Well, I own a very slow PC (512mb RAM) and I got not enough extra money to upgrade my Notebook but I found some tweaks and programs that might boost your Computer speed by 2x.

The Regedit boost

1. Go to RUN and type DEVMGMT.MSC, Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS then right click PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL and properties. Go to ADVANCE SETTINGS. Set the TRANSFER MODE of driver 0 and 1 to DMA IF AVAILABLE.

2. Make sure that Windows prefetcher is prefetching everything. Go to RUN and type REGEDIT and go to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Memory Management \ PrefetchParameters]. Find "EnablePrefetcher" and double-click on it. Modify the value from "3" to "5".

3. Go to RUN type REGEDIT and go to key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive]. Set the value to "1". Beware that this one requires a 256mb RAM CPU or higher.

4. Increase Drive performance by disabling 8.3 name creation
Go to RUN and type REGEDIT and go to Key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation]. Set the Value to "1".

5. Reboot/restart your PC.

Note: You have to follow the instructions carefully. Careless modifying might mess up your PC registry and may crash it.

The ebooster boost

This boost allows your PC speed up by using your USB flash drive as a cache storage so that the Programs you frequently use will perform faster. I can only give the trial version here since the crack version/patch is rumored to contain virus. Don't worry you can still use ebooster for 4 hrs after startup.

when you try to do this create a system restore point just in case something goes wrong

I use Registry Booster and Advanced System Care.

There is a free version of Advanced System Care which will clean up your registry pretty well.
Thought I would recommend Registry Booster if you want to buy it or can find it pirated.

This sounds really useful.

I researched this a bit and these tweaks are workable to some extent but at one's own risk. There are a few factors to consider before doing these tweaks...

another tip is to defragment often. it also increases performance. i also suggest getting ccleaner. (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) it cleans temporary files that eat up hard disk space and the best of all its free

Windows XP uses DMA Mode on ATA/ATAPI (IDE) devices by default. If those devices apparently can't use "DMA if available" properly is b/c of the chipset controller/device you have running on your computer. It probably would be best to stick to PIO instead.

Old ass source: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

I'm not even sure if this tweak even does anything worth while. If anything, I think it would slow prefetching files making the system even slower...

Why would you want to disable this? Enabling the "DisablePagingExecutive" simply tells Windows not to swap the kernel and drivers to disk. If you're going to be debugging drivers, then go for it, otherwise, stop effin' around with this setting. It's not going to give you a "performance" boost.

4. Increase Drive performance by disabling 8.3 name creation
Go to RUN and type REGEDIT and go to Key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation]. Set the Value to "1".

I guess if you're not running 16-bit apps, this might be okay. However, I still don't see the "performance boost" in tweaking this. I would say don't do it.

Muckin' around with these registry changes will vary with different Windows XP machines/hardware/drivers/etc... Someone might actually benefit while someone else will have to take their computer to the shop and shell out money. Personally, I think these suggestions are harmful. You want to increase performance on your existing hardware? Friggin' shell out the money and upgrade! Memory for laptops now a days is really not all that expensive.

I also forgot to add this: http://tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks11.htm

Look at the "bad tweaks" section. Some of the tweaks mentioned on this thread are show on the website I provided. Just sayin'...

eBooster is a good program, also add tune-up utilities and activate turbo mode so your PC will move at 522 Movement Speed permanently. LOL

Anyway, I'm not encouraging piracy but Tune-up Utilities 2010 is not freeware. (Though you can search for a cracked version [caution: this is encouraging piracy])
