Power corrupts...

They say that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely (actually not sure who 'they' are... probably hippies). Anyway if you were to have absolute power, do you think you would succumb to the temptation to use it for your own benefit?

So the question I pose is if you were given power, honestly in what way do you think it would corrupt you? Or how would you start using it for your own benefit instead of for the greater good?

Hmm, as for myself... with absolute power I would make life weird and confusing for everyone else for my own amusement. For example every Wednesday a platoon of condom wielding baboons would be dropped into a random major shopping mall to do battle with a squad of spider monkeys equipped with cans of cheez whiz - and it will coincide with a 70% off sale at the GAP and Banana Republic.
Every other month will change the colour of water flowing through pipes (with green for March of course). Then every Monday give free smoothies to everyone who draws smiley faces on their foreheads with permanent markers, lifetime supply if it's a tattoo of course... uhm, what was my point again... oh yeah!

So anyway, how do you think you'd be corrupted by absolute power ?

If I had infinite power, I would probably do something similar to what Light did in Death Note.
After I finished that, then I would go have some fun (ie: get rid of a certain Algebra 2 teacher...)

Once I finish off the math teacher, then I'd get my dean; get rid of that mean kid in my chemistry class, get rid of that arrogant girl in my history class...

...oh man, good thing I don't have that kind of power. The world would be doomed with me in charge.:emhh40:

I would use my power to force everyone to stop war. Just to throw the world off-balace i'll make everything free, and you need to work to get something (i.e. go to a restaurant, wash your own dishes). I would then kill every major political power in the world and demand that we start working towards a more imbalanced future :D. Of course there'd still be casual friday

Absolute power hold the highest probability of corrupting oneself while having such. It means having a power greater than anything any person can encounter. Insanity or various impossibilities in the workings of the mind could actually be caused by absolute power.

For instance, if I could probably make everyone live peacefully by erasing their bad manners, de-corrupting them of any ill-will they have for others and to themselves, I might authorize myself to just vanish the existence of beings that will prove to be a threat to the unnatural peace I have created. And even if, originally, having the absolute power is intended to be used for the greater good, I might end up using it to control others' lives as I see fit and banish them into eternal void if they found to be hindering the continuation of my supposedly peaceful world all for what I believe is the greater good.

I have read once about a text that asks a person to think of this: if in this world everyone is given the right to actually kill any person they don't like, would you still be alive?

Though I think if I had ultimate power I would be more creative in punishments, actually that was one thing that annoyed me in Death note How they just use heart attacks and focus on the killing, it is why I really hated Light. He could create such colorful ways of people meeting their end... or even use it productively, how about write that they will use all their money to help the poor and then overdose on medication so their organs can be used for transplants. Or just have them laugh themselves to death Joker style. Evil and maniacal is great, but lacking imagination and humor is a crime punishable by... oh yeah

If someone pissed me off I would have them wear a suit that contained harnesses for 2 skunks and very large watermelon. Then drop them in the middle of a forest known for deer ticks and a resurgent bear population. I tell them to survive for 4 days while keeping the two skunks alive and the watermelon intact... if they succed they have appeased my anger.
If they fail but are still alive I would have them tied to a thousand ****roaches (use imagination of what they are tied too) and seal them in a cave full of bats for 2 days giving them an ample supply of water and food for themselves and the ****roaches. If they can keep at least half of the roaches alive after two days they get a cookie, if not they still get a cookie but it is filled with laxatives. The nearest washroom has all the toilet paper replaced with poison ivy and sandpaper... I wonder if I should seek professional help...

The question for me would be..with absolute power, could I not ensure that i escape my own demise? Could I not use that absolute power to ensure that I never go down the path that leads to negative things? The hardest part of having power is (in my humble opinion) that you are not an island unto yourself. Meaning that you are not alone .. and if you were .. what a sad place that would be. Your actions therefore affect others actions and a cycle begins. Given absolute power .. I suppose you might foresee or change the outcome to your choosing. But having that power .. could you not just choose to have infinite wisdom ( note i didnt say knowledge ) to choose the correct path ??

Ok well that is heading down an uber deep path reserved for psych classes or something. So the simple answer for me would be....umm to start i would allow myself the freedom to WATCH MORE ANIME !

But having the power to change yourself, would you want to change yourself or would you rather change the definition of good and evil to fit your desires?

If keeping out that mental stuff, I would use my power to:
Stop time and watch movies and anime
Change the seasons according my mood
Have a paintball gun war with around 250 vs 250 capture the flag style. It will take place in a dense forest and the flag would be in castle style buildings. Each team will have one chopper which can rapid fire paintballs guarding the castle.

Of course I would use it to my own benefit. What would be the point in having power if you didn't use it for your own gain. Sure, use it to benefit others and not only yourself. 1) Create a large transmutation circle, mainly in the middle of Asia, ranging up to China (Japan, not included so that they could continue creating more animes, ^^,). Then I would transmute all living things within it into a philosopher's stone and use it to make myself immortal.

2) Let the people eat only cotton candies, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

3) Re-edit the Bible, then write my name there as the savior.

As of corrupts me, i do think that if i have a competition with power, yeah i could do whatever it takes just to be the most of it.. although i am using it for my own good and i do think that i will not use it to harm humankind..haha! cause i am not good at hurting people...ahaha!

I was just doing some studying on a topic related to this.

It was Friedrich Nietzsche who said: "Man's number one motivation is to increase his power over others and other things as opposed to his pursuit for please and avoidance of pain." (Haha, I can't believe I actually remembered the quote). And it was Thomas Hobbes who pointed out that "without government, we would all be at war and it would be every man for himself." and that "we're all naturally selfish and unsocial creatures". He also believed that the best type of government is when a ruler has complete control over us. But we won't discuss that.

So think about it. We naturally want more power over others because we're selfish. We need government to keep us in check and awe or else we'd be following natural law, killing each other and looking for other things to take over. Power corrupts those who have it because we want more and more of it but when people control us and lead us in the opposite direction of what we naturally want, we can live a morally right life. Therefore, we need someone who we can trust won't become corrupted with all this power to lead our government and society.

Absolute Power... Guess it really depends on a person's own perspective... But If I was given one... The first thing I would do is seal it. No kidding here. Question is will I seal it because I'm afraid of being corrupted? No. Definitely not.

Let us put it this way. You got everything you could ever want, nothing is above you and nobody can oppose you. You get what you want without any arguments from anyone... Sure maybe at the first hundred years it would be fun, heck you can play with other people if your bored... But in the end... Your life will have no meaning or color.

Power corrupts because we crave something more. But absolute power is a whole new level. Yes you can stop suffering and promote peace but it's foundations will be weak. You can control every people, but they will all just remain hollow...

Truth be told the reason why life is worth living is because we have struggles... We bleed, we cry, we fight and hate... But we also have the capability to heal, to laugh, to make peace and to love... When you ague with a friend, family or other love one... Isn't the moment when you get to patch things up the most enlightening moment? With absolute power you cannot grow and experience this things even if you try to recreate it coz you know it will be fake...

So if I do get absolute power... As I said I'll seal it and just enjoy my regular life because its not the world who controls my life if it's boring or ordinary... Its me. Now I would live all of you this question:

I would like to believe that I have the fortitude to not become corrupt but I will be honest and say there would probably be a small chance I would. I would probably develop a smaller portion of a god complex like Light in Deathnote. I don't think I would go as far ... but .... I have a feeling I would be tempted to dish out justice as I see fit.
