Subs are way better go watch NAruto in english u will get Crazy Believe it!, als seen a few eps of Higurashi and digimon in english sounds dull.
only series that doesnt have this is DragonBall Z i find that the english actor of Goku uses the rage vioce better when he is super saiyin.

i liked dubs when i was lil', once i tried subs i can't go back to dubs lol
I first watching Naruto in CN when I was a kid but after watch the subs it makes you think how bad the english version is... Compared to Naruto's voice in japanese the english version lacks emotion in tone..

I'm not a native english speaker so... I prefer SPANISH DUBS hahaha.
Well, actually for me it deppends on which one I watched first. If I see the dubbed first and then the subbed there's no problem and I can watch both, but if I first watch the subbed then we've got a problem because on spanish dub we get something that is translated like 3 or 4 times previous so a lot is missing or misstranslated and when I watch it I think it sucks awfully

English Dubs is definitely a NO! you will lost all the authentic of the anime.. So dont ever spoil a good anime with english dubs..

The reason Dubs are not as good is simple. Lets look at the process of anime hitting the air.,
First after the anime has been selected for production they go through a audition to select voice actors to play the parts (Much like a real movie). Where as the american counterparts that are dubing this are all on a payroll from the studio. They just dub it without trying to decide who's voice would be best for what part.
So the director of the raw anime will have picked the best voices for the vission of the animators where as dubs just use anyone off the street so to say.

I only go for dubs in 2 situations:
1. No subs
2. Subs suck too much
Sub is better than dub, seriously.

I prefer the english SUBS. Although there are a few decent dubs in English but that's rare and sometimes the voice actors fail to convey the character's personality.
Take for example K On! (dubbed by Bandai Entertainment). Can you imagine a reliable Yui? Or a not so scary Mio? Although to be fair I think they did a passable dub for their Adviser Ms. Sawako.

English subs because some of the voice actor are horrible in dubbing but it is much worse when they dub it in filipino. lol. I remember clannad. Tomoya's voice is like a 30yrs old man.

SUBS are better than DUBS
DUBS= boring voice, no charisma
SUBS=You learn more about the japanese language and they sound cooler
missRobin7
10-31-2010, 06:16 AM
yeah, i totally agree, japanese voices are more appealing and cute.
they have unique stress and feelings towards their intonation...:)
so that's why i prefer original japanese anime with subtitle than
english or tagalog dubs :))
though some subs are not grammatically correct and differs in some approach., i still prefer it over dubs :}
and with subs, i can familiarize some japanese words and pronunciations...LOL

English subs, Of course because, What if Hanazawa kana is the voice actress in that moe character? and it already dubbed by english >< i think it will ruin the character of that anime :) because Hanazawa Kana's voice is so cute and moe! haha :)
FiQ5149
04-05-2011, 10:15 AM
it depends on the voice actors who does the dubbing.
some can really give more life to the character than the japanese seiyuu..and some are not.
it is a contradiction among us.
well some can like and hate...
maybe i'm just on neutral side.
haha..i have seen many anime in japanese and english dub.
i guess i can give a 50-50 on this.
if some of you know the tv channel.."ANIMAX",
you will know what i meant.
but a fan-made dub is a big NO for me.

English dubs are soooooo bad. I only watch japanese. The only decent dubs I've seen are DBZ, Death Note, Kaze no Stigma, and Clannad. I'm sure there are a few other decent dubs but generally they're really lame and take away the feeling of the show imo.

Original japanese audio is way better than dubs since most dubs are rushed and the voices don't go well with the character's personality or appearance. Not all dubs are bad, but most are ;)

I'm with the majority on this one and say that primarily I prefer English subtitles. Without the original Japanese voice actors I think you can loose a lot the subtlety of some aspects of a scene. The little nuances of the Japanese language really help out comedic shows and also if done right give more of a vulnerable tone in the more serious ones.
Plus there are just some bad dubs out there. A perfect example is the dub for Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. A friend of mine watched the original series and loved it but was turned off by the truer Brotherhood version. I couldn't understand why they thought Brotherhood was too childish. Well sure enough FMA:B came on TV with English dubbing. I nearly fell out of my chair! Terrible! The whole tone of the show was completely different between the original Japanese and English dubs. In fact some of the most dramatic scenes are completely ruined in my opinion.
Overall, subtitled Japanese is the truest version you are going to get unless you learn Japanese. Dubs if done right are tolerable if you don't feel like reading. My advice is if you've only seen a dubbed version to definitely watch it subbed. You might be surprised.

I guess however you watch it first matter allot in how you like it. For example I could never watch yu-gi-oh in subbed, it sounds so wrong for me I can't stand it. Same goes for dragonball and dragonball z. But for dragonball gt since I saw it in subbed first I can't watch it in dubbed now 'cause I don't like it so like I said it atter alot on how you first saw it, but for the most part I think subbed is a million times better.

