before i used to like dubs like samurai X but when i tried the subtitled ones i liked it more because the voice is more appealing... and most anime's have cute voices...

what do you think??

I agree. I think subs are better cuz some of us can learn Japanese languange (nipponggo) and japanese girls have this "charismatic" voice. :3

Hmmm...
actually for me it really depends on the voice acting..

cuz sumtimes english dubs are much nicer to hear.. for example... Afro samurai.

im really in between..

lol

English Subs are better!!!
Japanese voices are really good to hear...
Japanese boy's voice is more masculine for me...

Also, In subs, I learn two languages...
Sometimes, I've encountered new english words so my vocabulary widens...

Guys... What the Hell are you Thinking!!!!!

English Sub is Off the Hook... Lol... I meant is English Subs is OWnage!! wait no.... uhmm.. English Subs is AWESOME!!!... Anyway No one Can Beat English Subs... Japanese Voices is More Better than English Voices they just RUINED the Anime!!!

English Dubs = Fail
All the expressions get ruined and the Japanese originality gets replaced by American nonsense...
English voice acting is okay, but English Dubs = Fail..
Once again, English Dubs = Fail
For good English voice acting, watch English (mostly American anyway) cartoons...
Spongebob for example, good voice acting....

When I first watched Anime on TV - all I had was english dubbed and then when the channel was taken away and I started watching online, I was so upset that all I could get was the Japanese with english subs.
Then I realised how much better the Japanese was and now I cannot stand the English ... hahaha

I agree with most of the other commenters, subs are way better than Dubs. Aside from the Japanese cast expressing much more emotion and real 'voice acting' compared to the English dubs, a lot of the times the dubs will edit or 'Americanize' anime. Not all subs are good, but the great subbing groups give a lot of cultural information about Japan and make the anime all the more entertaining - dubs tend to grate on my nerves now.

It all depends really, for instance in Fist of the North Star, I always prefer to watch it in english for 2 reasons, 1 because I actully think the voice acting in it is awesome and secondly for the different ending.

Another apeal for dubs is that it doesnt matter if your not looking at the screen all the time to be able to read the text, so when you have lost your lighter and cant lok at the screen... you get the idea lol.

What I dislike about english dubs is how they change the terminology like in the dubbed version of Shakugan no Shana the Manipulator of Objects is known as the Master of Everything.

So with me its sort of a mixed bag, im not really bothered either way.

For me it depends on 2 things= The Plot of the anime and the Voice acting cast.
There are some well known English Voice actors that can improve the charaters image, also in my experience comedic anime tend to favor well with english dubs since comedy requires the least amount of emotion when acting out the charater....the English dub of Girls Bravo (An ecchi comedy) was Hilarious...waay funnier than the subbed version...the voices worked much better for me in English
in humorous situations.

Definitely English subs because it's best to listen to the characters in original Japanese audio. The English dub makes them sound so fake!

When I first started watching anime, I watched it with English dubs. I liked what I watched. I found it very entertaining. Then I started watching anime online. Most of what I found was subbed. I did not like this, but I watched anyway. I didnt' realize the difference made between dubbed and subbed until I caught an ep of Bleach on Adult Swim. I started to watch it and 5 mins later had to turn it off. I find that most dubbed eps tend to
1. Americanize the content
2. Tone down the content for younger audiences
3. Loose cultural meaning (if the show is taking place in Japan, it should feel Japanses, not American)
4. Most of the English voice actors try too hard.

When I first started watching subbed shows, it was hard. I had to constenlty keep my eye on the screen to read what was going on. Over the past couple of years, I've picked up enough Japanese thru watching anime that now, I no longer have to constantly read what is going on to understand it.

Subs rule.

