DotA is set up as an epic, ten player battle that takes place over the course of about an hour-long game. There are ten players at a time, split into two teams of five. Each player takes control of one hero, and the teams fight it out across the battlefield with the help of computer controlled units and structures until one side destroys their opponents' Ancient. The Ancients are heavily defended structures situated in the middle of each base.

Well in my opinion there are only two things you need if you wanna be good. Common Sense and Knowledge. Like when you see totally no one on the minimap, and you are in the half of the enemy you should go back so GOD damn fast, but normally its already too late if you notice it only then Oo (except you wanna be surrounded by at least 3 enemies :P ) or, even if the eneme has just 3 hp left and is running from you, DONT run into towers if you are slower than him, and dont have many chances of still getting him... Its always fun seeing a newb running into tower and killing him them but you should avoid that :D and well... Knowledge... you have to know what the heroes your up against can do, because else you will be like "Wtf? how did he kill me now?" sometimes..

and btw.. dont play em games.. em is totally crap Oo

and @ thread creator... get diffusal blade and butterfly with phantomlancer :D

Honestly, common sense in dota or any other game develops your mind really well that it may be overdeveloped. Overdeveloping may cause you to malfunction in an uncertain way I can't explain.. I've seen it happen a lot. Don't battle your common sense with anothers nor argue with one another on that. Words don't mean a thing.. Facta non Verba..

I used to play all the time.
I liked playing the beetle lookin' assassin guy and Juggernaut.
I wasn't very good and since it was a tight space lan party everytime, I heard about my failures frequently, lol.
People get so angry over DotA.

Haha that is a good example of what urban rivals is xD... wait were talking about dota... TEAMWORK... if u lose you can always blame the guy who became fodder or the guy who never goes along on attacks. take a look at HoN, wait nvm, its just a gankfest. well anyways... a few tips for the win. always give ur all on defense and offense. when team says attack. you attack, defend... then defend. never save ultimate skills or pretty much any attack skill for killing blows xD.

I suggest you guys play HoN (Heros of Newerth) the adapted version of DoTa but a solo standing online pc game. No lags from servers, able to recon 5min downtime after disconnection, same heros in dota and a few new heros and best of all the graphics are great.

Anyway i suggest actually buying warcraft III and the add-on the frozen throne because these two games are just great online. you can do WAY more then just playing dota... tons of funmaps... i think one costs about $15

Guinsoo picked up a project called League of Legends thats like dota, too but it sucks imo ._.

the ones behind HoN are S2 Games which actually have created 2 other games. They took the basics from Icefrog and are now slowly changing the game to their own one, for example some heroes are changing more and more or are inserted with changed skills.

Icefrog is still continuing on dota, and i guess he will be for a while...

Awesome game... but I quit after playing w/ garena... too many issues. Its good if you play lan though, but lan is not an option for me.

Played Heroes of Newerth (HoN) too. Practically dota with added features (best one is no lag) and good graphics. (Well at least this is what i know after playing closed beta). You can play it if you have $30 XD

Playing League of Legends (LoL) atm. Basically dota with a lot of added gameplay features. Has kiddie graphics and 100% of the heroes are not copied and pasted from dota. I recommend this if you want to learn how to play dota 'cause the community here is much more nicer and noob-friendly. Also, this game even has a tutorial >_>

BTW, HoN has IceFrog's blessing to copy dota while Guinsoo is working w/ LoL

Thus HoN and LoL are DotA's children :D

I don't mind DOTA, but there is a WHOLE bunch of other games I would rather play on WC3. DOTA kinda of took over the custom games list online... It makes me sad that there isn't as good of a variety like there used to be. Well let us all hope blizzard stops focusing on WOW and get to making Warcraft 4(it will never happen :()

you can win any match as long as you know how to use it properly.........

Nope. Wrong. While it's true that DotA's old creator were "Guinsoo", and "Eul", they left it fairly early and Icefrog took over. When they quit, DotA was just a funmap, like all others in wc3, and Icefrog created a unique gameplay. Thats why it sucks to compare DotA to LoL. When they "left" it, it was not nearly what it now is, and they made "League of Legends" into a totally different game

Teamwork is the one of the most important parts of DoTA. I've seen it many times. Anyway, call me out for a game, I do exist on garena.

I'm diverging from the topic here, but yes, LoL is made by the former creator of Dota Guinsoo. There are 2 maps, One is an AoS (aeon of strife) map which is what the dota map uses as a template and a smaller 2 lane map. The max level per hero is 18.

League of Legends is a game that was created based on DotA, the original creator of DotA helped in it's developement, it's a lot more n00b friendly, since there are no black lists and are in-game levels, so at the beginning you only fight other beginners, instead of trying to find a game with other n00bs to play with.

and try set video setting to low, change resolution to smalest, and turn off every application in background, turn off also firewall/antyvirus/inthernet browser, any taks that you have given beforehead-scanning for viruses, unziping etc
if this is not enought try program HiJackThis
and remember to do defragmentation from time to time, thats all i hope it helped
P.S. you can try overclocking and adding virtual memmory(page file should be set 2gb-3gb on the partition that you have dota)

Dota, I would say that OS has kept me from playing it. Great game for bonding with friends, which reminds me got to play. 6.71b, favorite hero Naix and Barathrum (Though haven't used Naix in a while and Barathrum, in Garena I haven't used in a while too.) Mostly random :D 1st beyond godlike hero and I think the only one in Garena is Spectre haha.

same here...if I start playing seriously I tend to overthink strategies and ultimately fail alot...that happend to me countless times even while playing with friends and not on garena....but whenever I play for fun I can be decent to semi good....

That's also for me, when things get heated up with my friends and the match no longer turns to a friendly game but a serious one I get pressured and start getting angry or irritated which doesn't really help my game nor my allies, that's why I don't like serious games, games like betting games or gamble.

Basically what happens to me, 1st game - we win because of easy easy gaming,
2nd game - other side gets irritated of losing, so they become serious, we lose.
3rd game - other side is still serious we just laugh our ass off and pick heroes we don't know how to use lol :))

I believe that that's DotA OMG, haha my favorite hero is Traxex, I would put Magic Missile, Lucent Beam, Bash (Slardar's) and Ravage haha, one heck of a stunner that is. It's fun to play it lol
