Well mine is also caused from my habit of liking a song depend on the message of the songs and the rhythm.

I started sueing cartoons and perferring anime. Whenever I watch TV, I criticize them. I spend most of my time watching anime, even sacrificing sleep time just for anime. I become over-ambitous sometimes. I drink lot's of coke. I talk just like an anime character. I say curse words in Japanese... therefore, I have no problem dealing with the teacher about it. I sigh every time I'm asked to do something, just like an anime character. I say "Hai hai" instead of "Sure Sure." I speak in Japanese often. I started to hate the west and love the east. I'm suddenly proud to be Filipino (I used to want to be an american.). And uh... many more that I don't realize yet... oh yeah, I perfer H over P...

well, yeah.
i started to curse in japanese. (which is good in many ways but bad too
because people mostly don't understand what you're saying)
since im in a community where the only anime they know is naruto and dragonball,
they seem to not understand my hobby ._.
and watching anime and reading manga takes up a lot of my time
so i am not expecting to do any better this next school year >_>

There are serveral things i guess =)
first, its the music. I barely listen to any english/german(in my case german) music anymore but mostly to japanese music.
Also, when im searching a word in, for example, french, often the japanese words pops into my mind and i just think "Omg >.<"
third: when i start eating i clap hands like you are doing when your saying "Itadakimasu"
Luckily i can refrain from actually saying it. =D

Well.... I Started Watching Anime Since I was a Tuddler... and until now I'm still watching anime's... I think there particular things I've developed....
Watching anime's for One week Straight.. (Includes: Eating on bed while watching, Pausing so i can go to the toilet or take a bath, and literally no sleep)
I can understand a bit of Japanese without a subtitle. Listen to Anime and J-Music Always...
I commonly use Japanese reactions ("Ara?", "Hai!", "Nanda?", "Aree~", etc) and honorifics(-san, -kun, -chan, etc) to all people i meet and communicate with.(Otaku or non-Otaku) And Cursing on Japanese... XD
I sigh more frequently when being ask for something... and mutter random japanese reactions... ("yare-yare", "Sa~!", "Yosh~!")
I always say "Itadakimasu~!" after Praying before every meal...
and read manga's and lots more..... XD

I kinda agree with you here since my playlist now in my iPod is starting to be filled with anime songs then I developed a little distaste to english music but I still listen to those type of music sometimes but not before I started becoming an otaku I will always listen to other music

I now listen to anime songs a lot, then can't sleep if there is an unfinished business about
Anime.. lives with anime and it made me create another world that is exclusive for anime only.
it also made me ignore the time.

Some of the effect of being an otaku, for me anyways.
Procrastination: I can procrastinate a WHOLE lot easier because of anime lol i will tell myself things like "after this episode i will start math" or "i can finish three episodes in an hour" or "I am going to eat lunch and watch this anime, but i will get done before that, i cant just leave an episode half way, i will just do school afterwords".

I think the side effect for being an Otaku, is almost mimicking the "sigh" or odd ball expressions as seen from the anime and applying them to work..
Trust me, I get too many laughs every time, even when I'm actually serious.

I wouldn't exactly call it a side effect per say but I find it difficult and some times annoying to talk to hang around others who don't watch anime or don't like the same music as me. I also would rather listen to Japanese music than anything here.

Side-effects?

well, so far you mentioned this side-effects
1. you like anime songs than local
actually I dont like the local songs this days
so much boring
2. socialization level going down
with this I can know who my friends
trully are
3.tendency to curse with japanese words
ZenNaari explained it enough
4. remembering something funny out of the blue
this only means that were not senile
5. watching animes late at night
this thing is like a training to me
to train mybody to work late at night
6. reading mangas
this increases my reading speed
and comprehension

Hmm, due to my interest in anime, manga and all things otaku, I discovered the world of cosplay. I cosplay not only during events but at random incidents at my university. My professors have gotten used to it and so have my peers, its fun to see an adult gawk for a few seconds when I walk around in cosplay, its more fun if kids recognize the character and say, "look mom its ****". Some negative side effects include my peers forgetting my name and instead call me "anime guy" or "cosplay guy" but overall its all good! XD

Daydream WWAAAYYY too much... Often times making an anime out of my normal mundane life.
After daydreaming i'll "night" dream when i'm laying down trying to go to sleep. Usually i'll concoct some crazy anime story and whip it up with my real life friends/activities.
Sigh... then of course i'll dream in my dreams some CRAZY things...
Yeah. Side effect - i've become a dreamer...