Dubs are horrible... The English voices always sound weird... especially if you know before hand the Japanese voices. Although for me, Spanish voices sometimes are better, especially if I grew up listening to whatever anime in Spanish. lol

Subtitle is much better because most Dubbers are very crappy and does not fit the character properly... so in my opinion Subtitle is much better because mostly Anime characters has Very cute and nice voice dubbers from japan... and at Dub versions they remove or disregard the reference's of anime characters like ~desu , ~de amirasu, ~de gosaru, ~uguu... well that's what i notice here in the Philippines and in English Dub anime's at other Anime channels.

Sure I would much rather have subs but I think it depends on what you watched first. Take Dragon Ball Z for example, I watched dubs for that first before subs and I absolutely can't stand to hear Goku's voice in Japanese. It's probably what your used to hearing first for an anime and it sounds weird after listening to a different voice.

Subs wins over dubs! The Japanese voice actors wins in just about every aspects over English voice actors.

And personally want to get this message across to Atlus since my experience of gameplay with SMT: Persona 3/4 is extremely sour because of bad English voice acting despite it being one of the best game you can get on the PS2.

All the comments about learning a new language are pretty stupid, no offense intended. You can't learn japanese by watching anime, thats just ridiculous. It's like a japanese person learning english from our animation, how stupid do you think we would sound. I mean, I'm sure you can pick up words or phrases from watching some different anime. But like this one youtube frood said. do you really need to know, "im gonna kill you", "don't underestimate me" and "I will be the pirate king!". No, i don't think so.

Overall Subs are way better, because japanese voice acting is way better than ours.

The way I look at it is, Japanese acting in animation is way better than the western.
But western film acting is better than most japanese.

If you really want to learn japanese, i suggest getting a text book, or a program for your itouch I'm sure most of us on here have.

I'll name some useful programs.

First is Human Japanese, its like a well written text book, that teaches you step by step and has culture chapters too, not only to keep you interested, but you also learn about the culture behind the language you are studying.

Second is iKana, its a program that will help you learn about stroke orders and memorizing hiragana, and katakana.

But i think i wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy oversteped what i was trying to say.

overall
Subs = way better than dubs.

I can hardly accept dubbed caz its the originality of the anime isnt there. Its weird to listen to the dubbed version when we know that the anime is from japan. Subtitles are much better caz the originality taste is definitely there. Moreover, we can also learn some japanese when we're reading the subtitles! =D

I read somewhere in the thread the part where the Japones boys is masculine to hear, sorry to say, some boy voices are actually voiced by girl Japones ^^. 'SOME' okay, not all. xD

For me both =D
Sometimes I get lazy reading the subtitles thus the dubs are a help to me rather than reading each freaking sentence >_> which sometimes is annoying ** annoyed at the part where I want to watch the scene not the subtitles!!! ^_^;

And Japones sentences are not always the same 'coz it changes to whom/where/etc you address it to in different situations.

solidoxygen
05-16-2009, 11:16 AM
I don't mind English as long as they don't take away from the correct portrayal of the character. Sometimes I feel as if the dubbers don't make the bad guys evil sounding enough, or make someone sound bored or unrealistically dramatic.
I must admit that Fruits Basket was pretty well dubbed though.
~Anyone know any other series that are well dubbed? ~

Also, some dubs take out from the storyline itself. THAT is unforgivable (example: CardCaptors Sakura).

Jefurii

^agreed with solidoxygen...

Some shows were fine with dubs, like the original Full Metal Alchemist and Outlaw Star. The voice actors did a great job for me keep watching them in dub... but others like Bleach, Ai Yori Aoshi and etc... simply makes my ears bleed... >.>

id like to disagree. if that happened then it would be changing the story itself. though there are different subs, english subs will sometimes be different, as ive read a lot of translated novels it all depends on the translator, they may put it in different sentences but they all imply the same thing.

i watch dubbed as avich says if it is a sony.... hehe

but most cases.. i need dubbed anime so that i can keep up... because if you have friends watching over a dvd or cable... you might find pausing at long subtitles kinda annoying

it happens if you watch detective conan or detective q or anything that has some insanely long translations over a few japanese sentences...