I prefer subs. The cultural distance it creates has saved my life on more than one occasion where i dared to watch some truly putrid titles that normally would have driven me suicidally insane, and additionally it creates some unintentional humor.
Case in point: Digimon Tamers. The English dub had a lot of stupid jokes that were meant to try and make it appeal more to the American audience, but the sub had Culumon. That might sound odd, but Culumon was weirdly hilarious in the Japanese sub because it said "Culu" at almost every single frame it was on screen. I've heard that term used as slang for the vagina, so it sounds like Culumon is a child with Tourette Syndrome. Unintentional, but i've always been more sardonic in my humor and am always capable of finding humor in other peoples !@#$-ups.

I say English sub not simply because it's good mental excercise having to dart between the text and main picture and a good way to train peripheral vision and focus, but because i've spent a lot of time on bad localizations. Well that and with how use i am to CardGamesFTW and TeamFourStar, i honestly get confused if i try to turn on a dub.

I would have to say that it depends. Did I hear it first with an English dub or the original voices? Usually if I heard the series first with an English dub then that's probably what I'm going to prefer because it's what sounds "right" to my ears. It's not a matter of whether or not the translation is correct or if the voice actors do a good job capturing their character. The nostalgia factor is powerful enough to override such trivial things XD
For example, I can only watch Gundam Wing and Escaflowne if the English dub is available (which is why I own them both on DVD). I've tried to watch them both listening to the original voices and reading the English subtitles but it's just too weird. I highly doubt that I would have liked either of those shows had I watched them without an English dub track. The Japanese voice actros are not well matched with the characters in either of those shows at all which is unusual because that's usually the problem most people have with English voice actors.
That being said, except for those few exceptions, if I'm given a choice I would definitely choose to watch my anime with the original voices accompanied by English subtitles. Even though I passionately dislike particular seiyuu and long to utilize the mute button whenever a character they're voicing appears on-screen, I still prefer to partake of my anime in the way it was intended.

I am in between for subs/dubs. My reason is because I just find certain animes work better with english dubs, ex. fullmetal alchemist, black lagoon, 2x2=shinobuden, dragon ball series, shuffle.
While the english dubs would not be the best for some good animes, ex. clannad, dragon half, lucky star, shakugan no shana, zero no tuskaima, etc.
It just depends on the anime I watch, if I like the dubs I'll watch it, if not I will watch the subs.

Japanese voice actors/actresses deliver the real "juice" of the characters because of their ability to deliver "real" emotions with just their voice... I hated watching animes that are dubbed because it seems like they're just reading the scripts, rather than "acting" on the character's role...
So yeah, English subs for me.

I like Japanese dub waay better. English Voice acting just doesn't sound natural nor does it fit the character image very well. However, there are a few exceptions to this. I've watched some anime titles and found English voice acting sounded way for fitting, but finding one is like finding a needle in a haystack - a rather large haystack. ~_~

This is obvious... most would really picked English subs... Jap voices are so much cooler and fun to hear. Sometimes there are expressions that can't be translated with english and when it get's translated it just doesn't seem right... the jap humor was sometimes even replaced when translated to english...
But not all english dub are bad... Actually the english dub version of spirited away is better than the original one...

I agree with OP! I used to like dub when i first started watching anime like naruto and bleach, but then i came across a terrible-sounding dubbed anime and discovered subbed anime!
so i've stuck with sub ever since :) having the original voices makes the anime more authentic for me.
Plus, dubbed sounds really weird and off now that i'm used to the original voices (don't get me wrong, some dubbed anime are really good, but most of them are not)
subbed > dubbed

the english dub in my opinion is not worth a bit.
it feels way more traditional (lol) and better if japanese language and english sub...
since im used to the way they talk as japanese and when they try to copy that speaking english it just sounds weird...
and their voices sounds kinda weird also...

I'm just like many who grew up watching dubbed anime (Dragon Ball Z, Trigun, Inuyasha, ect) when Adult Swim/Toonami used to have awesome programming blocks and the dubbing wasn't bad they were good, very good if I might add.
However years later I finally found that subtitles were better, not only were the voices filled with more emotion and feeling it just felt right seeing right words and tell the plot better without the English dubbing ruin what was supposed to be really said

It all depends on the anime. I usually watch subs, but if ive never seen the anime ill give the dub a try. Subs are usually better, but there are some anime that i prefer dubbed. For example, Speed Grapher sounds better in English, especially main character Saiga. I also like how Osaka sounds in the English version of Azumanga Diaoh. Plus, the over 9000 scene in DBZ is a classic in English. But other anime, like Seargent frog, i prefer subbed. i just cant get used to the voices. Samurai Champloo is cool in ENglish and Japanese

english dub is good coz you don't need to focus that much on a certain scene specially when it's boring you can understand it just by hearing it even thou you're not looking.but then i still prefer english sub...it's more natural for me... but the subs should be good..there are subs that is so irritating.like what the hell are you saying?....anyway ENGLISH SUB for me...i can learn their language.when to use and how to say it.. :)

With the exception of Afro Samurai because of Samuel L. Jackson as Afro, I'd prefer english subs rather than english dubs. I my opinion, voice acting is a major part of building and showing a character's personality. I guess I feel much more out of a character if the voice I'm hearing is the original one.

