Hmm, I think an Otaku becomes too Otaku once they begin hurting themselves or others just to stay in the world on 'anime'. Though I use the same criteria for anything where it can become an addiction... Internet, food, drugs, shopping, wrestling alligator etc, etc.
An Otaku can be perfectly normal person who happens to like anime to the point that they have watched every episode that came out, memorized all theme songs, learnt Japanese solely from watching anime... but it become too Otaku when they start refusing to do anything that takes them from that world... for example not going to work/school or refusing to meet friends or family. Though at that point it isn't really about anime any more, it just becomes like any other addiction where one is trying to escape from something.

i don't think thats possible. being an otaku (to me atleast) means liking something too much and goes to the point of being extremely obsessed. Now, how can you be too much of an otaku, that would mean having to much of an already extreme condition.
my point is that someone who is too much of an otaku is still an otaku and not too much of one.

i have schoolmates in my school who're totally anime addicts, and one time, it was our free day--we get to wear whatever we want-- and the otaku i know of started wearing sort of an ancient gothic dress all the way down to her ankles, one hand with a teddy bear, the other with an oil lamp, it was scenic. she got everybody to stare at her.
that's my definition of a waaaay too otaku otaku. with no care in the world, just doing what you feel like, and eventually erasing the boundary between reality and fantasy.

if you watch lucky star and hayate no gotoku then you didn't get it at all the you're not an otaku. both anime has an lead otaku character

Ah......Well those character exceptionally taking their time as a hard core otaku.But then these two characters show two different characteristic of otaku as well.
