Oh my gosh. The first one that came to mind is Kino Makoto from Sailor Moon. Strong and independent... generally a bamf. Beneath her tough exterior, she's actually right gentle. And a romantic. Basically I thought that was practically the best thing ever.

My tastes have since shifted a bit. (If I had to choose someone from the Sailor Universe, it would totally be Kaiou Michiru)
