly formed to promote digital sales but fast turning into the manga equivalent of the RIAA, has partnered with 4 top English language publishers to tackle a short-list of 30 problem sites.

Starting with the US sites, those who ignore legal warnings will be sued for damages and subjected to criminal charges where appropriate.

With the sites in question maintaining substantial server presences in the US (although at least one major network is managed by a shady Chinese company), it does not seem likely publishers will have much trouble shutting them down.

Publishers may be in for a rude awakening once they have taken down the major offenders ? in lieu of a proper legal online alternative, a rush of freeloading manga fans to even more robust torrent sites seems the likely response, not a sudden rush to bookshops as publishers rather naively seem to hope.

As stated we'll just see a lot of torrents or manga-hosting-sites placed in countries that really doesn't bother with copyright laws.

Try looking at the legal responses at "thepiratebay"... They always cracks me open :P

Not the near future though, since anime DVD sales keep going up, whereas Manga sales keep going down, thus, this reaction.

o.o.. this is what happens when accountants get in control of a freaking company. Don't they realize that a number of people don't even buy the damn book, they just read it in the store. which is not illegal in anyway =o.

I'm tired complaining over this entire situation... If what they say is illegal then theres no point in trying to stop them.

If we truly respect our manga and it's creators then this 'might' be the best approach for them to take.
Besides we should be lucky that their only targeting illegal manga sites, If they happen to take streaming anime in account then WE'RE ALL SCREWED!!!!

As much as I hate to say it but as long as anime is out of the situation then they can take away all the manga titles they like...

~ I'll miss you OneManga and MangaFox

I'ill bet that for every site they shut down, 10 new ways of sharing manga will come to be.

But tbh, this is the less profitable solution they could take.

many companies are licensing anime for streaming on sites like crunchyroll, so maybe translated manga can get licensed for online viewing as well? That way it would be legal, and we wouldn't have to wait for hard copies to be released in other countries.

tfioi
06-27-2010, 05:24 PM
Yeah it would be nice, but atm i don't see that happening since i get the feeling that they are doing this just for cash....and well licensed anime doesn't really pay off for the authors so manga would even pay off less

BrokenAngel

Seems like all they're accomplishing is just making it slightly more difficult to find manga online.

Ohh so sad.
I'll be so bored again...
I'll miss those manga that I'm reading and I'll be reading...

as if it was difficult to find in the first place. Sites can just move their stuff and make changes like how onemanga has 1000 manga now so im sure many sites will do that if they get hit

All of this was inevitable as reproducing Manga like Onemanga / Mangafox does is not the most legal thing in the world. We have all just got to hope that the Legal alternatives are up to scratch. Personally if its legal I think that can only be a good thing but its got to be good yes Crunchyroll is legal but some of the subbing sucks!

There is a Legal manga site on the way and Im just hoping that its going to be good quality and free / paid for through advertisements on the site. oh and all though the site is not up and running yet there is some info on it at its domain http://openmanga.org/

They will aim mainly at the Japanese sites that host manga. It will be awhile until they start going international. Moving the offensive to the international is always extremely difficult for any country.
Their main concern is profits. Banning sites that host translated manga barely affect their profits.
Its not like we will go out and buy Japanese manga so theres no real worry for us at the moment.
Its impossible to stop though, torrents, irc, emule, theres tons of ways to spread manga.
The main worry for me is that this will spread to anime streaming. Streaming sites can be easily found and we will have to revert back to the dark ages of torrents and emule.

eh?! Mangas here in my country, costs a lot, (well that is for me, we're just poor) So, meaning, my chances of buying mangas are rare, then torrents huh.. I don't know how to do it xD Free mangas ftw.. I wonder if they'll attack anime next. no way!

They can't do anything about that. They can, however, do something about another way people are reading manga for free. i.e. Manga sites. Here's a scenario for example: It's as if one person buys a manga and then lets a thousand people read over his shoulder so they don't have to buy it. There goes a thousand sales for the price of one. Which is more harmful? The people who come in and read it, but don't buy it? Or the people who buy it and then put it online so that anyone and everyone can read it for free? I don't know about anyone else, but I'd personally feel more inclined to sit at home and read something than go down to the book store to read it.

It is cause for us otaku, manga is one part of entertainment

oh please. we all know anime and manga fans in our own respective countries. The one's that are willing to buy have and are always willing to buy, and prefer to buy; the one's that don't will never- myself included. We're just going to end up finding more creative ways to share.

This is the issue though, these companies don't seem to understand that free online manga doesn't really harm the business, rather it makes a larger fan-base and in fact encourages real buyers. They are looking at it objectively while counting the numbers of a prospective that never existed to begin with. Sales will not increase due to this, if they do, it would be very slight and even then, sales would eventually decrease as the fan-base dwindles.
