I participated, hahaha. But the lights are already off to begin with. I wonder how much energy could be conserved if all lights in the world is turned off within one hour.

I got off OS, turned off my computer, lamp and light... and then went to bed for a nap from 8:00~9:30 XD

I wonder if there's any point doing that since I'm going to not need to sleep much tonight... therefore will stay up later with lights on ^^;

I don't really mean to offend anyone here, but exactly how much difference will one hour make? This is like, once a year, right? I can imagine it might make more of a difference in terms of energy conservation if it was once a week, or heck, once a month. (If you're a home owner, that would be a blessing to your electric bill if you did it that often)

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that people don't want to waste the earth's resources quickly, but if people REALLY want to conserve energy, they should start thinking a little bigger.

The good intentions are there and I can understand that, but really, the effort is hardly in there. Anyone can turn off their lights and non-essentials for one hour once a year without any inconvenience whatsoever.

Just a random thought that popped in my head... :^P

I guess most people cant survive a week without electricity? I dunno.

Hallvard
03-27-2010, 08:19 PM
It has very little effect, yes. But it is more of a symbolic thing.
I turned off all my lights last year and will do so this year as well.
Even thou I don't believe any of the "man-made greenhouse effect" talk, I do enjoy the 1 hour without light-pollution. :)

And it's easy to go without electricity for a week's time, when I grew up in the middle of nowhere there were times when the electricity was gone for over a week.
A fire in the fireplace and a old stove, candles and a good book solves any problems.

I do prefer to have electricity thou, as it's kinda hard to use the pc without...

i kinda hate bright stuff... so... i never turn... well maybe not never... i usually keep my light's of... and for cooler... i open my window... i hope that kind of help...

I don't like bright light so I usually already have my lights off... hell i turned my computer off for it and read some of one of my books by old oil lamp :D it was awesome :)
we use a wood/coal burning stove so we at least didn't get cold :D

being off topic: that picture of Soldier Blue is awesome and fits oh so well :3

I meant an hour once a week. Added up, an hour once a week is a lot more energy saved than an hour once a year. :^P

I don't really buy into that stuff either. Still, saving energy never hurts. There'll be an hour or so when nobody's home here tonight anyways so I figure that'd cover it. :^P

I agree that shutting off all power for one hr every year is not going to make any difference in saving energy, however I do believe this is an excellent teaching tool, especially for the younger generation (below 10 yrs) who have grown up in a pure digital age where everything and anything is connected to power and in their eyes this power will never run out

For one day a year, instead of focusing on the madness and mayhem around us, we can use the media to call attention to the depletion of our resources and we can make the young ones (the future generation) aware of what we are facing.

I remember I read a short story a long time ago where the earth was invaded by invisible electricity/energy eating beings and coz we couldnt fight them, mankind had no choice but to go back to the days of oil lamps and horse drawn carriages. In the end after over a 100 years or so, the invasion had only done good to our planet

I also remember when growing up and there would be power black outs, I would sit on the step and look at the stars and dream or my brother would play the guitar and he, my mum and I would sing. I know some of my friends did the same last night.

Its good to get away from lights, TV and even computers and just reconnect with the peace and quiet of the dark. Even if it does no good to the earth its good for our soul and no harm is done

Very well said. I think technology has become so dominant that the younger generations (myself included, since I grew up with video games) that a lot of people are forgetting how to enjoy the finer points of life.

All of a sudden, thanks to your story, I want to be out on a porch in the cool night air chatting with the one I love for hours. Just us, the moon, and the stars... Something so simple, yet it would feel like heaven to me. :^3

Ah... well... In the meantime, I need to get back to my semi-charmed reality which has had me dazed and confused lately. Cheers! :41:

I love our planet I wish to participate in every way I can. I'll help clean and save energy! Does anyone know that every seconds of electricity degrades our planets capabilities? Well, the next time you'll be out try to find the changes that isn't there naturally and you will know I'm right. Conserve energy its the least we can do for our planet isn't the only one suffering but also our future. There will be an Earth day-be sure to participate.:41:
