Why is martial arts/swordplay anime so awesome?

perhaps the best genre of anime? there are not enough amine pertaining to this genre nor can never be, the style is just that sweet.

that's probably not enough for a thread lets discus the best martial arts/sword play animes out there. as i have barely skimmed the surface of this wonderful style of anime and i and would be ecstatic with some more recommendations and or discussions on the matter.

I dunno about others, but I grew up on stories of knights with shiny swords, destroying the monsters and dragons and rescuing damsels in distress and if you had to fight, sword fighting was the best as it was honourable and quick. Better than blowing up people or being reduced to punching others noses out. (it was only when I got older I began to really feel sorry for the dragons and side with them)

So I guess, thats why I also enjoy anime with sword play

As for martial arts, who was not amazed at the stories we heard about the miraculous things martial artists could do and watch with baited breath all those Jackie Chan and Kungfu movies? :4:

(Ok ... maybe I am alone on that one, but really loved the whole myth and secrecy behind those movies)

i would agree with you not just because i enjoy everything about the genre. i think you are right and explained it pretty well. i think part of the reason its so enjoyable is because martial arts and sword play can easily be related to reality on a number of different levels. the struggle it takes to over come an opponent is tangible and the morals, values, and ethics involved in the journey are easily relatable. even if it is super cinematic and dramatized it usually stays true that core. i suspect i has something to do with bushido and the history of martial and sword play. however i can only speculate.

An anime character with a sword is always cool, even if its in chibi version....lol

sword play/martial arts is historic in Japanese history and its a cool one at that.

Every body loves a sword and martial arts anime series....Take Samura X in account.

I have interest for martial arts and swords from young, found it pretty cool how they fight and the counters. probably it's because all of us likes action fights?

anyway in animation world everything is possible so they can add special effects on the sword ( SFX !! SFX !! )
oh yeah they need to research first how martial artist moves so that they can draw it

You cannot see these swordplays and martial arts in real life. You can see some but the anime version is better and cooler than the real ones. Can you see someone that can slash with three swords? only zorro(one piece) can do this one.

I suppose that it's because swordplay looks cooler than fighting with fists. And it's much easier to make visual effects with swords than using fists

For me the reason I like swordplay based anime because I grew up listening to stories about knights and castles. King Arthur, Robin Hood, and Peter Pan type stuff.

I also think that the sword is one of the weapons that takes the most skill to use. Guns are easy and deadly at a distance. The same goes for a bow and arrow really. I mean both takes skill and accuracy. But the sword is so close ranged. It really takes a lot of skill. If you are in a sword fight the chances of both people getting injured or killed is very high assuming that both members are skilled with a sword. Having a hand held weapon like a sword, dagger or axe become a lethal representation of the wielders skill, discipline and determination to survive is just very awesome. Its a natural primitive instinct for a person to defend themselves with whatever they can. And besides their own fists I feel the sword is the second best way to do it.

Anything ranged can be very one sided if the target in unaware. And I do believe those weapons are needed more than a sword in certain situations.

Its Soo hard To make there sword style in real!
you cant cut a tree you cant slash the man i one slash!
you can beat the gun using a sword!
you cant use a light speed using a sword!
you cant make a illusion using a sowrd!!
thats why sword is realy awesome anime!!!!

The moves are just so cool and it will sometimes make you wonder if it can really be done in real life? XD

They are cool because, they tend to be impossible in real life. Example: roronoa zoro, I dont think you can actually use a sword on in your mouth.