I don't like people much. Granted I didn't really care for most people to begin with.. being a shut in makes it worse. On top of that I find social interactions to be tiring and at times very hard to deal with. Yeah.. most people just annoy me. Of course there are exceptions.

I'd say a side effect of being an otaku is you lose a lot of time. When I start watching an anime and it's really good I'll spend every waking moment that I can watching it. Only stopping to go to sleep way too late and to go to school or work. Not saying it's a bad thing but time really flies when you are watching anime. Also saying random Japanese words and getting weird looks from friends and family. lol

The only side effect I've had from being an otaku is more knowledge in anime and manga...oh and sometimes I tend to speak in jap terms :)))
The side effect of being an otaku to me are the following in no particular order:
-increased knowledge on a lot of things (varied since there are lots of anime out there)
-changed sleep (I became nocturnal at the age of 13)
-learned a new language (a total plus, of course)
-acts like anime characters (a friend told me so, she's an otaku as well, but not like me)
-gets nearly no time at all to study (absolutely a minus)
-appreciates japanese culture more and more and more (includes songs and other media)
-and there are a few others that I can't really remember right now...

- I started waking up 1-2am in the morning to watch anime before going to school
- I started talking non-sense

I get very angry during power outages. I eat more Ramen. I eat more seafood. I've acquired a fetish for school girl and maid uniforms. I've become more aware of how obese our worlds population is becoming. Walking around and not having a car bothers me less. Wants of being free from this annoying society grow stronger. I try to levitate after jumping in the air while initiating a long dialogue. I feel conversations with people should go more smooth than they actually do. People often have no idea what I am talking about.. and I laugh at them for it. People annoy me.. more than usual.
Although I am not sure just how many of these are side effects of being Otaku, I have no doubt it has some impact.

I've wanted a BlackBerry since I was like 10. I've had a cell phone since I was 9 (concerned mother ftw) and every time my plan was up and I'm allowed to get a different cell phone, I've asked for a BlackBerry.. but was never allowed because I was too young. Just recently, I was allowed to change my phone.. my mom asked if I wanted a BlackBerry.. nope. I wanted a phone that looks exactly like a favourite anime chara's phone. FML.
I say "hai" whenever someone calls me. No, not to be like, "Hi, what's up?". I mean it in a "yes?" kinda way.
I prefer sitting on the computer and watching anime over going out with friends. >:| ie. My friends wants to go out tonight and watch a movie and have a sleepover. Okay to watching a movie.. but hell no to sleeping over, I'm going home and watching more anime pl0x.
My school uniform is pimped because of all the anime I've been watching.
I've had to stop myself on many occasions to bringing in an anime girl picture whenever I get my haircut. :\
I lol'd reeeeeeeeally hard at the anime part in Horton Hears a Who.
I say "ehhhhhhhhh" alot.
There's alot. But I probably don't even notice some stuff I do.