Well this is a very big question and is a frequently asked one personally i prefer subs because every time i watch a dub the voice acting just doesn't grab me the way that the voice acting for subs do although there are some anime's that i think are good in English for example Baccano was great in English but it depends on the person i like subs more than dubs both are good in there own aspect but for me the Japanese voice acting in anime will always beat the English voice acting

Subs for me. I like being able to watch something in its original language and get all the culture. I used to only watch dubs when I was younger but then I discovered subs and now....I can't even watch dubs I used to enjoy anymore. :/
I am not saying anything about the voiceacting, some of it is quite good, but there are certain people who in English seem to show no emotion or can't get it right. I also think that lately the companies have just been using the popular people instead of using people whose voices actually fit. That's just my opinion.

When I first started with anime, all I had were dubs. So I definitely enjoyed them at the time! But a few years later, I discovered the glory that is subbing. I enjoyed subs more as soon as I discovered it; anime is more epic when it has the actual storyline instead of some the mess/censorship that comes with dubbing..
Dubs that I grew up with are fine because they're nostalgic. But anything else just sounds terrible to me! Take Fruits Basket for example. I noticed it on Netflix, got really excited and put it on. Two sentences in I had to shut it off. I felt like I got trolled.

Watching English Dubs and English Subs have their own pros and cons. Watching english dubs is much more convenient since you don't have to read anymore and you can focus on watching every scene of the anime you're watching but we know that most dubs are not the exact translation of the Japanese version. They used to change some of the dialogues which causes alteration on the thought of a particular scene. I remember the last scene of a Card Captor Sakura movie that I watched wherein the thought between the two versions are very much different.
English subbed (Japanese audio) version:
Sakura to Tomoyo (while looking at Yukito):
I also want to say how I really feel...
I want the one I love to know.
She wanted to say something to Mr. Clow.
Something she was desperate to tell him.
I hope I can tell him someday..
English Dubbed Version:
Sakura to Tomoyo (while looking at Yukito):
I think we'll be back again soon.
I got a feeling we haven't seen the last of this place.
That sorceress may have seen devil but she just wanted her spirit to set free.
I'm glad my friends are okay too.
See the big difference? It's like the English dubbed version altered the plot in a way that caused the ending to be different. But if you look closely on the emotions shown by Sakura, you would know that the appropriate dialogue for her is obviously the English subbed one.
Because of that, I now prefer to watch the English subbed so as not to confuse myself with the plot and because I think the voices of seiyuus (Japanese voice artists) are much more expressive, cool and funny. Moreover, the english subs makes it easier for me to learn the Japanese language.

English sub is better. If is English dubbed the characteristic of the voice doesn't match/doesn't fit with the anime character. We can still understand when its just English dubbed while watching the anime. Aye!

for me it's definately subs.. cuz it sounds so much better in the original language, plus we get to learn a couple of words in japanese
and i think in the japanese language feelings and emotions are expressed more with the tone of the voice than in english ^_^

The only Dubbed series I like, would have to be DBZ because Vegeta's voice, it's just beyond perfection, but companies like 4K!Ds and FUNimation are just eraser-happy, getting rid of every drop of blood, the results are DragonBall Z KAI and Yu Gi Oh and removing precious episodes! Although, Subbed episodes are mostly uncensored making it more desireable and learning japanese is awesome.
PS. I forgive FUNimation for their censoring because they Sponsor such great series (Fairy Tail, DB GT, FMA).

For me it depends...
Why?
If I chose English dub... It suppose to be clear, cute voice (if its a girl) and most of all the voice who's dubbing the character must fit.
If I chose English sub... I can learn Japanese language better, you can understand it better(If your good at English) and most of all its original voice o.o

Ofcourse the sub because dub make the sound not fit at the character so the original sound + English SUB = Fantastic anime:bingo:

I'm more of a sub over dub kind of girl myself, maybe that's because most dubs i've seen are major fails, like when the voices just don't seem to match. however there are exceptions to that when the dub is actually decent and i decide to watch that, mainly Funimation i think makes halfway decent dubs. Examle: i loved the Ouran dub, and also i am sad to say (since i love VK) that i couldn't stand the Vampire Knight dub, nothing wrong with the voice actors i just think they were casted all wrong. But it is all a matter of opinion of course ^_^

04-29-2012, 09:59 AM
Weird I felt that I had answer this before.....
Anyway I'll go for English subs. I don't like English dub except for Ouran. It's always the best to hear the original voices since their are some English dub works that they had interpreted characters wrongly and give wrong impressions to the suppose impressions to the audiences.

I used to be so annoyed by having to read english subs and not be able to watch them in my own language but now it's the other way around. I can't barely stand to watch them english dubbed..it just...feels wrong, the emotions aren't there, and it seems less exciting, and realistic for some reason...whenever I hear english dubs It always seems like they are just reading off a script. I find it really annoying lol. So I like subs best.
