The art is just a bonus.
Also, I will often read manga that were drawn by the mangaka of my favorite series

I like to read manga with beautiful characters and art.
And I like it when it has lots of details and humorous parts.
Mostly I read shojo I guess. I'm not that into horror or action.

i look at the art.. not just the drawing but the whole layout.. some shoujo are hard to read for me
then the genre.. i dont like ecchi.. maybe a little but not so much. also horror and too much action..
then the first chapter.. normally 1st chapter has 40-60.. after 20-30 and still no developments i stop reading
then dept.. if i find the manga too shallow after a few chapters i stop reading the series
mainly i go for art and dept..
First impression is very VERY important, usual the art is a clear indication for the quality/genera the manga is eg: shoujo.
mainly what keeps me interested are manga involving storylines with twists and turns, conflicts, time traveling, raw emotions, and not just generic black and white good/evil but alittle of that gray area.
What tends to turn me off are manga that are a cooky cutter of the current manga market.

usually the art is the first impression for me. Then Its just the direction of the storyline and the attitude/beliefs of the main character that make me continue. Twists and turns catch me immediately.

well said. i simply agree to this.
for me i think the art, storyline, the characters has to get my interest but its not that hard for me to get interested in an anime or manga.

I would have to say that it's the drawing style and if there aren't any mess on the panes. I have poor eyesight so I kinda choose mangas that have clear pictures of what they're supposed to show.

in choosing a manga...It must have a good and interesting plot....i really like the genre comedy so any manga with a touch of comedy is preferable...it's okay that the manga is still continuing but at least it have the qualifications that I like.

I used to read anything with a good story as long as it wasn't shounen or ecchi.
Another thing that deters me sometimes is when the character looks a bit strange. I can't pay attention to a story when the character distracts me too much.
Vampire Knight was one I remembered reading. Nowadays it's like Skywalk3r does, if I like an anime then I'll go manga version.

First the genre - I don't usually read anything with too much action, shoujo-ai, ecchi, and shounen-ai. Not that I'm against them (hehe). Aside from those, I usually read anything. Next would be the whole artwork - if the whole thing is pleasing enough to the eyes. Last (but definitely not the least) is if the story is actually going somewhere. It gets tiring if it doesn't :|.

lapis mostly thinks about how its drawn..if its drawn really bad..lapis can't read it. simply because >.>..your gonna be looking at that for a long time and if its ugly/weirdly drawn..just give up. unless its a great story...no i still wouldn't read it if its drawn bad *couges* bleach..*couges*..i'd say i love manga thats nicely drawn and has a good storyline. maybe mystery hint's in the frist few chapter's or just plain attention grabing moments even the weirdest thing like someone triping xD as long as it has a storyline and not just all funny stuff though..mystery..and action. then its all good lapis think's ^^

first i look at the genre to see if has some of the genres i generally like to read but im pretty not picky on that because sometimes mangas are genre'd wrong. than i read the summary just to get a general feel of the story. after that i actually start reading and usually no matter how bad ill stick thru for the first chapter or 3. but the first things i look for are good drawing style.. if the drawings suck but it has a really good plotline id rather read a book and not have to suffer through trying to figure out what drawing means what. than if the drawings are atleast decent than i move on to story line.. If after the first 3 chapters its really looking like its not going anywhere i switch to a different manga and start over again :D sometimes ill quit like midway if it starts getting repeative or really really boring though

For me the biggest issue is content. If the manga or manhwa appears to go nowhere, then even if the drawing is out of this world I don't spend money on it or time.
I also consider how many volumes there are in a series, and whether the art is good enough to keep me interested in it. Price range also has an effect. For example, I'm dying to buy the Nana set but it's out of my price range no matter how I look at it. Older volumes aren't that expensive but if you add them up and then add in the price of shipping and handling... well I cringe a little. But the Gunslinger Girl and Eureka Seven series are both sitting in their nice little cases on my night stand until I can buy the rest of their volumes.

Duh, design. Sometimes characters are best in design in the manga rather than the anime. Like Mikan from TLR, she's way cuter in the manga.

to me the storyline is first. But of the drawing is really bad then i can't read it, though if the story is great i might not even care if the drawing is bad. as for genre i prefer shounen, comedy, romance, though i sometimes take my chance and i choose a random manga that i was not interested in.

Third *Is it finished? If not... how often do new chapters come out?*

First, I'll have to see if the drawings are good. I mean more realistic.
Second, I'll check if the category is under my likings. Especially Smut.

hmm... i like to check the release dates first, whether its on a set date, or if its irregular. I like to avoid irregulars, but sometimes they are very good. another thing i check for is the story, and if the summary sounds interesting i check it out the first couple chapters...though if i do not like the art or not in the mood for that genre i switch for something else and bookmark it for later. Another thing i consider is what is recommended to me by somebody else, because that adds a big factor into consideration(thats how i found Kurohime :D)

i normally search by genre first and pick those with tragedy, drama, psychological, mystery (or mind f*ck...LoL), mature (no, not necessarily ecchi/H -_-) or romance as a theme. then i read the summary and a loooot of reviews to make sure that it has a good plot or character development....a story or characters with a sense of realism is a plus for me. i also tend to sway away from those that are tagged as magical or action (i prefer them animated), but some do make the cut...LoL! as for the artwork, i don't mind it so much, but i do get an ample amount of eye candy (from light-hearted romance) when i like to take a break from all the drama, thrill or seriousness.

