This certainly crossed my mine the instant I touched on Death Note. The plot lines made it vaguely familiar. But, I was almost throughout the show, complaining to myself...this guy (Light) loses big time to Lelouch... it's just a personal opinion.

I dont think its a question of who is smarter as both were trying to do different things so you dont have something to compare their intelligence by; they are both brilliant characters. However, Lelouch has more resources at his disposal and would be able to locate and kill Light where as all Light has is his brain. He's not from a rich family and the access to the criminal data base isn't all that useful for finding out Lelouch's name. Not to mention even if he found out where he goes to school and his student name; Lelouch Lamperouge isn't his real name. He would have to find out that he is also the prince of Charles Vi Britania making him Lelouch Vi britania. The task of getting Lelouch's name is way more difficult than finding Light and killing him with night mare frames. Not to mention; the best way to find out things about Lelouch would be to find a way to get into a situation like with L and Lelouch where they are near each other. However, being near Lelouch like that makes you vulnerable to being Geass'ed and if Light doesn't know then he won't think to take precautions against it.

Now having said that, the chance light does have would be to get Misa's shinigami to kill Lelouch(since Ryuk wont help) and then it would be simple for Light to win...

so yeah; thats my opinion

Using school as an argument isn't really very accurate in terms of determining brilliance. I remember Einstein having troubles at school. Did that make him stupid? No, he just didn't like the school's methods of teaching. If there was a test of some sort (SATs, IQ tests, whatnot), then that will be an accurate (somewhat) tool of measuring intelligence.

To me, schools just measure how hard you work and how diligent you are in studying.

Now to stay on topic,

oh i didn't read the question...I just saw lelouch vs. light and talked about that...

in terms of power lelouch has more power simply because light requires a name and a face and versus Zero he has neither while lelouch has minions, nightmare frames, and his geass at his disposal. Plenty power to render the DN useless.


as far as smarts go; I would have to go with Light; he was able to influence people and manipulate them without using a mind altering power... well i guess the DN kind of had the power to control people but not to the extent lelouch's power did.

And Lelouch wasn't being put up against someone who's entire life has been to solve crimes and figure out mysteries. Near and Mello combined were able to out smart him only because they finally decided to work together.

And lelouch planning his death wasn't a stroke of brilliance. He was going to be killed regardless but he persuaded that guy to kill him at a more convenient time and to help him with his plan. Lets face it; lelouch got through what he did merely out of luck that people didn't just kill him when they had the chance. Could have been killed instead of taken to the emperor; emperor could have killed him instead of using him to lure out the rebels, if rebels hasn't saved him he would have died, if the emperor hadn't been side tracked by CC the emperor most likely would have killed him, everytime Lelouch came close to death he was saved by the whims of others. In terms of flat out intellect, it's hard to compare the two because they come from such different worlds. Both are skilled at calculating a win out of their respective situations.
In terms of strategy, I'd have to say that Lelouch is the smarter one. Light had an intricate plan, yes, but he let his own emotions and his own bias distract him. Lelouch seemed ready to give up at times, but he persevered and calculated emotional reactions into his plan and ended up succeeding.

*shrug* That's my opinion. It's been forever since I watched either of those series, haha.

All hilarities aside, people saying that Light doesn't plan on a scale as large as Lelouch forget that Light's ONLY real obstacle is in Japan, thus why he only needs to plan in according to this opponent, whereas Lelouch's opponents are on a much larger scale.

Personnaly, I'd think Light would use Lelouch's weakness against him, but overall Lelouch is probably better.

Agree, Light plans went perfect was great but fails in the final one is really a bad part.

Well on Lelouch side, it's a good thing that he fail one of his plan but in the ending he could make up from it.

Hmm, this is a tough one... strictly speaking based on their respective series, the "smarter" one would have to be Light.

Since, first of all, Light's opponents were definitely smarter than any of Lelouch's. Secondly, Lelouch had to rely on the intelligence of C.C. and other supporting characters, while Light fought on his own. Thirdly, Lelouch made numerous mistakes which made him lose Euphemia and others, while the only reason Light lost was because of the carelessness of Miyami(i forgot the name, the guy with long spiky hair that adored Kira as a god). Lastly, the way they used their respective power, Lelouch=Geass, Light=Deathnote, Light's overall tactical prowess wins over Lelouch.XD

Both of them had masked their true identities, Lelouch would probably had a hard time finding who Kira is and the same goes for Light, he would never knew exactly who Zero is... I had to vote for Light. Lelouch's plans just look more grand because he had weak opponents... He's dealing many opponents but rather weak... and another is he had a lot of supports behind him that made each and every plan successful. He had CC at his side. Light on the other hand could only trust himself and Misa isn't that smart as him. Besides, He had very much strong opponents like L and Near... they're just waayy too smart compared to Lelouch's opponents... Light is actually in the face of a much harder opponents...

Many times Lelouch wanted to give up. He almost give in to the mental stress and pressure he's continually facing... but Light is always confident and he execute most of his plans in a very dangerous manner. Ever wonder why? It's because he's so confident and he knows himself too much that he would make it... To be smart, you have to know yourself deeply and to be able to know your capabilities, to be able to measure yourself to the point that your confident of putting your life on the line... Light has it all...

BUT when in terms of the ending... Light failed terribly but you can't say much to Lelouch either... couldn't he have made plans other than killing himself off? well, at least, Lelouch died in a much more elegant way than Light...
