TO MANGA!!!!!
Ok - after reading through each and every post and discussing it to bits amongst ourselves, we have decided to add Manga to OS.
We will try to explain the reason for our decision as best we can as well as try and answer the many questions raised in the previous announcement, so pls forgive me if this is ultra long post
Reasons
1) We have already embarked on a new upgrade for OS which we hope will be ready soon, but the actual date will depend on how soon Jim can complete the revamp of his programs, so since we are already on that horse, we decided adding a new pc of luggage aint gonna kill us (we hope:15:)
2) When the Founding Fathers started OS, they were not sure it was going to survive even a month, but we are now almost at 18 months and holding steady which means that while there will always be uncertainties, what is life if we dont constantly challenge ourselves to hit new goals and heights? (Or in this case - challenge Jim ... I do absolutely nothing here:5:)
3) For the longest time we struggled to have over 300 users online and every month we bit our nails and waited to see if we can survive for another month (As Russ says ... we are always broke) But now we have over 600 online users everyday and hitting our goals have become just a wee bit easier due to our kind donators. So why not be optimistic that we will have the same support going forward?:51:
What is the worse thing that can happen if we fail? Simple - we take down the manga section and go back to just a streaming site
Would we lose members if we add it and then take it off? I honestly dont think so as our members have been amazing in the support and loyalty to this site.
Now to answer some of the concerns brought out:33:
1) Money
Actual increase in need would be $20 a month = total $220. Now consider this - every other streaming or download site, requires anywhere from $500 - $4000 in donations a month to survive and most of them dont carry as much content as we do. This is even though they ALL have advertisements. Has anyone ever wondered how we survive on $200 a month
Have faith is us guys. We have one of the most brilliant minds behind this site and believe me - everyday his main job (after working on improving OS) is to look for cheaper ways to do more things. Have faith in our donators, after all - having manga may bring in more members who may help to donate more. Whats the harm in being otimistic?
Also at the beginning - there were some who put in an awful load of money to get this site going (which is NOT captured in the donators list) So if the need arises we will do the same again.:53:
2) Bandwidth
As I mentioned - we are already on a pathway that will add more bandwidth to our site. Someone had done a very extensive study on how manga uses more bandwidth. Jim disagrees (I am not going to do the maths) and we believe him. He says it takes far less space and bandwidth to read pics than stream and gives his assurance that bandwidth will not be affected. Being he is the most brilliant person I know - I will support him. (Absolutely no offense pls to the one who did the study - we value all your opinions):57:
3) Adult Material<br>
Yes - there is a chance that young minds will get corrupted but c'mon guys? As Alexa said - with the absolute abundance of free porn - both natural and unnatural freely available, would kids come to see pics of beautifully drawn men kissing on OS for thrills?
Again - have faith is us. We have managed to keep this site PG-13 for 18 months and we will ensure no Doujinshies or really bad stuff get through. And if we find they are getting through or there is abuse of the site, we will take the manga down or take the abuser down:16:
4) Uploading and duplicating
Jim is trying to make the uploading ultra-easy where members can upload into a sort of quarantine area and then the Admins or Manga mods can approve and upload. So this will be the least of our concerns.:1:
5) Legalities
Uhhhh ... ummm ... well ... huh ...who really beleives that having a streaming site is strictly legal? While there is a gray area where current TV broadcasts are shown... is this all we have? (*looks around and whispers ... "Not going to say more"):15:
6) Workload
Hmmmmmm ... Now this is a genuine concern. Right now unfortunately the only Admin working full time on OS is Jim. He gets a teaspoon of support from Chiva and I occasionally due to our other obligations and of course there are our faithful video mods, uploaders and moderators who dispite very busy schedules manage to chip in faithfully. Can they take on more work? I dont think so. They are already stretched to the max. But there is where we will need to ask for volunteers. The strange thing is - I have been on a lot of other anime sites and believe me I am amazed at how simply "nice" our members are. I am very sure everyone will support us *keeps fingers crossed and closes eyes tightly*
I think this clears up most of the main concerns. Pls feel free to add more comments - we always value our members input. However Jim is determined to add manga and already has 15GB of manga ready (thats like a huge load) and we are definitely going through with it.
Will we succeed? We sincerely hope so ... and if not ... well we can always blame the mermaids ...or the puppy who ate our homework ...
So with that
ALL HAIL OS,
ALL HAIL JIM
ALL HAIL MANGA
ALL HAIL .... (well you get the point!)
