Ok..This is an idea I'm taking from another board I belong to, but it's been fun every year, so I thought it could be a possible suggestion.
The main idea is that if people celebrate Christmas in some form or another (just a winter holiday that supports giving gifts), the board (in this case, Otaku-Streamers) can hold a Secret Santa event for all who would like to participate. Because OS is such a huge place with people from many different countries involved, it would have to be kept on a scale of separating gifts/participants by country (like since I'm from the US, I could only send a gift to someone from the US). That way, no one would die from shipping costs.
So, the way we did it was the people who want to register "sign up" (or just post that they want to participate) in a specified thread, along with some (relatively inexpensive) things that they like so no one would be at a complete loss for gift ideas. Then, a trusted board member (like Bindu or another admin) is PM'd the participants' addresses. The person's name is put into a random generator and Secret Santas are selected at random (this would be a big project though, as it would have to be separated by country). Then, if you're someone's Secret Santa, their address and username is PM'd to you and you can mail them a gift around Christmas. Afterwards, there can be another thread where people take a picture of what they received, state who their Secret Santa was, and thank them or post additional comments about the gift.
There are only some difficult factors with this idea:
- Not everyone is willing to give out their address, with good reason, because it's a scary world out there and trust is a huge issue.
- It would take a bit of time to sort the entire thing out since OS is essentially a global site, and the admin already have their hands full trying to improve the site every day.
- There are probably a few other kinks in the works that I'm overlooking.
Just an idea to spread some holiday cheer, even if it's just that - an idea.
