Hmm.. If I were you, I'd get/buy the latest version installer (possibly DVD) then search the net for compatible cracks.
We had a hard time installing that one, too.

Depends on what you mean, All the previous suggestions are great, so it really hinges on what you want.
If you want a legal copy to play online then getting via Steam or another service would work.
For illegal copies, Capone is correct about thepiratebay (http://thepiratebay.org/search/left%204%20dead%202/0/7/0), they have cracks and complete copies - just be sure to read the comments as it will have information of problems or help to setup. Although playing online with a cracked copy can be a headache as you usually have to find cracked servers and sometimes other issues pop up - but for single player it's fine.

Personally have the Steam version (http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/) which is great, they had a sale (I think it's still on :edit: ended today) so might be able to get it cheaper if it's available in your region.

PS: Ganeva seems to have forums, why not post a question in the l4d section, might get some useful info from people who already got the game and know the area.