*Decrease amount of sleep
*Lose most of my study time
*High electricity bill (my computer is always on for at least 6-10 hours a day)
*Degrades my health (always sitting, no exercise)
*I also became spendthrift (Always buying anime CDs, anime keychains, mangas, etc.)
*Degrades my eyesight
*I sometimes unconsciously speak Japanese
*One may sometimes look weird to non-Otakus
*Forgets most non-anime memories, I got no choice but to delete some of my memories for anime terms/japanese words(like what we did yesterday, or what day is it today)
*I, sometimes make weird facial expressions (like laughing while eyes are closed, or the lazy look)
That's all I can think ATM,

:3..
well, there are more side effect of being an otaku, but, it depends on the person how they'll manage their time..
mine are:
good effects:
a. A criticizer of one manga on how it can make it more beautiful.(I do this for my friends that love to draw manga)
b. I can give opinion to a person that almost has the same situation of one particular anime.
c. It awakens me, for knowing one's true self.
d. I avoid some problems that also has the same situation on the anime
e. It teaches me to speak Japanese.
f. It gives me inspiration to do something like in school.(try watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann that's my top 1 anime >3<)
g. It makes me more comfortable at home when I watch animes.
h. It teaches me what is the right thing to do.
Bad effects:
a. Lack of sleep
b. criticizing a person
c. sometimes forget to eat lunch
Other effects:
a. sometimes non-otaku/ordinary person just don't get me.
b. craving for some anime, manga and other things that has a connection to manga and anime.

From my point of view...watching anime makes you comfortable is negative...it seems that with this effect, it only leads to escaping of reality

for me now i also end to listen more to Jap song and i dont really like english songs or others. Plus, most Jap songs have good meanings in it and the rhythm is also very catchy. I also tend to daydream more about anime now too...

Well I used to be some sort of brat when I was young, often disliked by classmates. However after being an otaku, I learned a lot from various anime on how to be a better person and stuff. And yes, it improved my social life hell lot more.
SIDE EFFECTS : Being a militant, I have a hard time coping with the addiction as I could not watch anime everyday now. Takes a heavy toll mentally.

Both of our balance is broken. instead of balancing our time with the Anime and Studying, I guess I spend more time in OS watching Animes, and that includes not anymore studying too. And because of this, I now always Skipped Classes~

FIRST, total ADDICTION!
SECOND, I have no time in studying.
THIRD, Insomnia! I always sleep at night late.. and even if I'm in bed.. I still can't sleep because I can't stop thinking about it.
FORTH, the electricity bill gets higher! everyday I use my computer to watch online.. If no class.. I watch anime WHOLE DAY!
FIFTH, low social status. T.T

I don't think preferring anime songs
than other songs like international or what
is a side effect ...
well, i like anime songs more to those ...
the idea of it being a side effect, i strongly disagree ...
side effects are those usually bad ones ...
i don't see anything bad from liking anime songs more :)
just sayin' though ...
----------------------------------------------------------------
well the side effects of it to me are:
- sometimes i eat late
- sometimes i sleep late
- i don't usually go outside the house, just stucked at home XD

The side effects being an Otaku to me were:
I always sings anime songs....
I eat less...
I sleep very late...
I usually don't go outside....I just go outside to play basketball or going to places...
I speak Japanese words to my family members like anime characters do
like saying Osu instead of saying hello~
I'm mimicking some anime characters who speak differently...
I'm studying less...
I'm collecting more anime stuffs....instead of buying important items...

I think the only side effect on being an otaku on me is that I prefer 2d over 3d girls... but it didn't really affect my taste on music since if it sounds good I will listen to it(lol but it also made me like Japanese songs)... ohh and I draw sketches(I suck at it) in manga style once in awhile...

I had become a big spender.
I only listen to anime songs.
I always eat late.
I usually adapt the habit of the characters.
I get happy easily during the nearest next days of release chapter of the manga I'm following.
My mind is always full of anime and has no interest in the reality.

Hmm side effects I never asked myself that before but here goes
-Terrible Eyesight (gaming had some part in that though)
-Different taste in music (find myself feeling disappointed with local music due to love of japanese/korean music)
-Time schedule (find myself watching anime more than any other entertainment activity)
-Social standing (not many people in the U.S. well where I live, bother to watch or care for anime thus a big difference in hobby's and the like)
but either way I'm proud to be an Otaku and wouldn't change a thing if I got a chance to!