dubbing would strongly apply there..

i like gundam wing though... i find the voices of the americans better there not unlike on japanese...

where its convenient subs are better than dubs, 100% of the time. i was discussing this with a few friends just the other day and they mostly agree. we came to the conclusion that you are missing out on culture, emotion, and subtle plot developments when anime is dub'd in English. no intention of belittling what dub'ers do but at times it feels, pardon the cliche, many aspects are lost in translation. i'm sure nothing can be translated perfectly even with subs. ideally all languages would be universally coherent. since they are not it feels like one is gaining a better perspective when anime is presented in the form it was intended to be in with an translation by some one who knows the culture and language well. it could be pure preference and knowledge of what ever cultures and languages that makes the difference. i consider my self a layman when it comes to Japanese culture and language and being a curious layman i prefer the clearest perspective. as far as i can tell sub titles are superior to dubbing in that sense.

Omikaru
06-18-2009, 01:30 AM
Mm.. I'm more impartial to both actually.

The Subs are nice, since it's a translation of originality *or not from what I've seen.* and true, it brings out the seiyuu's potential in voice acting.

As for English dubs.. from what I understand, it's a nice change of pace for several actors. I remembered talking to the guy *couldn't remember his name..* who does Roy Mustang's voice and the first thing that came out of my mouth was "How did it feel to do something different in an anime?"

I was literally shocked on his response. He said he liked doing it, and it's a lot harder to work with, so you can say it's more of a challenge to get the right attitude. *How we even met was actually awkward. We ran into each other, literally on accident.*

So it's not that the dubs are annoying, I'd think of this as a test for our actors to see how they'd do in a completely different world and very different atmosphere. *And I don't think their acting school covers that type of work either to be frank.*

It really depends on who they get to dub the anime, but I generally will only watch subs because they are the first ones I see, if I watch an anime more than once I'll make it a point to watch the dubbed version if I've already seen the subbed version and visa-versa. Lucky star is a good example of this both versions have excellent voice actors, but now that I think about it, I've never seen the japanese version of Cowboy Bebop, probably cuz I'm a huge Steve Blum fan.

For me it depends. Things like Gundam wing, Cowboy bebop and Full metal alchemist have good dubs.
Something like DGM, the dub kills, so it's subs all the way.
And then there's Negima where it's bad either way.
But mostly, I end up watching alot of subs.

Subs are the best. I like the original voices and it helps to learn the language, also I noticed that they tend to change little things when when they dub. Ex. Sailor Uranus and Neptune being cousins instead of lovers, and in Princess Mononoke, Ashitaka's sister Kaya isn't actually his sister, she's his fiance.

ZenNaari
11-11-2009, 01:27 PM
SUBS RULE! They actually help you learn the language (very useful since I'm gonna study in Japan). Stupid 4kids trying to rip off Japan by putting dubs on. I don't mind if it's East asian dubs (Philippines, Korea, China [not so much]), but american/english dubs SUCK! *cries* Come on guys! Let's tear down 4kids! CHARGE!

i usually dont like dubs, [the reason i replaced the OS .hack vids] but the DeathNote dub is ungodly. whoever made the english dub for that really knew what they were doing. The Fullmetal Alchemist dub is pretty good too. Mustang and Eds voice actors were perfect for it.lol. but yeah.i think romance animes should never be dubbed.there are a lot of things that sound better in japanese xD

Having subtitles is better, specially for modern anime's because of the motion and timing of the lips. It seems awkwards to fit other words for the movement of the lips.

RAW = ALOT of feelings
SUB = ALOT of feelings and you understand them
DUB = feelings but SOME are lost even though you understand them

not all cos dubbers are actually VERY experienced people. like in my country, they usually come from either the radio or TV broadcasts. so they have as much experience as the actual people who voiced it. maybe the original producer who knows what he wants the voice to sound like matters.

in the first place, if the anime ws better fitted for the american audiance then it would have been done with english voices then the feelings would be lost when dubbed into any other language.