I got a couple of combinations consisting of certain "plus" words I look for in the description.
examples could be; Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Horror, Mature, Seinen, Tragedy, Martial arts. Lets say I see 2+ of these word then I read the description and if it seems all-right then mark it for closer examination.
another combo could be. Drama, Romance, Comedy, Gender Bender, Shoujo, Josei.
I have several of these depending on witch type of manga I wish to read, as well as some minus word that can make me disregard a manga completely.
Usually I find 4-5 mangas I would be interested in reading, then I read/browse through the first chapter of each manga before settling on the one I want to read. The rest are then stored for later or scrapped if the first chapter is disappointing.

depending on my mood i might just look for one with lots of girls with large breasts

Hmmm have you read Maid-sama? It has a great story line
but Usui just gets crappier and crappier looking every chapter

When I am looking for manga, I want something that is updated regularly. I don't want to have to look or wait forever for the next chapter. And once I get hooked up, it'd be bad if I don't get my dose of manga. Of course I like something exciting, one where the writer would make you want to read the next chapter... for every chapter, lol. Atm, bleach is failing... at least there're a lot of other manga out there xD! Oh here I go again typing everything that comes into mind.

The primary thing that I consider when choosing a manga is the art. Are the lines heavy or light? Are the eyes of the characters disproportionately large? Do the characters look like anthropomorphic spiders? Can I discern what is happening during the action sequences? I'm very particular about what styles I like/don't so I would find it extremely difficult to follow a story without visually pleasing lines. I have come across several manga with intriguing plotlines that were drawn in a style that rendered them unreadable (in my opinion).

I look at the genre first then preview/description/storyline then art /no1

not picky about art since artists improve with time (ex:ah my goddess), must have interesting story, can be anything but yaoi.

I look at the art and storyline first, then the genre, of course my favorites are supernatural/fantasy/horror/ecchi/action-types.

Usually I watched the anime of it and I want more :)
but besides that I really read into the storyline especially if it has these nice twists that'll make you look crazy if you don't read it, and also probably the artwork, quite picky if you ask me.

for me it all depends on the mood im in as to what type ill read (if im in a girly mood itll be romance lol) then i read the buff and if it sounds good ill look at the artwork it has to be attractive to make me want to read it as well as having an interesting story or i wont bother with it yes i am picky lol

I look at the cover and see if it is at least OK artwork. I don't like it if it just looks off to me because it will bother me while reading. But i will ALWAYS look over the artwork if the story is good. Can't beat a good story :] good artwork is just a nice extra...

I consider the expressions, art and the PLOT, of course. I also chose manga that fits my mood. If i'm lonely, i'll chose happy types, and if im bored, i'll chose comedy types! :)

First i see if i like the gereneres which are inside, second i see if i like the plot, third i see if i like the art. If a manga pass those three test i start reading it, after 2-3 chap i decide if it wasn't worth spending my time and drop it or decide to continue reading it.

art is what i usually look at. Then it needs to be funny or have a good/interesting story. if it has good art but bad story then i drop it.

I need to check the Sketches and Drawing Firsts, then the Genre, and the Story line. I always chose mangas like that, I'm a picky person xD

Hmm I'm sometimes quite picky. I would look at the genre, then the front cover and if I like the art. Sometimes if the story is good but I don't like the art, i'll stop reading but most of the time I get used to the characters. Although I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, I can't help it T_T

Yeah, Its art. Good Sketches are more Attractive to Read. And Also a Good Story Line (Which is the Most Important) I Pick, Shouju Manga. :3 My Genre of Picking a Manga is Shouju, Slice of Life, Comedy, Drama, Romance, Supernatural, Tragedy, Horror or Fantasy. It depends. I Also Read different Genres. But I don't Like Action and Shounen that much. ^^v By the Way, Ecchi is also good. But not too much. Haha!

Three things, genre, storyline and art. The art is secondary for me cause I feel that the story should be more developed.

*First of all, I take a look at manga's face. If it haven't a good presentation, then perhaps some day I will read it (even if have a good plot)
*In second I care about the art. Already have a style I like - something between Elfen Lied and Deadman Wonderland - characters with realistic bodies, stylized face, eyes and hair; and very big and well made scenaries.
*In third, I see if the plot isn't repetitive. I really hate when a beautiful manga calls my attention, but when I read it it's only one more action/romance history without anything new...
However, I read all type of manga - from innocent shoujo up to sadistic guro - I really don't care to the genre

What the manga has (romance, action, comedy etc.) i also consider if the story seems like it can be original and surprising the art also plays a factor but isnt as important as the story that is usually what i consider when choosing a new anime

hmm...well first off the cover has to get my attention. im picky with manga (i dont like too much action or anything scary) so i love colorful pretty covers, or humorous covers. second, the art-work has to also get my attention. if im looking at it and the artwork isnt pleasing to me, then i wont read it. third, the summary on the back. VERY important! and lastly, i flip through the book real quick to see some of the lines or faces to see if i would want to know more about them. thats really about it.

YURI!!!
but generally, i consider reviews, recommendations, ratings, and art. plot is not as important bc some manga are really good without an 'interesting' plot.
