Beginning

She sits there motionless. Voices swirl around her... but she does not hear them. Her short hair gently sways while the soft voices continue. A hand comes out and gently touches her shoulder... and slowly her gaze goes from the ground... to the owner of the hand.
"Are you sure that you're okay?" asks her older sister Nina. The girl only gives a curt, slow nod as her answer. It was a nod that didn't reassure the others of her "being okay". Her older brother and younger sister who were behind her, looked at her in concern... while the parents just continued to sit in the front... quiet. The small grey van continues quietly on the thin, winding road.

Why?

The news had surprised the whole family. It was something no one expected. Yesterday, after hearing it, they had all decided that they would visit tomorrow. Directly after receiving the news though... her older brother and sister wouldn't leave her alone. Last night she didn't know what to do... what to think. In her room she sat there and decided to collect herself... to prepare herself for the meeting tomorrow... to set her own mind and feelings straight. She was doing this now, in the car.

...It was always a special bond. He was always different from anyone else she knew... calm and collected... yet he didn't seem that way. The bonds that held these two together were very intricate, and far from ordinary. They were a year apart in age and yet because she started school a year earlier than normal... they both ended up in the same grade. Thinking more... she couldn't even remember the time when she first met him and his family. It just seemed like they were friends forever... friends from the very beginning.

Rena

She walked into her new classroom and randomly picked a chair against the wall. It was the first day of middle school and other sixth graders started to walk into the room feebly. The idea of a "schedule" was new to them, and finding classes for the first time was a scary thing. The weird smell of old textbooks and a cleaning agent of some sort were not helping at all.

Okay!! I got here... easy!

She calms herself down. Now she can look around and get acquainted with the faces of the people in her third period class. She pans the classroom... noticing a couple people she knew from elementary school. There were new faces too. Then she noticed him.

He sits there unaware of all the other students walking in... he is looking out the window while his head is propped by his hand. He isn't bored.... He... is just looking outside, apparently deep in thought.

W-wait?!.... w-what?? Nervous and surprised she recollects her thoughts...
W-well... th-they moved here last year... it's to be expected that we at least have a class together now...

Last year, she was very surprised to find out that old acquaintances had moved near bye. Apparently this other family had moved away before her family decided to move here.... It was just a great coincidence that both families had ended up in the same area. When she met their oldest son last year... a great feeling of happiness and something else swept over her... she wasn't sure why though... but she knew that she didn't like the other feeling very much....

well it's not like I have a problem with him... no problem at all... well.. umm...at least now...

Before that thought could be finished a girl comes around and sits next to her. The girl sits right where she blocks the sight of him. Realizing the stare of the girl who was here before her, the new girl turns...

In a friendly gesture, the girl introduces herself. "Hello I'm Sheena" Sheena smiles.
Caught a bit off guard by the sudden introduction...
"oh! Hi!" she smiles too "My name is Rena"

Already at this point... other students had started small talk. But after she spoke... the boy from across the room slowly turned. A little bit visible from around the girl, Rena's eyes followed him as he looked across the class.

Did my name make him look around?

Then their eyes met. Thump. And naturally he just smiles and waves.

She hurriedly gives her response by waving too.

I... I-I think I'll just avoid things like this from now on Rena thought to herself... soon more students started to pour into the classroom and eventually the teacher walks in. Rena did not know that this year would be a very long year for her. She found that the year went by faster if she just ignored that that guy was in the classroom... but it was hard to ignore a guy who was easily one of the smartest people in the class. When he answered questions it was only in times when nobody else knew the answer. Eventually his presence would become a comfort to others... and to Rena...