I prefer subs most of the time, because some dub voice actors just fail.

However, there are a couple of exceptions to my rule.

Cowboy Bebop - I watched the dub, loved it, then watched a couple episodes in japanese with subs, and a lot of the coolness of it was lost in the sub.

Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight - Some of the voice acting is a little stiff in some places, but it's well worth it to watch the dub if only for the spell incantations ("Mana of all creation become the Fires of Destruction!"), and "the second part" (an animated 2 minute short at the end of every episode parodying what's happening in the anime) is much more humorous in english. ("Where's that Dark freakin' Elf with the freakin' sweet tooth?!")

Some shows that I've seen are actually good either way.

I saw Gun x Sword as both sub and dub, and in a personal sense of view, dubbed did better, especially the guy with Van's voice.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Same thing. I'm actually looking forward on who does the new character's voices in season 2 in dub form.

Ghost in the Shell and Bleach - hate to say it.. both of them were far better in dub than in sub, especially for Gits.

I'm in favor of English subs than English dubs for the following reasons:

1. You get to learn nihonggo as some words are repeated and becomes familiar to you...
2. Let me tell you this story: Once I was watching Tsubasa Chronicles in a certain anime channel. There was a scene where Syaoran was calling Sakura. To my surprise, instead of the usual pronunciation of Sakura as "Sa-koo-ra," the dubber of Syaoran pronounced it as "Sa-kyu-ra"! :emhh21:

That and I prefer the original names for things.. remember Nimbus from Dragon ball Z? (I actually prefer goku's engrish voice in this one the rest can stay nihonji)

English subs are better today because the dubs that are coming out now are brutally killing the animes but the were some English dubs that you can't help but listen to. For example DBZ. Me and many other people I talked to can admit that it's hard to listen to the original Japanese voices when we grew up listening to the English version. Other shows like that are Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Trinity Blood, and Fullmetal Alchemist... Not all dubbed animes are bad. But i have to admit, i grew up watching CCS in English and when i heard the Japanese vsn. I just about cried as to how much better it is.

though some anime have good dubs as we grow up watching them, like pokemon =), i would still have subs for animes. the tone and the talent of the japanese voice actors/actresses are clearly more defined in a subbed anime, while most dubs are very cliched sounding and very fake, as if the voice dubbers are not even putting their soul into their work. however, even though they may have been trying their best to imitate the character in their own rendition, it still cannot top the original.

asaness01234

i prefer english sub, but i do not hate english dub or tagalog dub (in my country)

above all, I would really prefer to learn japanese language so that I'll watch anime in RAW

I depends on the quality of the dubbing. for example, I can't watch black lagoon, cowboy bebop, Hellsing, and several other series subbed. on the other hand I love subbed as well. overall I prefer subbed, but I have nothing against dubbed as long as it's done decently.

jhai0603
05-06-2010, 10:34 PM
Well eventually, you come to understand what the characters mean, even if not literally, from experience, thereby not actually having to read the subs entirely.
Still, I hate dubs.
Many meanings are altered, and the intents are lost.
And it annoys me the way some characters sound sooo much not like their age.
For example, the Philippine Television fifth channel (so called TV5) dubbed Clannad, where Kyou sounded completely like a middle-aged lady.

I insisted on never watching television again ever since.

kurai
05-06-2010, 10:49 PM
Well I have posted here before but, my opinion has changed since then.

From all the anime I have encountered I have watched alot more subs then dubbed. There are quite a few animes that I refuse to watched subbed, like; Cromarite High school: the dubs in the anime, made it ridiculously funny. Golden boy; It was like a completely different anime from subbed to dubbed (I do like the subbed a bit more because it sounds more serious)

Baccano; the dubs in this anime are amazing in my opinion, they really gave the feel that it was in what time period it was in.

But all in all, most animes that I watch are better in subs for alot of reason. I think Japan takes voice acting alot more serious then America does, for anime anyway.

Omikaru
05-07-2010, 12:30 AM
It's not that Americans don't take it seriously, some actually take everything they got and put it out there. (Not to mention selected from the producers so..) In any case, I've heard some of the voice actors, some are very talented, and some have a lot of history if not credits. So kinda cut them a little slack, they're not that bad, they're just not used to that industry.

B0b
05-07-2010, 07:27 AM
If you haven't noticed, most animes use the same english voice actors. It's GLARINGLY obvious. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind pointless repitition. I would've been perfectly fine with it if they didn't suck. English dub = Mute.

After watching anime with subs for a long time, one can develop a really "liking and appreciative" taste to the original voice content of the anime.

Subs.
Why? Subs are more 'original' in the sense that one gets the closest experience to watching the show on TV in Japan, without the knowledge of the Japanese language.
Dubs, sometimes they don't follow the translation properly and stuff.
Nonetheless, the poor Eng and Japanese seiyuus are all just earning a living. So English or original, it's alright. However, if given a choice, it'll still be subs.
(actually I came to OS as other sites only had dubs)
Hooray to the fansub groups who give us the fansubs too.

Because if you dub an anime,
the anime touch loses it's effect.

In other words,
it's just plain old english cartoon.

Subs!! I don't have anything against Dubs but i do have something against the voice cover. In short, Dubs voice over is **** (word begin with S and ends with T...middle is H and I).

Subbed!!! I never even finished an episode if it's dubbed.. beside's "Afro Samurai" *well, i liked the gore! and i had no other choice.. =P*..
I always look for the subbed ones.. for me dubbed anime sounds lame.. it has less emotion or something.. -_-

I prefer Subs because the TRUE emotions of the Anime can be seen with Japanese voices and how they emote the reactions! Weeeeee~

LET'S GO JAPAN! >.<

Sub wins in 90% of situations, a few good dubs though is FMA, Death Note, and almost anything ever aired on Adult Swim.

some dubs are better than subs. one good example of this is School Rumble S1 and S2 I really liked the voice acting of every casts in there except the
wrestler girl (sorry can't remember her name, but she is the one who has a crush on Imadori).
but most eng dubs are horrible like the Dubs on Opne Piece...

before i used to like dubs like samurai X but when i tried the subtitled ones i liked it more because the voice is more appealing... and most anime's have cute voices...

what do you think??

well there are english dubs are great but there are some it sucks..especially the voice acting. i like the subtitles better because you would learn some of the nihongo words and the voice acting is superb ^_^

I really like eng subs compared to eng dub... I used to like dubs but after hearing naruto and one piece dubs, I said "yuck", it really sucked, and it gives me the creeps *my hair follicles stands*

Ok I take back what I post earlier. After watch Baccano! eng dub and comparing it to the sub, the dub (Baccano!) is way more better than the subs. Reason, English language suits the plot. Also I don't really trust some subs because some fansubs fail in grammar and sometimes they give subtitles that has different meaning from the original. That's why I check where I could find better subs for the anime I watch.

Now that I've gotten more and more into dubbed anime, I've found that many dubs are actually not as bad as most otaku make them seem. There are many voices that fit really well with the character. There are actually some dubs which sound SO much better than their Japanese counterparts (Baccano and Trigun, for example).

At the same time, subs aren't as great as most otaku make them. Yes, it's the native language, but even the Japanese over or underact. It's just the factor of coolness that comes from it being in the native language that blinds most people from sometimes sub-par acting.

Now, for me, it all depends on the series. I always watch unlicensed shows subbed, but I always check out the dub as well for licensed shows.

Glad it's not just me who noticed. I've been trying to explain that a few times, but seems it was unheeded or something. Some series are good either way, and for sure some series are better dubbed than the other way around.

Based from what you write, I also experienced that when I watched Air Gear, the Englsih dub is better. Well I think that it is still on how the anime is being dub.
